Concord Monitor Serves Anti-Endorsement to "Phony" Romney

by: Dean Barker

Sat Dec 22, 2007 at 22:09:37 PM EST

Now this is kind of interesting.  Right after reading in the Union Leader that Mitt considers Iowa and New Hampshire must win states in order to capture the White House, I see that the Concord Monitor has taken the unusual step of issuing an anti-endorsement of him:
In the 2008 campaign for president, there are numerous issues on which Romney has no record, and so voters must take him at his word. On these issues, those words are often chilling. While other candidates of both parties speak of restoring America's moral leadership in the world, Romney has said he'd like to "double" the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, where inmates have been held for years without formal charge or access to the courts. He dodges the issue of torture - unable to say, simply, that waterboarding is torture and America won't do it.

When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state's first-in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we'll know it.

Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no.

And the Great NH GOP Primary Crack-Up continues unabated.  I'm telling you, we're going to be looking at a four-way car crash tie for first by primary day (and Rudy! will still come in second to all of 'em).

Romney can count on one Granite Stater, at least:

"The one endorsement I'm most proud of is Sen. Judd Gregg. I'll take Sen. Gregg and his organization and his followers any day," Romney said.
Yes, Mitt.  Take him. Far away. Please.

Can't wait to hear how he handles Laura Knoy... or how she handles him. She definitely reads the Monitor, so I expect the question of this anti-endorsement will come up.  If not, expect someone to call or email with it... (Can't guarantee I'll get to it this time, Andrew's home from school, so I'm sure I'll be running interference somewhere in my house).

I do hope that someone will point this out though:

The nstional reporters are all talking about the Monitor's editorial. I ran into several of them tonight and they are all abuzz.

Have you written a letter to the editor today? Have you donated today? Have you put up signs? Have you made calls? Have you talked to your neighbors?

Anti-Endorsement (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone remember a previous anti-endorsement of a front runner?

I'm very curious about that myself (0.00 / 0)

The church and state question. (0.00 / 0)
While I'm inclined to agree that the Constitutional intent is to restrict secular government from interfering with the establishment of religion, if only because religions aim to control what people think and we want government to be responsive to people and not controlling, I also agree that there's no reverse prohibition against religious entities trying to influence government.

However, the established western religions with which we are most familiar are characteristically autocratic or hierarchical and thus in conflict with democratic government, where authority flows from the bottom up, rather than from the top down.  Which suggests that the extent to which a candidate for public office is committed to top/down organization is  important for voters to consider when making a selection. (It's my understanding that the Mormon Church is very hierarchical.  Of course, so is the Catholic Church, but the membership has been working on that.)

And then there's the matter of secrecy.  Some established religions are very dependent on a climate of secrecy to maintain hierarchical control, others less so.  Secrecy is inimical to democratic government, which needs to be open to public scrutiny at all times.  Since it isn't practical for the public to be constantly participating, we not only have to be able to trust our representatives, but their representations have to be verifiable and verified.

Reagan got that right.  "Trust but verify."

After reading that article, I have only one question. (4.00 / 1)
Will the Monitor deliver to my house in Manchester?
