Site Note on Campaign Disclosure

by: Dean Barker

Recently, we admins noticed this comment thread on a recommended diary, and the oddities it posed made us look a little deeper than we normally would.

As the comment thread revealed, users pinballwizard, elf, shley24, MTAY all registered in succession to recommend the diary. A further look by us revealed that:

 * they had registered within minutes of each other, including another user a bit later, janbaby, who  was not among the recommenders,
 * the same IP address was used by all of them, and is registered to the Clinton campaign,
 * two other recommenders, blues and kmeisje, also registered from the same IP address.

To be clear, and to reiterate what's stated in our Getting Started page: paid campaign staff are welcome in this community, but are asked to disclose their affiliation to a campaign, either through their signature line, a disclosure statement on a diary, or even in the choosing of a username. The fact that all the users mentioned above came from a Clinton campaign IP, but did not register with campaign email addresses, and avoided making comments or diaries, instead only recommending pro-Clinton diaries, strikes us as gaming the system and a form of "recommend astroturf."  As a result, we have banned those accounts, and will do so again for undisclosed paid staffers of any campaign if need be.

We have spoken with Kathleen Strand, who assured us that this was not an orchestrated effort but the product of over-eager staffers and volunteers, done without her awareness, and that it will not be repeated.  We appreciate her responsiveness and believe that this may indeed be a misunderstanding of low-level staffers of the norms of the site.

Why mention it then? Because while initial acts like these are very small, when a community starts to sense there is no enforcement of the norms of the site, a slow slide into anarchy inevitably begins. It's our hope by drawing the line here, and showing our willingness to preserve the integrity of discussion on this site that we will avoid less trivial machinations in the future.

I'd ask people to be respectful in the comments -- Team Clinton is the subject of this post, but it is meant to be a warning shot across the bow of all campaigns. And further, it is the fact that we do manage to have civilized discussions here among opponents that makes this line worth drawing.

Not in the shot

There really is a noticeable difference (4.00 / 6)
between a) organized dirty trick campaigns and b) half-witted acts by volunteers or staffers.

The use of computers easily traced to a campaign and the sequential registrations are pretty solid evidence that this is b), IMHO.

I'll repeat something I said back in the days of the Bass sockpuppet: if a campaign operative simply comes to a site like this and registers openly, and makes his/her case openly, s/he will be MUCH more effective. If Furtado had said, "I know this is a Democratic site, but I hope you will let me explain some confusion about the Congressman's vote..." he would have done Charlie a world of good.

Only a pessimist would call a Clinonista sockpuppet
half-dirty. An optimist would say half-witted."

My opinion (0.00 / 0)

One sees the value in full disclosure or one finds value in anonymity.

No indication is given that anybody really "knows" whether pinballwizard, elf, shley24, MTAY, or janbaby, blues or kmeisje actually violated any of the posted BlueHampshire rules.

"Suspicion" that they did has resulted in banned accounts.

I mean, really, don't they have a right to promote information favorable to their candidate?

Maybe anonymity isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Well, if you read closely (4.00 / 3)
We *do* actually *know*. The technical info is really irrefutable.

We're not in a big rant about it because by itself it is not that big a deal. I initially didn't want to post on it at all. But I think what Laura and Dean have said is right -- the problem is it's the thin edge of the wedge. And not really just for Clinton. If we become known as a place that can be gamed, we lose credibility. People start wondering if they are talking to a person on the street with an opinion, or a person on the payroll. Bad behavior attracts bad behavior.

And no -- you can't use anonymity to promote your candidate.  On the internet, no one knows you're a dog. But if you're a dog on a candidate's payroll that's relevant. The community needs to know that. That needs to be disclosed.

You disclose that when commenting by dropping a sig line in, while recommending by adding it to your bio, or if your status is easily discoverable (as with Kathy) by using your full name. Once you do that, people have the info they need to take or leave what you say, and you can say whatever you want, do whatever you want, and rec whatever you want.

All this is settled -- and actually the reason this isn't a huge deal is the Clinton campaign already knows this -- they just maybe need to communicate it downward once again. In fact, if one thing happens from this it is that I hope all campaigns are sitting down with their staff this morning and having "the talk".

Full Disclosure
Paid campaign staffers, workers, and elected politicians' staffers are very much invited to join the conversation here with comments and diaries, but are asked to provide full disclosure.
