CD-02-Fernald Out

by: Jennifer Daler

Wed Aug 05, 2009 at 06:16:51 AM EDT

Just got an e-mail from Mark Fernald announcing he has decided to withdraw from the Democratic primary field for US Rep from CD-02.

I am writing to let you know that I am withdrawing from the race for Congress in the 2nd NH District. I did not arrive at this decision easily. I felt that the time was right for my message of change based on our shared values:  community, equality, fairness, and democracy. But as I worked to build my campaign, I came to realize this is not the right time for a major campaign for me or my family. My son is entering college in the fall, and my daughter will be a junior in high school. The demands of the race have overcome my attempts to balance family, work, and politics.

He goes on to thank supporters and to say he will give his full support to the eventual nominee and to Democrats up and down the ticket.

I am sorry to see him leave the race. I am hoping we have a healthy, positive primary to really discuss issues and solutions for 2010 and beyond.

Whoa. (4.00 / 5)
This really changes the dynamics of the race.

Thanks for considering the run in the first place, Mr. Fernald.  And you are still most welcome to come to the BH Bash on the 24th!

I hope Mark comes to the bash anyway, (4.00 / 2)
if I see him I will reinforce this. Mark's dad jogs past my house almost every day.

November 2012
Hope for a return to sanity.

Mark we will miss you! (4.00 / 8)
The dialogue of the race will be poorer for the loss of Mark's voice as a candidate.

As a candidate it is nice to have one less opponent, but Mark has always been such a class guy, that you hate to lose his insights and commentary. If I know Mark though, and I hope this is the case, he will make sure to ask the rest of us his tough questions. It will make all of us better for his continued involvement.

Mark Fernald Offers Much... (4.00 / 2)
...to the Democratic Party and to the state, and he's still young and energetic and will be part of its future.

Let's remember that as a member of the State Senate, he was one of the several -- along with Rick Trombly, Bev Hollingworth, Clif Below, and Burt Cohen and others -- who challenged the then-strong Republicans, backing them to the wall on issues of import.

His 2002 Gubernatorial campaign, while unsuccessful for a variety of reasons, got New Hampshire citizens to seriously consider the need for tax reform.  If his opponent hadn't spent $11 million to buy the office, and if national events were different, he might have been a several-term Governor.

and if wishes were fishes (0.00 / 0)
there would be a lot more fish in the sea.

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

"Presidents Clinton and Gore" (4.00 / 5)
If I heard the clip correctly President Obama expressed appreciation to the work of "Presidents Clinton and Gore" for the release of the two Americans from North Korea. He may have said President Clinton and Gore but it was still very nice to hear even if I misheard it.

I have been thinking about Al Gore alot lately with all of the similarities between the Florida GOP riot in 2000 and what they are now doing to congressional town meetings.

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

You and Twomey (0.00 / 0)
The efforts to disrupt communications between elected officials by the force of noise is an echo of the 'Brooks Brothers riots' in Florida in 2000 which likewise used noise, force and threats to disrupt the counting of ballots. We did not respond adequately to that attack on democracy and paid the price with eight years of disaster.

Ray,
I'd really like to see OFA come up big on this. Who could think of a better reason to call a muster?

Yes. (4.00 / 3)
I think you are going to see significant push back on these thugs.

As the Budget Crumbles (4.00 / 2)
Mark Fernald knows the realities of NH's awful, terribly unfair revenue structure.
As we near the tipping point where real change comes,
Mark's steady voice of fiscal sanity and fairness is needed.

No'm Sayn?
