Forget Billy Shaheen: Burns and Obama Speak the Same Language

by: Dean Barker

Tue Dec 18, 2007 at 22:21:57 PM EST

A Ken Burns endorsement in New Hampshire is big news; Senator Obama should count himself as lucky to have it.

But the even bigger story riding on top of this is why the Walpole documentarian decided to speak out.  He says we need "a leader who calls upon on each and every one of us to heed the better angels of our nature and not - and not - our basest fears."  Clearly this is a reference to the Senator Clinton's terrible, awful, not very good last week, courtesy of Billy Shaheen.

Looking beyond that, though, I see in Burns someone who speaks Obama's language. And I mean that quite literally.  Here's Ken talking about his WWII doc, a little over a year ago:

World War II was the last time America was united behind a common goal, what Burns called "the greatest collective effort in the history of our country." Common sacrifice is lacking today, he said.

"We now have a military class in this country that suffers apart and alone, whereas there wasn't a family on any street in America that wasn't in some way touched by the war," he said, adding that during World War II, everyone had to do without and had to deal with rationing and shortages.

"When 9/11 happened, what were you asked to do? Nothing. Go shopping. That's what we were told," Burns said. "Go shopping. It's ridiculous. Nobody said, 'This is a war borne of oil. Turn your thermostats down five degrees.'"

Now listen to Senator Obama, from less than two weeks ago:
The sacrifices made by previous generations have never been easy. But America is a great nation precisely because Americans have been willing to stand up when it was hard; to serve on stages both great and small; to rise above moments of great challenge and terrible trial.

One of those moments took place on September 11, 2001. Whether you lived in Manhattan or here in Mount Vernon, you felt the pain and loss of that day not just as an individual, but as an American. That's why we lined up to give blood. That's why we held vigils and flew flags. That's why we rallied behind our President. We had a chance to step into the currents of history. We were ready to answer a new call for our country. But the call never came. Instead, we were asked to go shopping, and to prove our patriotism by supporting a war in Iraq that should never have been authorized, and never been waged.

We have lost precious time. Our nation is less secure and less respected in the world. Our energy dependence has risen, and so has the specter of climate change.

Add to that the fact that Burns' collaborator and fellow Walpole man Dayton Duncan already endorsed Obama a while back, and today's news makes perfect sense.

Can't wait for (0.00 / 0)
the Ken Burns video of Barack's life that they'll show at the DNC this summer.  Talk about being able to tell an American story.

I have to say, when I read Ken Burn's statements regarding why he decided not to be neutral, I got a few chills.  And I harkened back to only a week ago when people were scratching their heads and wondering why CSP had gone back on her statement that she wouldn't endorse anyone.

When I've written postcards to my neighbors here in New Boston, I've explained to them that this is the first time that I've really reached out on a personal level and asked people to vote for a specific candidate.  Talking face-to-face to people you know about politics can be pretty uncomfortable at times, it can be a huge risk... unlike here on BH where we're all fairly anonymous (or at least sight unseen)... So, why do it?  Because the stakes are too high this time not to.

We have lost precious time, and this is our moment, and I'm so glad that Ken Burns, along with Obama, has decided to seize it.

Feeling hopeful since 2004...now "Secretary" of the New Boston Democratic Caucus

Dumpster diving my Obama e-mails (4.00 / 1)
The importance of Ken Burns' work, especially the latest series "The War" has been known to NH Veterans for Barack Obama for some time now.

1.  The War
You are invited to join some of us from the campaign and a few of our veteran supporters to the public screening of Ken Burns' documentary "The War" (see below).  The screening will take place at the Capitol Center for the Arts, 44 South Main St. Concord, NH, 7 PM, Thursday, June 28th.  There is also a Q &A with Ken Burns at this event!

The campaign does not have access to tickets but they are free and available to pick up at the box office the day of the event (first come first serve) starting at 5:00.  The doors will open at 6:15-6:30 and the screening will start at 7:00.  You can pick up tickets (limit 4) starting at 5:00 and return when the doors open.  They are expecting a very large crowd to this event and would highly recommend getting tickets at 5:00 if possible.  You can find out more information about the screening at www.nhtpv.org/thewar.

2.  Obama for NH Vets Brief Meeting
We will get together to discuss the progress we have made in recruiting veterans to support Senator Obama.  We have some impressive leaders in the NH veteran's community who are willing to lead our Obama for NH Vets Committee.  As a result, we will be ready to ramp up our activities soon, but I thought it may be nice to meet briefly and provide an update on those activities and the campaign generally.

WHERE: Obama Concord Campaign Office located at 4A Eagle Square
WHEN: 4:00 PM, Thursday, June 28th (we will head over to the Capitol Center for the Arts at 5 PM to pick up tickets)

Please let me know if you are interested in attending either or both of these events - thanks!

Later, we followed up with a conference call with Barack. Again, the film provided the inspiration for our committment.

THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN INVITES YOU TO A SPECIAL SUNDAY EVENING DEDICATED TO VETERANS:
PREVIEW KEN BURNS' NEW FILM, "THE WAR," & JOIN A CONVERSATION WITH SENATOR OBAMA ON VETERAN'S ISSUES

You will see one hour of "The War," a 14-hour series exploring the Second World War that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America - and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives.

Following our preview of "The War," Senator Obama and some of his supporters, Major General Scott Gration (ret.) & General Merrill Anthony "Tony" McPeak (ret.), will discuss veteran's issues with YOU via conference call.

Senator Obama wants your input on veteran's issues as he prepares for his speech to the VFW Convention on August 21st.

First Innaugural (0.00 / 0)
Burns takes language from the address by Lincoln in his First Inaugural wherein the President closes with mystic chords of memory and angels...an appeal to Christianity, Patriotism and Him, all in one sentence. Tonight I'd rather hear about jobs, education, and health care. The Civil War and Hillary's campaign gaffs are of course not one and the same. I do think you need to be hyperbolic when you have no real record of accomplishment. Its all about promise.

"...Intelligence, patriotism, Christianity, and a firm reliance on Him who has never yet forsaken this favored land are still competent to adjust in the best way all our present difficulty.
In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The Government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without being yourselves the aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the Government, while I shall have the most solemn one to "preserve, protect, and defend it." 34
I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

At an address to the New Hampshire Democratic Party's 100 Club in 1998 at ST.Paul's School with Al Gore on the dais as our main attraction, Burns went off a similar track, referring to 'true Christians' as opposed to the rising Christian Right, a noble thought perhaps but ill put in a pluralistic party setting, then completely lost me when he tied that to taking our party back for those Christians values. What's up with that Ken ?

Fair use or over use? (0.00 / 0)
Burns quotes Lincoln quoting the Bible which is a paraphrase of the Torah. The Hebrews owe much to the Egyptians, so when will we learn.

After 3500 years, you would think we could move on.

Don't diss the Summerians Sleepy (0.00 / 0)
I find Burns repetitive and pretentious. His Jazz story was slanted by his use of certain 'authorities'...Wide shots of black and white stills, panning in, with great voice overs...its nice, but I don't buy it all beneath the packaging. He has an agenda, in certifying what our culture is about. Winton didn't do the music any favors. Certain figures got overlooked...

Meanwhile back at the oasis, the Summerians... invented New Math.
That's wut I learned in 7th grade.
They threw out the old books, and got new
ones with a forward about it.

Define accomplishment (4.00 / 1)
I fail to see how one can dismiss Barack's accomplishments in his local communities and on grassroots levels, simply because he hasn't had enough time to impliment his vision on the national scale.
Isn't that what we as Americans should be trying to promote; the sense that good ideas can be spread and built upon until they reach their highest potential?
Others' records of national accomplishments can arguably rival their records of national failures and shortcomings. But I'd rather not focus on that.
Instead I'll mention that I welcome the notion that a candidate and his/her supporters speak the same language. In this case I think it shows that they share the same sentiments for our future as a nation, instead of supporting a candidate for reasons of selfishness or other less admirable reasons.

Obsessed is just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.

Yet is it not fair (0.00 / 0)
...to ask the question; Is someone with a few years in the State Legislature, and two in the Senate, truly prepared for the rigors of the Presidency ? It is not just about vision, its about the fire in the belly. Barack is engaged and cerebral, I don't see the fire, especially in how he backed off from direct confrontation in earlier debates.

The cookie cutter (0.00 / 0)
Not sure why we want to force the Presidency into the cookie cutter that is convenient for Kathy and Hillary.

If I put Strong Tendency to be Confrontational on my resume, I would be a ward of the state. No?

He's just been polite and diplomatic during the debates. Both are qualities we will need in reforming peaceful relationships with other world leaders. Besides, he might want one of then to be his running mate, so why piss on anyone?

How did Lincoln's vision yet limited experience work out for the country?  (dead horse = beaten)
Is it not fair to ask people to have a little faith?

The stakes are global not civil (0.00 / 0)
Rudy sucked at being da Mayor of New York on 9/10/01, and John F. Kennedy was not a great President on 11/22/63. Events transpired and propelled them into history, which may view them both as heroes. Rudy for bravery, Kennedy for his youth and glamor. Neither suffices today as a model for the Obama I would need to see, beyond the dream. I love a bumper sticker I saw once from Feldman's Gun Shop in Philadelphia.

Paul Krugman agrees with you (0.00 / 0)
PK: No, but there aren't any moderates on the other side. And as far as sounding moderate goes, the reality is that if the Democrats nominated Joe Lieberman, a month into the general election Republicans would be portraying him as Josef Stalin. Obama's actually been positioning himself to the right of both Clinton and Edwards on domestic policy and has been attacking them from the right.

The Democratic nominee is still going to be running on a platform that is substantially to the left of how Bill Clinton governed, and the Republican is going to nominate someone to the right of Attila the Hun. You want the Dem who's going to make that difference clear and not say things that will be used by Republicans to say, "Well, even their candidate says..."

To divide and conquer? (0.00 / 0)
If it's the best thing for the country, then it'd be good to have the Reps agree.
Lets not focus on how Dems should separate themselves from those who dissagree. That's what the Reps do.
There are plenty of things that can be done/used to stand out besides taking polarizing views.
The country needs a president that can lead more than 51% of the people.

As someone who actually experienced WWII (0.00 / 0)
and its aftermath on the ground, I've always found the American glorification of war distressing.  Ken Burns' fictional renderings don't seem to have the effect one might hope for.  That is, Americans aren't less warlike after viewing the harrowing experience of others than they were before.

I suspect the problem lies in our mistaken assumption that we learn from the negative experience of others and won't repeat their mistakes.  That we do make the same mistakes seems to be a consequence of the rationalization that "we can do it better," overlooking the fact that the better of bad is actually worse.  So, every war in the 20th Century was worse for those who fought and those who survived and the aggression on Iraq in the 21 st Century is worst of all because the more modern weapons are deadly long after they've been launched and expended.

The effort to redefine, with Ken Burns help, the aggression on Iraq as a war for oil is really distressing because it's a lie.

Another mistake we often make is to assume that a person's membership in a particular group that's experienced suffering and distress will be more sensitive to the suffering of others and not be the cause of it.  There is no historical basis for this assumption, perhaps because those who survive the abuse persuade themselves that, if they could take it, others should be able to take it, as well--that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."  Not to mention that the abused seem inclined to take it out on someone else.
The example of Clarence Thomas and Colin Powell should be instructive.
