Rep. Carol McGuire "Young People Are 'Not Worth The Minimum'"

Carol and her husband Dan, moved here from Arizona, to help the FSP dismantle our state gummint. Of course, they're also the folks who want taxpayers to fund the diversion of the Suncook River, because when the river moved they no longer had riverfront property.

We can never thank Craig Benson (the GOP govvernor  the NH GOP never speaks of)  enough for encouraging the FSP to move to NH.

Carol & Dan McGuire were recently profiled in a magazine article about family members who serve together.  They cheerfully told the interviewer that they moved here specifically because it was easy to get into politics in NH.

The article was in the National Council of State Legislatures' monthly magazine and it was about family members who serve together in their state legislatures.  The McGuires are arguably the second most  powerful legislative family pair in the country, after Wisconsin's Fitzgerald brothers.  (Jeff is the Speaker of the House, Scott is the Majority Leader of the Senate.)

Our legislature actually works more and/or has more power than some legislatures which are paid real salaries and have much larger districts.  

Carol McGuire in particular has been an effective legislator during her two terms, and she is now a committee chair.  Her committee (Executive Department & Administration) is not the most glamorous assignment, but it is important, especially at a time when state government is being restructured.  And Dan, in his first term, got himself on the most powerful committee, Finance.  I am not saying they're Bill & Hillary Clinton or anything like that, but they have amassed some power.

I will be dumped on anyway for using a positive adjective to describe someone who SusanThe despises, but I will still point out that "effective" is not always the same thing as "good."  It all depends on whether the effect is good or bad.

The terms powerful and effective do not mean the same thing. That said neither term does not even begin to describe that couple...contemptible comes to mind.  

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

or at least he did when they ran for office. Not that it isn't OK for the guy to take his wife's name, but it's creepy to do it if you are running for office after establishing yourself professionally under another name. What do they have to hide is what I wonder?

Maybe it's part of the free stater mystique. Manchester elected one a few years back from the West side that changed his name when he moved here from FLA. Very strange.

There's a lot of jealousy of the young. If they don't do what they're (4.00 / 2)

told, they're worthless. Having them coddled by school systems and given "special education" that many of these oldsters obviously never got doesn't help.
And then there's the fact that many people don't like other people's children and can barely tolerate their own. They're a disappointment.
None of these sentiments, I would wager, are based on the actual behavior of young people.

the most astute labor economist in the world. After all, through her undoubtedly painstakingly detailed analysis, she has determined that not one young person currently or previously employed for minimum wage was worth it.

Apparently when I stood in the same place for 8-10 hours a day on a concrete floor being degraded by customers like Carol because I was a cashier, I was not earning my pitiful wage.

My question to Carol: were young people "worth the minimum" when the minimum was $5.15 an hour? Or should we have been paying them $2 an hour?

it's forever 1952, and at Smith's Family Pharmacy on Main St, Archie is wearing a pink striped shirt and a paper hat as he works at the soda fountain.

Bobby Sue and Curly are just sinking two straws into a root beer float that they're going to share. Bobby Sue is babysitting for pin money, and Curly is working as a lifeguard this summer. He's working up his courage to ask Bobby Sue to go steady.

Well I am glad Rep McGuire is not in my district, but with that said we need to get people like McGuire and her husband out of office.  

Lets show the McGuire's it is just as easy to get you out of office and maybe they will go back to Arizona.

Susanthe, you have hit the nail on the head. It will NEVER be 1952 again, the world is too alien for many of the tea party/free state complainers. A local power broker?/Republican activist here in North Haverhill sent out an essay forwarded to him from Thanksgiving 2026, lamenting the Federal Gov's mandate on tofu turkey, family not gathering because the electric cars can only make it 40 miles, grandchildren who do not communicate do to texting requirements.... on and on it went.
