On the Road Again

by: Cate Edwards

Tue Aug 21, 2007 at 14:03:34 PM EDT

(Let's give a warm welcome to Cate Edwards... the diary mainly talks about the bus tour, but she does mention she'll be responding to comments, so please leave her some... - promoted by Mike Caulfield)

Hi everyone.  I wanted to stop by Blue Hampshire today and let you all know how much my whole family is looking forward to the "Fighting for One America" New Hampshire bus tour.  You may have heard that last week, my mom and dad, plus brother and sister, spent a week traveling across Iowa. I, sadly, missed out.  However, I couldn't turn down the chance to hop on the New Hampshire bus, and spend a few days campaigning with my family before school starts next week.

New Hampshire was actually the first place I campaigned by myself for my Dad in 2003.  I spoke with a group of high school students before doing an event with the "Students for Edwards" group at Dartmouth College.  I still remember how nervous I was that day - it was only through the good graces of my New Hampshire hosts, who were with me, that I got through those first events.

This time around, things are a bit different.  Those high school students from 2003 are likely almost college graduates now and they'll all be able to vote in this election.  We've had 4 more years of a disastrous Republican administration and the country is ready for change. I think that is why there is already so much excitement around our campaign.  Things are already in full-swing in New Hampshire and I'm excited to feel that energy and to meet with the thousands of people who have already come out in support of my Dad, and hopefully, convince a few more of you to join us.

We've certainly got a full schedule. We'll make 15 stops over 4 days.  The Fighting for One America bus tour will take us all across the state to talk with voters about some of the most important issues facing our country like how we can work together to achieve energy independence and halt global warming, our need for true universal health care, the importance of rewarding work and strengthening the middle class, and of course, ending the war in Iraq and bringing our troops home.

We hope you can join us at one of the many stops along the tour, but if you can't, I will be blogging from the bus so you can follow us along on our trip virtually on johnedwards.com/nh.  As for me, I'm starting my trip today, leaving North Carolina and driving up the coast to Boston before meeting up with my parents on Thursday for the kick-off event at Dartmouth College.  I'll check back in later tonight and look forward to your comments.

Thanks for posting... (4.00 / 7)
and sharing your thoughts.  Let's hope those new voters make intelligent choices, no matter what they decide.  I see many younger voters who seem to decide on surface issues, but there's not much to back up these decisions once the surface is pierced.  That concerns me.

In any event, despite what the pundits and conventional wisdom tell us, let's keep the faith that other forces are at work on the ground, and that your dad will confound the country when it's actually time for the votes of real people, those to whom he is speaking, to be counted.

Hope you have a great bus trip! (4.00 / 5)
Your father has the right plans for changing America.  Good luck!

Thanks for Posting Cate (4.00 / 5)
I love personal viewpoints in posts.  It is fun to read about the perspective of the campaign from one of the family.

You are absolutely right that young people need to pay attention to this presidential race.  It will make a huge difference in their lives.

John Edwards does have the plans and the leadership that we need to see America become the wonderful country it can truly be for ALL its citizens.

Look forward to your reports.

We're so happy you're able to join your family for the New Hampshire bus tour - and looking forward to your reports.

Your father is serious about the presidency - avoiding the use of gimmicks and videos that distract from the Issues - because he's a Progressive. WooHoo!

Welcome Cate - Glad you are blogging. (4.00 / 5)
It looks like a great tour just wrapped up in Iowa and looking to HN for another one.

I hope NH is just as full and jam packed with stops all over.  It is so important to get Senator Edwards message out to the people.

HE is leading on so many issues and Universal Health Care is a critical one for me, with inclusion of mental illnesses.

Please come back and blogg again, and tell your parents I appreciate they dedication to making America a better place for us all.

All votes should count - one vote/one person.

Thanks Cate for keeping us in the loop! (4.00 / 4)
I'm looking forward to hearing about all the positive responses the campaign will receive in NH, especially after Iowa. 15 stops in 4 days! Wow, this has got to be the hardest working campaign - all the best and look forward to your blog.

WFH

always great to have everyone on the bus! (4.00 / 5)
You are so right that much has changed in the past 4 years. Unfortunately, not enough has changed in Washington where we need your dad the most. Have a great week with your family and the wonderful folks in New Hampshire. And keep us posted on the kind of reception and questions you all receive along the way.

While in NH, check out America's Stonehenge! (4.00 / 5)
When i lived in New England, I did some exploring around New Hampshire. (I'm from, and live in Charlotte, NC)
In the North Salem area something they call "America's Stonehenge", which is an ancient village made of stones, much of which is still intact.

Taking the train up Mt. Washington might be fun, and a great way to beat the heat.

Thanks for keeping in touch.
Here's to a great victory!

Beat the heat? (4.00 / 3)
it would do that.

Sleet, 72 MPH winds, and freezing weather forced cancellation of the bike race up Mount Washington Saturday.

Good heavens! (4.00 / 2)
It is 100 degrees here. Tough call...

Probably best to forego Mt. Washington...

Sounds fascinating. (4.00 / 2)
I'm going to have to check that out sometime.

Thank (4.00 / 2)
Mike for fp'ing!

Disclaimer - Don't know if I technically still need one since no longer work in NH, but am paid staffer at AFL-CIO :)

That is quite a schedule! (4.00 / 4)
Thanks for sharing the experience with us. Senator Edwards has many important issues to take to New Hampshire. It is great that people in New Hampshire will be able to meet the family that everyone in North Carolina is so proud of!

I'm happy to see you will be on the NH tour! (4.00 / 4)
You set a wonderful example for those new voters in that you are engaged, hopeful and work hard.

Your dad sets a good example, too, to all voters by focusing on how we can make our country better.  He doesn't just accept the status quo simply because that is what is expected, he fights for what is right.

I hope you have a journey this week that you will always remember with excitement and pride!

Hi Cate (4.00 / 6)
What a wonderful time of the year to go to a great place like New Hampshire. I was able to spend a wonderful August in New England once and you won't see the oppressive humidity you see in many places this time of year.

I understand your father and mother are big fans of the late Senator Robert F Kennedy. I am too, and I once made a video that shows how I see your father in that 'bigger picture'.  While I realize he was from MA and not NH, perhaps some of our New Hampsire friends would like to see it and I hope you like it too.

Have a great week. Don't forget to try some of that wonderful maple syrup while you are there.

Hi Carolina (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for including the video.I tell everyone to watch it. I campaigned for RFK in '68 and the first time I watched it, I was reminded of why we need John and Elizabeth Edwards in the White House. (I would suggest Cate have the maple syrup on pancakes.)

You and your sibs (4.00 / 4)
add a great dimension to the bus tour.  I can't get over how the little ones have grown.  I was so impressed with your poise and energy last time.  Your parents are rightfully proud of you and I appreciate your willingness to share them with us. New Hampshire is still up for grabs no matter what the pundits say so your presence is necessary.  Thank you and hope to see you but if not I'll be following your blog!

standing on the sidelines looking for a reason to enter the fray.

NH people are SOOOO lucky! (4.00 / 3)
Well, Cate, I must say those folks in NH are very lucky to have your family visiting them. Green with envy, that's what I am. ;-)

On Tour In New Hampshire (4.00 / 3)
Hi Cate,

I'm a big fan of your family, yes, all of you!  I'm sorry you couldn't make the Iowa tour, it was fantastic.  The crowds kept getting bigger and bigger at each stop.

Looking forward to meeting you.  I love your Dad and Mom, Emma Claire, and Jack, and I'm sure I will love you also.

I've been waiting since 2004 for this moment to be able to vote for your Dad in this election.  No one is better than your Dad to take on this situation that now faces all of us.
Glad to see you on the tour and I know that many young people will be there to join with you.

Kudos to my favorite American family!  Thank you for sharing your family with us...takes special people to do that!

Welcome (4.00 / 2)
Hey Cate,
We are glad you can join us, and apologies for Elwood. It will be 90 on Saturday, a great day to come out and Rally in Concord at 5pm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next time, there may be no next time.

Welcome to NH! (0.00 / 0)
I will be at Cate Park in Wolfeboro on Friday and look forward to seeing you. I hope you enjoy your trip.

Law School Question (0.00 / 0)
Hi Cate,

I'm a huge fan of both of your parents, and a few years ago, I also became a fan of Prof. Warren of Harvard Law.  I hope you were blessed to have her in class.  I was so excited to see that she contributed to the Poverty book; I've followed her writing and her testimony to Congress closely and before the book came out I had been working up the courage to act any candidate I saw about what she wrote & said about the shrinking middle class.  I feel that crunch everyday--we're a typical middle class home-owning family (lesbian moms) with 2 kids and if we tighten our budget any further, we'll be eating ramen noodles 3x a day! It was a releif to read actual research confirming that we (as a country) aren't really spending more on clothing or luxuries as is often assumed. I buy all our kids clothing at discount places or 2nd hand shops (never paid more than $7 for anything!)! And we are still struggling!!  It's nuts.

My question for you is about what Prof Warren writes & researches...Did you study under her? What are your thought on the current credit situation in this country.  What do you think of it all?

See you at the tours end in Portsmouth.  Look for my twins in their "Road To One America" wagon!  ;-)
