Peter Christian's Shuttered

by: Dean Barker

Mon Feb 15, 2010 at 21:29:28 PM EST

My heart is breaking:
Peter Christian's Tavern suddenly closed its doors last week after nearly 35 years as a staple of New London's Main Street.

The bar and restaurant didn't open for business Friday, residents said. "Peter Christian's Tavern is closed to further notice," read a sign on the door greeting would-be diners yesterday.

Going to Peter Christian's is one of my earliest memories of New Hampshire.  And since moving to the New London area, I've been there fairly often - just last week, in fact.

We even have at home a much beloved and used, dog-eared copy of a PC's recipe book from back in the '70s or '80s.

(iirc, weren't there were other PC's once upon a time in the Keene area and Hanover?)

My favorite part about PC's is (was? alack!) the decor.  The round wood cubbies and house plants were very 1970's-ish, and always brought back memories to me of an earlier time.

Great beef stew, the famous mustard, trivial pursuit, friendly staff, not overpriced.

I'm pretty much happy to be at home most of the time.  After five years of living in Manhattan, I don't really get excited much in the way of wining and dining locally.

But this was a cruel blow.

Here's hoping there is some way that PC's can rise from the ashes.

UPDATE: And now there is a Facebook group to mourn the loss.

Agreed! Also as a newly ordained Lake Sunapee - Dartmouth region resident I was aghast at the news of PC's closing. I had heard the rumor as well and was very sad! I hope the same that either PC's can re - open or if a new restaurant opens that it retains the feel of warmth and home. PC's will surely be missed in the eyes of the upper valley and in the eyes of politics in New Hampshire.

Although it was a necessity for me to close Peter Christian's Tavern, I am deeply sadden for its patrons, employees, (past and present), and friends who came to the tavern to eat, celebrate and enjoy.PC's has been a part of me and my family for over 25 years and a landmark of New London for thirty five; and its closing will leave a void. It was with that knowledge that I tried to keep the tavern open and operating, but unfortunately I lost the financial battle. I want to thank everyone for their hard work and patronage and wish everyone well. I am looking to the future with the memories of Peter Christian's Tavern fondly in my heart.

Very, very, sad indeed. (4.00 / 3)
Yes, there was a PC's in Keene, and some of us old timers actually used to play music in there back in the day. We were sad when the only one left was in New London, but were always happy to come in for lunch on many occasions when visiting our New London relatives.

Passing of an era; maybe someone could resurrect it, but it would never be the same.

I feel the same way about the old Folkway in Peterborough, where for many years much music was played and enjoyed along with plenty of excellent food and drink. These establishments are all New Hampshire treasures, and every time one of them goes down it diminishes our state just a bit more.

So, it's in our best interest to seek out and patronize the locally-owned places that remain, and send business their way whenever visitors come to town...

Hope for a return to sanity.

Hanover (4.00 / 2)
(iirc, weren't there were other PC's once upon a time in the Keene area and Hanover?)

Yes, there was a Peter Christian's in Hanover for many, many years.  Staple of my childhood.  I believe it closed some time in the late '90s.

a friend told me it hit the Concord Monitor! (0.00 / 0)
I don't mean to sound cold-hearted, but this is what happens (0.00 / 0)
when currency (money) is systematically siphoned out of the economy.  In the olden days, when the currency was a precious metal (gold) there were people who "clipped" the coins.  If that happened long enough, there would be nothing left.  They can't do that with paper money.  Nor can paper money be sequestered like gold in Fort Knox.  But, the paper or electronic currency can be even more easily "tied" up in speculative accounts.  Banks used to be in the business of lending money to real goods and service providers.  Now they lend it to people who inflate the value of other pieces of paper or land for conservation. (Who knows how much of the inflation in house values was a consequence of the perception, created by the conservation movement, that we were running out of desirable land--the "get it before it's all gone" sales stratagem?)
Anyway, we have to get the money flowing and keep it flowing in the real economy.  Grants from Washington do that.  But, if the financiers get their hands on it and sequester it in more speculative "products," we're right back where we started.
The alternative to the national debt is theft.

Peter Christian's started in Hanover (4.00 / 2)
in the mid 1970s, by Murray Washburn. (Peter Christian was his infant son.) He expanded into New London after a few years then later into Keene. The Keene restaurant has changed a few times since.

Sorry to see the closures.

Wow. (0.00 / 0)

I've been there many times. My sister went to Proctor and we always went there to spend some family time together. I'll miss it too.

I haven't been to the New London location in a bit ... (0.00 / 0)
.... but yes, I loved the old location in downtown Hanover (now a "wrap" place, quite generic).

Getting a beer in a Mason jar, tasty food and - as Dean notes - the tangy mustard and all at a fair price.

 Dang.

"We should pay attention to that man behind the curtain."

Ray of hope there, methinks. n/t (0.00 / 0)
