Palin Achieves Impossible: Lowers Bar on GOP Discourse

by: Dean Barker

Fri Aug 07, 2009 at 22:19:02 PM EDT

I'm beginning to think there is something clinically wrong with this woman.  I'm not sure even a normally amoral opportunist, such as she has demonstrated herself to be thus far, would put out a statement like this:
The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's "death panel" so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their "level of productivity in society," whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

Dear Traditional Yankee Republican: while you may not agree with everything the Democrats stand for, please know that at the very least we will try to treat you like the adult you are. I hope you will consider us in 2010 as we continue to work on practical, real world solutions to real world problems.

(More): part of a comment from "nashua-mike" in the Monitor coverage of this:

Palin is relevant because hers is today's face of the Republican Party, which is a party that is not only without any ideas, but is quickly finding that it no longer represents mainstream American values of progress, community, fairness and inclusion.

And so, what is left of the Republican Party is a party of fear, hatred and irrationality.

As such, the dwindling of the Republican Party into a party of misanthropes
is a significant loss for America.

Because a viable healthy democracy demands a health exchange of ideas - on all sides of the political fence.

More-er: and the cherry on top. You couldn't make it up if you tried.

Maybe she really is dumber than Jennifer Horn. . . .

the reason ds are doing well... (0.00 / 0)
...is because centrists did not buy into "crazy" in the '06 or '08 cycles, and this cannot be helping going forward.

you have hit on exactly the tone we need to take to make this hurt "crazy" again in '10, and i hope we keep that in mind for the next 15 months or so.

and now (4.00 / 2)
she'll stand back and complain that the media is talking about her family, even though she is actually the one who is using them so crassly.  She is one of the most amoral opportunists I've ever seen.

Just to be clear, (0.00 / 0)
This nonsense about the government putting people to death, aren't they supposedly getting that from what's actually a Republican-sponsored provision encouraging (voluntary) people to have a Living Will, thereby avoiding the Big Government Healthcare Intervention that plagued Terri Schiavo?

It's working. They're scaring the bejeezus out of seniors.. (4.00 / 1)
.. if my wife's and my dads are any indication. My father thinks Obama is "going to take away his healthcare and give it to the illegal immigrants". My father-in-law is convinced that he will be euthanized if the bill passes- and he's not joking or exaggerating. He is upset because he believes we care so little about him that we are supporting Obama's plan to do this.

Both of these men are college educated, in their early 80s', and vote. They have been drifting right for years, but in the last six months their heads have exploded. There is probably nothing you could tell them about how bad Obama is that they wouldn't believe.

It's been my experience that some people postulate (0.00 / 0)
the most desperate situation in order to be reassured that's not going to happen.
Democrats need to be steadfast in their promise that everything is going to be OK.

It really is useful to have a party for people who want to be (0.00 / 0)
directly involved in governing and another for people who prefer to be represented and not have to make any substantive decisions.  The latter, of course, are in particular need of competent representatives, which the current Republican party seems incapable of providing.  So, yes, it's desperation time for traditional Republicans.

I was in the Twilight Zone. I couldn't understand why I couldn't see what it says I should see...

Have you written a letter to the editor today? Have you donated today? Have you put up signs? Have you made calls? Have you talked to your neighbors?

There was a user who (4.00 / 1)
requested his account ended.

Consequently, it ate into user's comments here and replies.

So that's why the numbers make no sense.
