Sprintin' John Sununu's Latest Flip-Flop

by: Senate 2008 Guru

Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 23:42:54 PM EDT

(I'll say it again - Mr. President, the Granite State needs your presence. Please visit us! - promoted by Dean Barker)

[First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate 2008 Guru: Following the Races.]

It looks like Bush's low approvals have Sununu's advisors skittish, as they must have coached him on this most recent turnaround.

Four days ago:

In New Hampshire, Sununu eventually conceded that he would accept the president's help.

"Of course, I am hoping to accept any Republican support," he said, slipping through a members-only escape hatch, an emergency exit off the Senate floor.

Today's change of heart:

New Hampshire Senator John Sununu said he wouldn't campaign with George W. Bush next year ``in this climate'' because of the president's low job-approval ratings.

Sununu, a Republican facing a tough re-election, said ``the president's popularity, unfortunately, is at a fairly low level.'' He spoke in an interview with Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt,'' scheduled to air today.

Bush campaigned for Sununu in New Hampshire twice during the 2002 election, when Sununu beat Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, a former governor, by about 20,000 votes. Shaheen, who hasn't declared her candidacy, led Sununu 56 percent to 34 percent in a Concord Monitor poll of likely voters conducted this month.

See John Run.  Run John, Run.

Update by Dean: LOL!  Steve Marchand responds to the latest sprintin':

"Neither of us plan on campaigning with George Bush in 2008," said Marchand, "but only I can campaign without George Bush's record in 2008."

Bush Two not a candidate. (0.00 / 0)
Since Bush Two is unlikely to be a candidate in 2008, it would have to be Bush Two appearing with Sununu, rather than the other way around.
I only make that point because confusion about who's actually doing what to and for whom seems to abound in the Republican party--abetted, no doubt, by a press that's having a hard time keeping things straight.
For example, they keep writing about the White House doing this, that, or the other thing when we all know that houses don't act.  This may not seem important, but the verbiage allows the people who are doing things to evade being called to account.

What a goof (0.00 / 0)
If it really came down to it, there's no way he'd turn away the president. He'd look really foolish if he did, especially within the 11th Commandment GOP.

But again, if he's not calling him ... fine by me.
