NH-02: And Then There Were Three

by: Dean Barker

Thu Jan 14, 2010 at 05:23:56 AM EST

We don't have to wonder about Katrina Swett anymore - she has filed for a run. (h/t Bresler).

She immediately begins the race with huge CoH numbers transferred from her former Senate '08 run, to the tune of over 850K.

(This news certainly underscores the timing of Team Kuster's 50+ legislator endorsement, btw.)

Good development - (4.00 / 2)
Campaigns may find contested primaries annoying, and our September primary election date is problematic. But giving all segments of the Party an option, and avoiding the appearance of a backroom deal, and getting a real shakedown cruise in the primary - those are all healthy.

avoiding the appearance of a backroom deal? wtf ? n/t (0.00 / 0)

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

I think elwood was talking generally, not casting dispersions on any current candidates.

When one candidate is clearly out performing the others. it is not unthinkable for the "backroom deal" meme to be conjured up.

I don't think elwood was trying to play Merlin above. I do think it is a meme that must be closley checked.

Elwood was talking about... (4.00 / 6)
that at the Backroom Restaurant you get free refills with your soft drinks and more rolls if you ask for them - such a deal!

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

Jeez, I try SO hard to be fair and nice and unobjectionable. (4.00 / 3)
I'm speaking of contested primaries in general. I'm an "everybody in the pool!" fan.

Regarding primaries in general, there are often Dark Rumors that somebody in a party hierarchy or donor base is clearing the decks for a favored candidate. I suspect that happens less often than the rumors spring up. A broadly contested primary eliminates those rumors.

Boy, if the fans of each camp are gonna be THIS sensitive about it-could-be-a-slam-if-you-squint-hard, we're in for a long year.

What needs to happy to change this September primary thing. (4.00 / 2)
It seems like a clear and present danger to New Hampshire Democracy.

I say 4 year terms and A primary 6 months before election. Who's with me?

Here's the challenge with the June Primary... (4.00 / 1)
For the past 26 years we have had annual legislative sessions. If the gubernatorial, state senate and House members were running in their primary campaign while trying to balance their workload at the State House (nevermind their personal and professional lives)it could cause problems on many levels. I would also be concerned that the temptation the process would further be abused to grandstand and create attention getting chaos during the session even more than what the Jeb Bradley and his ilk.

I meant to add... (4.00 / 1)
if we held a June primary then the filing period would be the first of March...

right... ergo the move to 4 year terms (0.00 / 0)
to reduce the concerns of perpetual campaign.

I wonder if... (0.00 / 0)
I wonder if ANYONE would run for State Rep if there was a FOUR year commitmen--even if we got the salary up to $400.  Currently, approximately one third of the House members change every two years.  Even in the two year period, we have a number of resignations from folks who just have to devote more time to earning a living.

Risk of RSI (4.00 / 2)
You may want to check this web site out to learn more about RSI; I think you could be at risk:

Repetitive Strain Injury
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a potentially debilitating condition ... Anyone who uses a computer regularly is at risk and should know about RSI. Unfortunately, most people are uninformed and do not understand what RSI is or how serious it can be.

Typing Lieberman over and over isn't going to make support of him over five years ago an issue for the overwhelming majority of voters.

You mean. like (0.00 / 0)
how support for the Pre-emptive Invasion of Iraq had little to do with the outcome of the latest Democratic Presidential Primary?

2004/2008 (4.00 / 3)
In the 2004 nominating process, the two candidates who were on record on opposing the Iraq invasion did not win the nomination (Dean and Kucinich). If I am not mistaken, at least one of the other announced candidates was a strong supporter of John Kerry, who voted for the authorization bill. And, as you may recall, in NH in 2008, Senator Clinton defeated Senator Obama (since you mention the latest presidnetial primary).

I'm not supporting anyone in the 2nd CD, which I think I have said before, so don't get into your "attack the people opposing my candidate" mode. Just trying to keep the debate at a level that won't hurt us in November. And I think that level is a discussion of the issues on the table today, not sniping over who supported whom two or six years ago. It takes a whole party to win in November.

I'm staying out of these 2nd CD discussions until further notice.  If Annie's supporters want to make her look bad by going negative, far be it for me to stand in their way.

Not her fault (4.00 / 2)
Annie is not responsible for Burt.  Annie is one of the most positive and upbeat people I know!

So, to anyone reading this who might think Burt speaks for Annie, rest assured he does not!

Is questioning Swett's judgement an attack? (4.00 / 1)
It may be personal, but it is a pertinent issue.

Swett stood tall next to Lieberman AFTER he left the party. That wasn't very long ago, was it?

Another flaw in her judgement seems to be a fixation on money, as in money=victory. A topic discussed right here on BH.

I think the two matters go hand in hand.

These are real issues, issues of judgement. Of course, that is nothing BUT personal. I'm not sure how we can navigate discussing such topics, to be honest, without spiraling out of control. The personalities here, blogging, are not as refined as the candidates themselves. For myself, let me make clear, I have no animosity for Katrina Swett. If I was to meet her, I would thank her profusley for her service to NH, the nation and for continuing her father's work. I am convinced that staying at the helm of that foundation is where Katrina Swett can do her best.

In conclusion, I'd like to note that the "Lieberman Issue" is very sensitive for Swett and I would not assume that her campaign wants it to be fluffed by folks like me. So when the backlash comes, I will assume most of the indignation is more strategic than heartfelt.

This is not our first rodeo.

Game ON! (4.00 / 1)
...And may the most progressive win.  Sounds like we've got three legitimate contenders who can talk seriously about real issues.  Exciting, especially compared to the "I'm more tea-party than thou" race on the other side.

Sure, I voted for less government and less government spending...just NOT the parts that I benefit from!
