Coffee with our Congresswoman

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

Earlier today a group of NH's Organizing for America (OFA) volunteers, as well as representatives from the NH Young Democrats, Granite State Progress and America Works, met in a Manchester cafe over a cup of coffee to thank our First District Congresswoman, Carol Shea-Porter, for her strong support of President Obama's agenda.

Congresswoman Shea-Porter was upbeat and personable, filling us in on the immediate steps President Obama and Congress have taken to fix our economy and bring jobs to New Hampshire. She then took questions ranging from poverty to the environment and from student loan forgiveness to healthcare policy. Whatever Boss Limbaugh might want us to think, Democrats are making real progress for the American people ... and she made it clear she is working to bring the same CHANGE to Washington that propelled her into Congress and Barack Obama into the White House.

Finally, Blue Hampshire's own, the incomparable Kris Schulz, presented Congresswoman Shea-Porter with a certificate thanking her for supporting:
   *  Making healthcare affordable for all Americans;
   * Investing in clean energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil;
   * Improving education so our children can compete in the global economy; and
   * Cutting the budget deficit in half.

Congresswoman Shea-Porter is a champion for the rest of us, especially our families, veterans and young people. While the coffee was decent, the conversation was magnificent. Kudos to Kris, OFA and, of course, to Congresswoman Shea-Porter.

Maintaining the groundswell (4.00 / 1)
All throughout the primary and election cycle, I would frequently discuss the "after we win" with fellow hopemongers. We knew that winning was only a chance at real change and most of us were commited to rolling up our sleeves for as long as we could sustain a positive effect.

Organizing For America(OFA) is the manifestation of this spirit. We are the the change we seek and I can think of no better examples of this sense of commitment than Congresswoman Shea-Porter and Kris Schultz.

Special shoutout to Kris, who was key to the success of the Draft Obama movement and was quick to take up the charge of OFA.

Thanks for a cheerful report on this gloomy Tuesday. (0.00 / 0)
It seems that the most vociferous opponent of President Obama change in direction on human rights and reconciliation with Cuba is one Marc A. Thiessen.  If you read the UL religiously, you've no doubt seen his op-eds.
Thiessen is usually identified as a senior adviser in the Bush White House.  He was appointed chief speech-writer in December of 2007.  Before that, from 2001-2004, he was the major speech writer for Donald Rumsfeld and before that he'd been a long-time advisor to Jesse Helms, while he chaired the Foreign Relations Committee.
Some of that background accounts for his opposition to reconciling with Cuba.  His support for torture seems to have other roots--in his Catholic faith and admiration for Pope John Paul, of whom he wrote, as the Pope lay dying:

We need his example in this world filled with suffering. We need the lesson he is teaching us: that suffering is not useless; that it can have meaning, and salvific power. As John Paul wrote in his 1984 encyclical On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, once this meaning and power are discovered, suffering actually becomes "a source of joy" because "faith in sharing the suffering of Christ brings with it the interior certainty that the suffering person...is serving, like Christ, the salvation of his brothers and sisters. Therefore he is carrying out an irreplaceable service."

Which, I guess, tells us that the repeated sensation of drowning that was visited on the detainees wasn't entirely sadistic, but was designed to help them share "in the suffering of Christ."

What crimes would we charge to the people who burned the witches at Salem?

I'm sorry, this is probably not the right thread.
