Magical September Has Arrived - with an Update!

by: Dean Barker

Sun Sep 02, 2007 at 20:49:40 PM EDT

See you, in September... wait, it's here!

Magical September, when ponies fall from the sky, and General Petraeus reads words written from the White House that say, "Don't worry, vulnerable Republicans such as John E. Sununu, you can take well-publicized baby steps away from us to show your manly vigor, but basically we're counting on you to make sure we can keep boots on the ground in Iraq until it's some other president's problem."  Or something like that.

September is also the magic month that will, one hopes, finally end the holding pattern that is the Democratic side of the senate race:

He [Bill Shaheen] predicts his wife, a three-term governor who lost to Sununu in the 2002 election, will make a decision on whether to enter the race before the end of the month. Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand, Bow's Katrina Swett and Jay Buckey, a former astronaut and Dartmouth Medical School professor, are competing for the Democratic nomination.

"It's not fair to the other people to drag this out," Shaheen said.

Me, I hope she enters and, likewise, that no one drops out because of it.  But we shall see...

And finally, our long awaited update is here.  First of all, that annoying problem that turned certain cut and pasted punctuation marks into question marks is fixed (hoo-ray!).

Secondly, we now have Ajax-ified comments!  That means you don't have to refresh your page to post a comment or see new ones. To enable this feature, click on your page in the Menu at top of the right margin, then "Profile", then "Comment Prefs".  Finally, click the box next to the phrase "Use Ajax Comments," and you should be good to go.  If you are using Internet Explorer and find that this feature is causing issues, please unclick the box (Soapblox is still working on getting out all the bugs).

Dean I feel like you do about Jeanne declaring and having an open race...but how does Marchand finesse his pledge ?

Next time, there may be no next time.

up for the primary process.  We shouldn't be afraid to work it out as long as everyone stays positive and speaks to their strengths.

Where do we go from here?

Yes, don't drop (0.00 / 0)
... unless you honestly look at the race and decide you can't win. If you think you can't win, you can't win. And if so, don't feel bad about it. There's always another campaign.

But again, if you can win, or if your message is so important that you must run even though you risk losing, run Lola run. No honest campaign ever loses anything -- people gain by working on them.

all the candidates stay in the race. No matter who wins the primary and runs against Sununu, we have another one of Bush's acolytes to send home in 2010. The experience gained by each newer campaign can be used then as well.

We have an "embarassment of riches" as it were, even if Governor Shaheen decides not to run. And having experienced campaigners waiting in the wings for 2010 is an added bonus.

Declarations (0.00 / 0)
I agree with previous postings that say Shaheen should announce one way or the other in the very near future. I am not sure that any sensible politician could walk away from an opportunity like this, with a solid primary field, but nothing of Shaheen's caliber, in my opinion. If her heart is not in it, then that is fine, but I would certainly take heed of the early polling numbers and her past victories. That being said, I am coming home from school next summer to work on a Dem's campaign, so if she isn't there, I'll move on like everyone else.
