Richardson: "Some Sparks Will Fly" at Sunday's Debate

by: Dean Barker

Thu May 31, 2007 at 22:33:37 PM EDT

So, I sat in on a press conference call today from Bill Richardson (who is at 10% in one poll in NH), and here are a few items that stuck out for me, presented without commentary:

On the upcoming debate: "The format is a very good one." Because candidates will be allowed to ask each other questions, Richardson predicted that "some sparks will fly" on Sunday.

On Iraq: Richardson has a pretty vigorous two-pronged approach to getting us out of Iraq, including de-authorizing the war and making sure that all of our troops come home ("I don't advocate a residual force standing back.")

On the recent Iraq funding bill: "I'm disappointed in the Democratic Congress." "They've been using the wrong tactic." The right one for Richardson being revoking the AUMF.

Revoking the AUMF (0.00 / 0)
and continuing to write checks? Huh?

Did he say whether he would have voted for the supplemental?

Sen. Clinton did not, so she has a coherent position: end the authorization AND end the funds.

The funding angle (0.00 / 0)
was discussed as "the wrong tactic"; whether he would, as a Senator, vote for those while working to revoke the AUMF, I don't know.

I'm pretty fed up (0.00 / 0)
with having a changing majority of Dems decide that any given approach to ending this bloodbath is "the wrong approach," while refusing to work together on a working approach.

Kudos to the Dem Senators who voted against the supplemental.

It is amazing to me (4.00 / 1)
Richardson has in my mind been on a downward spiral since the first debate. There was the Whizzer White answer, which seemed to show someone more concered with sports history than reproductive rights, there have been a number of confusing answers, many seeming pure panders, the repeated Dem bashing, and while I didn't see the Meet the Press interview, it was painful to read the transcript.

I've written off Richardson as a possible candidate for me for the primary.

Tough times (0.00 / 0)
I feel like the whole field, sub-Clinton and Obama, is off its game. Edwards wonders why he can't crack the top two, Richardson wonders why he can't crack the top three, and everybody else has to be thinking about whether they should stay.

Dodd seems to be an exception, from the perspective of this site, but I'm not sure that's true "out in the world."

It's so early, and yet getting late.

the summer of bill (0.00 / 0)
I agree with Mike and Jim, Gov. Richardson's been getting beat up recently and he needs a momentum shift in a big way.  He needs to make the summer work for him, which is something I think Gov. Dean did very well.  He put on large outdoor events (Boston Common, his Burlington announcement) while his field organization (myself included) went about its business talking to teachers, retirees, and young people, all of whom have more time in the summer to get interested in the primary.  If Gov. Richardson has a tough time drawing the large crowds outdoors, stick to the tried and true house party/smaller "town hall-style" event.  Barbecue some chicken, keep the stump speech short, and mingle with people afterward, while letting the crowd mingle with one another (and have your staff hover for new volunteers/small donors).  I was constantly amazed how people in attendance would entwine their opinion of the event itself (good food? too hot? too late?) with the candidate, so if Gov. Richardson (or any candidate, for that matter) puts on fun, summer events, it might make a difference.  But Richardson in particular needs to cut loose a little.

Well, there have also been (0.00 / 0)
the TV commercials, which have worked well for him. Funny, effective, not negative. That's why he's at 10%.

He actually mentioned (0.00 / 0)
those commercials almost in the same breath as the 10%, and said they would be going into heavy rotation.

Dodd (0.00 / 0)
has taken Richarson's mantle for now in New Hampshire

Next time, there may be no next time.
