This really makes me angry. A lot of people are working pretty hard to get Democrats elected both in New Hampshire and nationally, but ill thought, absurd, inappropriate and, frankly, idiotic comments that you and Mr. Halloran apparently - and wrongly - think are amusing, or thought provoking, make all that work for nothing. In addition to apologizing, not to just to Sarah Palin, but also to all the Democrats you have hurt, you may want to consider unplugging your computer. Or, better yet, getting rid of it. "When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." Franklin D. Roosevelt
Rep. Horrigan's comment was neither stupid, nor sophomoric, nor inappropriate, nor hateful. Nor did it in any way whatsoever wish ill upon Sarah Palin, her family, or anyone else. Anyone, e.g. Ryan Williams, who suggests otherwise is a liar. Rather, it thoughtfully and accurately pointed out that Palin is a gaffe-prone fake whose power lies solely in the mythical image she has created about herself. Any rational person would recognize it as an express wish that she remain alive. As he has plainly said himself.
And being "the subject of an NHGOP press release" is hardly an indicator of wrongdoing, Kathy, or you'd be a multiple felon. The NH GOP kneejerk reaction of condemning as shameful and resignation-worthy anything that sounds like it could be interpreted as being similar to something objectionable -- while maintaining the longest possible silence when their own house idiots defame New Hampshire and Nashua teachers -- is despicable, and you of all people should know better than to aid and abet it.
I don't believe that I have ever had a one-on-one conversation with Rep. Horrigan, but I have seen him often in the LOB, and he has always been sincere, serious, respectful, thoughtful and dedicated to progressive ideals and the New Hampshire democratic process. He is the type of person we need more of in the Legislature, not fewer of.
Rep. Horrigan was wrong to believe that he needed to apologize and resign. I hope that he reconsiders his decision to end his campaign for reelection.
"dead Palin wd be even more dangerous than a live one...she is all about her myth & if she was dead she cldn't commit any more gaffes."
Thoughtful? I don't think so.
You also ignore the context: a former long serving United States Senator and several others, including a 16 year old girl, were killed in a plane crash. Halloran joked about that by bringing in Palin and Levi Johnston. Then, in another example of Halloran's lack of judgement, he was up on Facebook breathlessly talking about how FAMOUS he had become. That was the thread in which Rep. Horrigan made his comment.
There are other candidates, including some elected officials, who have said some dumb things in this election cycle, like Bob Guida's performance in Nashua, and the racist running in Grafton County on the Republican side. They have not acknowledged their wrongheadedness. Rep. Horrigan admitted his mistake, and his resignation says a lot about his character. "When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." Franklin D. Roosevelt
Horrigan's decision to state on that thread that, unlike Halloran, he didn't wish for Palin's death?
My use of the word "thoughtfully"? Fine, for argument's sake, leave that word out. What exactly do you take issue with?
Here's what Halloran did wrong: he said, even if in jest, that it was too bad that a politician he disliked was not in a fatal plane crash -- in other words, he wished someone dead.
Can you explain as plainly and in as few words what Rep. Horrigan's transgression was?
He did run in 2008 and as I recall was not endorsed by the Jaffrey committee; he went on to lose in the general, coming in dead last of six (Bonnie Mitchell, the other D, came in 2nd).
Good news is that there will be a full slate of Democrats this year, even though I won't be pulling for Halloran (or voting for him). All three Republican incumbents are running, however, so it's likely an uphill fight to say the least.
It would be nice if someone would step forward (and, no, I'm not a good candidate—just don't have a lot of local ties. Most of my work is outside the district, and I'm quite reserved.)
