NH-St. Sen: Gatsas Gone

by: Dean Barker

Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 19:42:44 PM EST

State Senate District 16, comprising "Bow, Candia, Dunbarton, Hooksett and Wards 1, 2 and 12 in the city of Manchester" is now up for grabs:
Manchester Mayor elect Ted Gatsas has resigned his State Senate seat, which will set up a special election to replace him this winter.

...It now most likely that a primary will occur in January and a general election in Feburary.

We now have a chance to fill this seat with someone who will not sponsor bills like this:
I. No abortion shall be performed upon an unemancipated minor or upon a female for whom a guardian or conservator has been appointed pursuant to RSA 464-A because of a finding of incompetency, until at least 48 hours after written notice of the pending abortion has been delivered in the manner specified in paragraphs II and III.

II. The written notice shall be addressed to the parent at the usual place of abode of the parent and delivered personally to the parent by the physician or an agent.

III. In lieu of the delivery required by paragraph II, notice shall be made by certified mail addressed to the parent at the usual place of abode of the parent with return receipt requested and with restricted delivery to the addressee, which means the postal employee shall only deliver the mail to the authorized addressee. Time of delivery shall be deemed to occur at 12 o'clock noon on the next day on which regular mail delivery takes place, subsequent to mailing.

Gatsas Too Busy (4.00 / 2)
According to the Pindell, Gatsas is too busy being mayor elect:

My recent election as Mayor of Manchester will requite my full attention and therefore I will be unable to perform my duties," he wrote about the Senate.

This week, our soon to be erstwhile Mayor Guinta brought in a proposal to hire four new police officers in light of a recent crime spike. Although Gatsas had supported the proposal prior to the election, now that he has won Gatsas says we can't afford it.

Only one other alderman voted with Gatsas - Bill Shea in Ward 7, which is a real head shaker, since it is Shea's ward 7 that was the district where two murders and a major drug bust took place in recent weeks. What the heck is he thinking? Oh, right, Gatsas supported Shea after the nominal Democratic alderman endorsed Gatsas.

Gatsas's comment on the recent spate of violent crime, which included the murder of a woman by her estranged husband, in the UL:

"I think it's important that we all understand that those tragedies happen," Gatsas said

Nope, nothing we can do about it, no sense trying.

Perhaps Mayor Guinta will end up not being the worst mayor ever in history after all.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

That police prevent crime is an illusion. Violent crimes are (0.00 / 0)
typically committed by people who don't think about the consequences of being caught and, if they're repeat offenders, expect to do "better" next time.
Shutting the barn door after the horses are gone is a no-brainer, and, yet, the security community keeps persuading us to do just that.

On the other hand, men killing women is an all too common event and because our agents of law enforcement have learned that domestic conflicts are likely to be lethal to outsiders, they are reluctant to get involved.  Hiring more of them won't change that.

So how then do you explain... (4.00 / 1)
the significant decrease in crime after the Clinton program of putting 10,000 additional cops on the street and the subsequent increase in crime when Bush ended it?

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

It's my impression that all categories of crime usually dealt with by cops, with (0.00 / 0)
the exception of violent crimes such as the murder of women and children, have actually decreased, in large part because of the changing demographic.  Also, effective prosecutions and actually locking people up, neither of which cops are responsible for, help some.

On the other hand, crime statistics are fundamentally unreliable since they mostly count arrests and charges and there's no follow-up in terms of convictions and/or valid guilty pleas.

There's no question that white collar thievery has increased substantially, but those crooks aren't targeted by cops either.  Arresting people for liquor and drug violations makes the numbers look good.  Durham tries to give anywhere from 20 to 50 college students a criminal record most weekends.
