Tactical Error? Poll Finds Majority of NH Republican Voters Support Marriage Equality/Civil Unions

by: Jennifer Daler

Tue Feb 09, 2010 at 11:34:18 AM EST

With all the hue and cry and warrant articles set to either take away or put a minority's civil rights to a "popular vote", it is interesting that a recent poll obtained by nhpoliticalreport.com (subscription required) shows

   * A whopping 59 percent of Republican voters say they support either civil unions or full on gay marriage as opposed to the 40 percent who don't support any legal recognition.

This is a bi-partisan civil rights issue. Trying to make it a wedge issue and even forcing the article onto town warrants will undoubtably backfire, as well it should.

Also, according to Pindell, the poll tilted towards conservatives (76%) and more males than females.

Have we (0.00 / 0)
got somebody in Londonderry to call "foul" on this?  Maybe file a suit?  Contact the NHCLU?  Seriously, why do we have any laws at all if a bunch of haters can use mob tactics to supercede them?  If they can't get it any other way, will they just bombard all the legislators with hate messages until they give in?

Sure, I voted for less government and less government spending...just NOT the parts that I benefit from!

Bi-Partisan Majority Opposes Amendment And Repeal (4.00 / 4)
And a bi-partisan majority of the House Judiciary Committee voted today in identical 12-8 votes to oppose CACR 28, a Constitutional Amendment to outlaw same-gendered marriages or Civil Unions, and House Bill 1590, which would have repealed last year's HB 436, which provides for marriage equality.

Both bills will be on the House floor next Wednesday.  It goes to show yet again that on this issue, Democrats and Republicans and all of us can come together to oppose returning to the discrimination of yesteryear.  It's not the New Hampshire Way to take votes away from our neighbors.

[I'm a former has-been House member and State Senator, but I keep "Rep." on my ID name for easy reference of previous posts.]

True (4.00 / 1)
This is true when you are in a legislative chamber rationaly discussing the issue. Once it ends out in the public in a voting situation it becomes mob rule. All it takes is for organizations like MassResistance to start spreading their venom and lies over the internet to end reasonable discourse.

You would not have called it rational discussion (4.00 / 4)
...if you had actually heard the debate.  There was entirely enough venom to go around.  I am proud and honored to stand in the company of the 11 other members of NH House Judiciary who spoke eloquently and then voted for equality, inclusiveness, stable families, and religious freedom for all the citizens of New Hampshire.

Here is a fact that should help you to fight a little longer.
Things that don't actually kill you outright make you stronger.

This is in line with polling I saw last Spring n/t (4.00 / 3)
Sununu is stuck in the 1980s.

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

The thing you have to remember about New Hampshire Republican voters is that they're New Hampshirites.
