NH-01: Guinta is In

by: Laura Clawson

Fri May 01, 2009 at 15:31:38 PM EDT

CQ Politics:

Republican Frank Guinta, mayor of Manchester, filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run in New Hampshire's 1st District.

Guinta recently announced he would not seek re-election as mayor and was mulling a run for federal office in 2010. But Guinta has not publicly announced whether he will run for the open Senate seat or for the 1st Congressional District seat.

Of course, as Kathy Sullivan let us know earlier today, Guinta is not quite as strong a candidate as the NRCC would like us to believe. Hopefully once Carol Shea-Porter beats him, national Republicans will look elsewhere and New Hampshire will get a cycle or two of break from this intensive electoral chest-pounding.

The wind up (0.00 / 0)
"Frank Guinta's proven record of protecting taxpayer dollars provides a clear contrast to the reckless Washington spending that has been rubber-stamped by Carol Shea-Porter at the expense of New Hampshire families. While this has been a traditionally challenging state for Republicans in recent elections, an established community leader like Guinta has the ability to bridge party lines and once again give New Hampshire the representation it deserves."

'Cause it ain't no pitch!

"Ill writers are usually the sharpest censors." - John Dryden

Yay! (0.00 / 0)
Carol's crushed the career of one-time Republican wunderkid Jeb Bradley; now she gets to grind Guinta into the ground as well! Once Guinta's had his incompetence aired throughout NH-01 and been soundly defeated, that leaves the NH Republican Party with... who, exactly, for a bench? Everyone they have is damaged goods and known losers.

Now that Guinta's inability to run a city without, say, letting the road condition go to crap, wrecking the city's finances, and ruining a number of services is going to get some publicity, that should take him off the board, too.

Only the left protects anyone's rights.

I didn't like the first line of the article

Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter's 2010 re-election bid just got complicated.

How is it complicated, she was going to have an opponent, and if she can beat bush league bradley two times in a row she can handle frank "rudy" guinta with one arm tied behind her back.

Yah, that's why I didn't (0.00 / 0)
quote that part. Didn't feel like giving it that much credit.

Well, actually, elections are a voter action. New Hampshire voters (0.00 / 0)
are sensible and fair.  If someone has done a good job, they get rehired.

I do hope they don't come forward with McConnell's argument that Republicans are necessary in Congress to "check" the majority.  Checks and balances are integral to the three branches of government.  They don't depend on party identification.

The idea that the only function for Republicans is to provide some opposition or "balance" is pretty lame.

Honestly now... (4.00 / 3)
I love my job.

Frank for congress?...rotfl!

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

Ray (0.00 / 0)
I think we are all waiting for the next NHDP yardsign for Frank. Like the Sununu and Bradley ones.

[ Parent ]
Zero (4.00 / 4)
Still have the "Guinta, 0 Promises Kept" signs from 2007.  Guess what, they still apply!

[ Parent ]
They worked real well for you! Lol (0.00 / 0)
You crack me up Chris.

[ Parent ]
Hey Mike... (0.00 / 0)
How do you like working for Dick Armey?
...charming man I hear...

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

Good Luck, Mike! (4.00 / 1)
I hope you support the Mayor by sharing with him the brilliant strategic insights that elevated Jim Coburn to the governorship, Mike Hammond to Congress, and Pat Buchanan and George Pataki to the White House.

Some might believe that any past co-chair of the "Benson Brigade" has little credibility when it comes to recommending effective leaders.  But, hell, come back to BH any time, Mike!  Good to have you here.

Enjoy the weekend. . . .

Don't forget (0.00 / 0)
Mike also worked for Tommy Thompson and Rudey Giuliani during the '08 primary.

Electing NH Dems since 2004.

Thanks... (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for the bio plug. I think you need a new hobby though...lol.

If you want, I can start listing all the races Chris Pappas, Ray Buckley and Kathy Sullivan have been involved in. We can talk about the Wayne King, Mark Fernald and Granny D years or maybe even Bob Baines 2005.

Hey, I love old war stories.

If you prefer though, we can even talk about current events, like perhaps the two special elections this year.

"Benson Brigade"...who thought of that name anyway?...lol.

Dartmouth (BTW..I assume your Mother didn't name you that) I will let you in on a little secret. You can't get too high when you win or get too low when you lose. What is great about this business, especially here in NH, is that no matter what happens you get to do it all again tomorrow.

Have a Great weekend!

Much Agreed, Mike (4.00 / 1)
I took a lot of crap for your kinsfolk back when we were losing.  It's fun to give a little back -- all in good fun.

A few response points:

1. Ray, Kathy, and Chris are riding a hell of a winning streak right now.  They deserve it.  They should enjoy it.

2. My mother did name me "Dartmouth Dem".  She had tremendous foresight!

3. "Benson Brigade" sounds like an Alicia Preston creation.  Guess you would know better than I would, though.

All my best,
DD

Ok that was funny... (0.00 / 0)
Your #2 and #3 points had me in stitches.

Enjoy your Sunday,

Mike

I'd be sure to make each rare installation worth it.

[ Parent ]
I guess that means (0.00 / 0)
we'll have John E. to kick around again for NH-Sen...

Otherwise the BassMaster there, which gives Tweeter Horn a re-tread in CD2, and Bush League Bradley for Gov.

This is all so predictable.

But with the NRCC already behind Frank, I guess Bestani is out for the count? And Stephen is a no-show.

Social Media Director for Jackie Cilley for Governor. Follow her on Twitter & Facebook!

Jersey Frank (4.00 / 2)
Has he even lived here the requisite seven years to run for Congress?

Kidding aside, one has to wonder whether he'll treat the seat like he has the mayoralty--a steppingstone to another office--or is this really what he wants to do?

And if people are interested how the voters of Manchester feel about his priorities, tune in or come by the public hearing on the budget Monday, May 4th at 6pm at Memorial High School.  Guinta's budget would lay off hundreds of city workers, including more than 200 teachers, and would sacrifice the quality of basic safety and city services.  What kind of platform is this for a Congressional campaign?

If this hearing is anything like the one that followed his last disastrous budget proposal, it could serve nicely as the proverbial door hitting him on the way out of Manchester.

I need a civics refresher (0.00 / 0)
OK, so you only have to be a US citizen (not a NH resident) for 7 years to run for Congress.  It's 7 years in NH to run for Governor, Executive Council, and State Senate.

[ Parent ]
which is why... (4.00 / 1)
Which why he ran for state rep in 2000 and not higher office...couldn't make the residency.

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

[ Parent ]
Adios Frank (4.00 / 2)
Great points, Chris. The biggest advantage we, as Manchester Democrats, have is that we know Frank Guinta's record. We live it everyday:

* increase in violent crime
* devalued homes
* failing schools
* lack of transportation infrastructure
* fraud exposed at City Hall
* no requests for federal stimulus money
* NHAC/shadow donors' tax gimmickry
* a municipal "tax cut" that will get you a large pizza at Papa John's (Sununu's)

When any rational CD-1 observer compares Guinta's record to Carol Shea-Porter's record of support for President Obama's agenda, no one will know why Mayor Guinta would ever deserve to be promoted to Congressman Guinta.

[ Parent ]
As a former opposition researcher. . . . (4.00 / 1)
I love it when Republicans write their own obituaries.  Makes life that much easier.

[ Parent ]
Guinta is only "a graduate" of Franklin Pierce Law Center (4.00 / 2)
When I mentioned to a FPLC professor that Guinta is "an esteemed graduate" of they corrected me. They said he was "a graduate" - not "an esteemed graduate" of the law school.

what is Guinta Inta ? (0.00 / 0)
Being a good NH Republican he may run on a platform of repealing the Federal Income Tax and leaving every man for himself.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. ~ Mark Twain

WMUR Debate, October 2010 (0.00 / 0)
Question for Frank Guinta:

"Mayor Guinta, you campaigned enthusiastically for George W. Bush, and considered yourself such a strong supporter that you trekked down to DC for his second inauguration. . . . How'd that work out for New Hampshire?"

Let's just hope his old boss (the Jebster) is whispering campaign advice in his ear.

Gobblygook (4.00 / 3)
Can't the NRCC find anyone to write a sentence that makes sense? "While this has been a traditionally challenging state for Republicans in recent elections..."

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Anybody remember Guinta's TV ads from 2005? (0.00 / 0)
The ones where he knocks, the door opens, and he whines about taxes?

I don't have some great revelation here, I just remember thinking how ridiculous it was that someone would vote for the man in that ad.  And I wasn't old enough to vote at the time.

2005 was a great lesson (4.00 / 2)
for NH Democrats to not assume anything. Each election is different, voters can tell when a campaign is on cruise control and they don't like it. Always campaign like your 10 points behind.

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

[ Parent ]
Ray is right: 10 pts behind (4.00 / 2)
I learned this from my predecessor Elaine Krasker.
But for now, Guinta jumping in has provided some great laughs. It sure looks like the death throes of the NH GOP, but still...we must always run as if ten points behind.
CSP is a great member of congress and a great campaigner. She is stronger than ever. This could be fun, wiping out their bench.
I know I know, ten points behind.
