The Telegraph endorses Obama

by: Andy Edwards

Sun Dec 23, 2007 at 02:55:27 AM EST

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

I was wrong, the Nashua Telegraph has endorsed Obama:
Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is the best choice for Democrats in the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8. He is the candidate with the greatest chance of reaching across the aisle - of resonating with moderate and independent voters needed to capture the general election - while maintaining the core principles of his party.

And he best represents what Democrats are looking for this year: a change from the status quo, a genuine and authentic voice for hope and healing during difficult and divisive times.

In weeks past, I was wary of a pro-Hillary slant in their primary coverage.  However, following an editorial questioning Hillary's leadership this week citing "dirty tactics" being used by her campaign and surrogates, it looked as though my fears might be proven wrong - and they were.

Obama's interview with the Telegraph editorial board can be viewed here

He is consistent in this message (0.00 / 0)
Barack Obama has not changed his message from day one.  From the beginning of this campaign, he has been the candidate of hope, change, healing, and authenticity.  He has not changed his message or his campaign slogans in reaction to polls or the success of other candidates message.  When people look at Barack, they read his 2 books, and then listen to him on the stump, they hear the same message.  It's constant.

I know that State Senator Barack Obama, Community Organizer Barack Obama, US Senator Barack Obama, Father and Husband Barack Obama, and President Barack Obama are all the same person.

It is nice to see when what you know all along gets validated by others.

OK, so when did consistency become a virtue? (0.00 / 0)
I know the press likes it.  Makes it easier to write reports without actually paying attention to an event, or even attending.  I know the admen like it.  Makes it easier to come up with promotions.
But why is it good for democracy?

What's the difference between a story teller and a drinking buddy?

Consistency often means,,, (0.00 / 0)
that you have the insight and judgment to lead and the propensity to tell the truth.

If you are poll-driven and willing to do anything for the sake of power you tend to move around a great deal.

We need a president who will look at the facts, listen to the arguments (even if you don't agree them) and then use your good judgment to come to a the best policy decision.

It seems we haven't had this in a very very long time.

When flip-flopping and theme stealing become the norm (0.00 / 0)
then consistency becomes a virtue.
Listen, I'm not saying Obama's never changed his mind, never rethought a position--- he's open to it.  Admits in Audacity of Hope that he might be proved wrong later on with some positions he taking... and he accepts that and will embrace it.

It's not only good for democracy, it's GREAT for democracy because it lets you know that you have a leader that is driven by his or her principles, life-shaping experiences, and doesn't change his or her tone or values by sticking a finger to the wind.

Really?? (0.00 / 0)
Any candidate can campaign on hope and change - Obama took the easy route - with very few specifics.
John Edwards has consistently provided comprehensive plans and solutions to move our country forward!

It's very consistents (0.00 / 0)
The more time people spend getting to know Senator Obama, the more they support him. That's been the pattern of this entire campaign. It's a strategy that takes time to work because it doesn't rely on name recognition or TV ads, but on delivering a complete message to individuals on a small scale: grass roots campaigning as it was meant to be.

And let me give Mike H.'s newspaper collection diary (4.00 / 1)
a promotion here.

Archives: 2008 NH Primary Newspaper Endorsements

Yes, setting up a Wiki would be a good idea, though perhaps a bit late for the primary this time.  Perhaps a plan post 1/8?

I'll also say that I'm lousy at predicting print endorsements - I had the Sentinel and Telegraph reversed in my personal predictions.

I think we could do a lot of backfilling after the Primary on the events of 2008. It could be a interesting project, the mortar tying many online resources together.

Updated the Archives Post, does anybody know if the UL officially endorsed Obama? Does the Valley News have a R pick?

Clinton defeats Hillary (4.00 / 2)
I have read many posts regarding Hillary's qualities. Rep. Splaine's and gradysdad's are the best, imo.

Hillary has made a point to ask us to look "back to the future", casting a rose colored spotlight on the spotty past of her partner's White House tenure. The 1990's are past, bygones.

If we move along to Sen, Clinton's days on Capitol Hill, Hillary fares better. However, Senators Dodd and Biden have legislative records that, frankly, crush Sen. Clinton's. Factor in the vote for war and K-L and Hillary is on shaky ground.

Once Hillary committed to running for President, she recruited Mark Penn, et al. These "dogs of war" are better suited to crash Hillary through the mudslinging and hate mongering that will befall her (and our Party) in the general election. Such operatives are a catastrophic blunder on a bid for the party nomination, where Dems value substance over slander. It was in her fatally flawed choice to run her campaign this way, that Hillary was lost and what is left is all Clinton.

As the Telegraph article demonstrates, Clinton does not provide clear coherent leadership over her bid for the Oval Office. It is said that "candidates will govern in the manner in which they run".  I have no use for an executive that continually finds "plausible deniability" for the gaffes, errors and smears that are executed by subordinates in their name.

Dirty tactics raise questions for Clinton

Background: The Clinton campaign has been the target of criticism recently for unauthorized attacks by staffers on Barack Obama.
Conclusion: Although not official actions of the Clinton campaign, these sleazy tactics raise questions about her leadership.

Part of being a strong leader is holding people accountable when they make mistakes. But an even more important aspect of leadership is bringing people in who won't mess up in the first place.

That's what makes the recent spate of unauthorized slams and other shenanigans against Democratic presidential hopeful, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama emanating from New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's camp so troubling.
-snip

Sure, a cynic may see this spate of incidents as straight from Karl Rove's big book of political dirty tricks. However, we're willing to give Clinton the benefit of the doubt that these were unauthorized acts by overzealous staffers or volunteers.

However, it still comes back to leadership. For someone who as recently as late November said she was "not interested in attacking my opponents," the fact that the folks working on her campaign still felt the need to pass this garbage along does not bode well for her organization.

It's troubling that a campaign with a reputation for message discipline, which is pushing Clinton's experience to lead from day one as a major selling point, is finding itself in the mire, just as polls are beginning to tighten.

Please (0.00 / 0)
Let us try to maintain a little perspective here. The "unauthorized attacks by staffers" was Clinton staffers registering without permission on Blue Hampshire simply to recommend my pro Hillary diary "Winning the Policy Debate - Clinton over Obama" so that it would qualify for the Recommend Diaries.

While that certainly was wrong to do and I hope that it does not happen again, IMHO,I don't think that it rises to the level you are trying to make it out to be nor what the Telegraph has made it out to be.

Panic Mode (0.00 / 0)
G.,
First the Telegraph pointed out a litany of "boo-boos" by Team Clinton.
To recap:

Bill Shaheen, Clinton's New Hampshire co-chairman and longtime Democratic kingmaker, stepped down last week after telling the Washington Post that Republicans might ask Obama whether he ever dealt or distributed drugs. Obama has admitted in his autobiography and on the campaign trail to using alcohol, marijuana and cocaine in high school. (A far more candid admission than the last two presidents - Bill Clinton, who "didn't inhale," and George W. Bush, he of the "reckless youth.")

Clinton personally apologized to Obama, and Shaheen packed his bags, but the issue - which was never a secret - was back in the headlines as the campaign tightened. In fact, taking a much more subtle tack but germinating the seed that Shaheen planted, Clinton told Iowa voters Friday that she alone among her main rivals can't be hurt by damaging secrets coming out in the general election. Without naming names, Clinton said "Republicans will go after whomever we nominate - I think every single one of you know that."

The Washington Post reported last week that four posters with undisclosed ties to the Clinton campaign created new accounts on blue hamsphire.com, the best-known liberal blog in New Hampshire, to add pro-Clinton postings - a big no-no in the blogosphere. Her New Hampshire campaign said it was "not an orchestrated effort but the product of over-eager staffers and volunteers.

In Iowa two weeks ago, two volunteer coordinators resigned after it came out that they forwarded e-mails that falsely claimed Obama was a Muslim and tried to tie him to Islamic jihadists. (Obama has been a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago for almost 20 years.)

Second, regarding your post.

Lets fill in the gaps of the coverage, so far.

You posted your diary Winning the Policy Debate - Clinton over Obama  on Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 08:59:13 AM EST  on the heels of some embarrassing FPs by
Mike Caulfield (Hillary Accuses Someone Rhyming with Show-bama Of Push Polling and Voter Supression Techniques)
and
Dean Barker (Life Imitates Snark)

Understandibly you wanted to come out strong, so you played your best hand, not a better hand, just the best you could muster. For that I give you a thumbs up, BUT you had to throw in

Take a break and just forget those petty character assassinations of your least favorite candidate.

And to boot, Kathy had to chime in on the first post with,

When you put away the background noise and look at the policies and the experience,

Well, lets just say I took offense to both of your flippant attitudes to the humble pie you were handed by Dean and Mike. I blogged:

By background noise, did you mean...(0.00 / 0)

the sycophantic stream of numbimg platitudes or the Machiavellian subversion of honest discourse by the Clinton campaign's consultants and political operatives.
You're right, that does make it harder to honestly judge the merits of the various candidates. If Hillary Clinton truly believed in the strength of her leadership, or, more importantly, trusted the American people to differentiate the pros and cons of the different visions offered by the candidates; she wouldn't feel compelled to turn the primary into an episode of "Real World '08: Washington, DC."

Then your exceptionally detailed diary, vaulted to the Rec list at light speed. I checked you rec list:

Wow! Talk about piling on. (0.00 / 0)

You guys must have planned this.

G.,
I know you understand the importance of politcs at all levels, but especially the election of our President and this election. I laud you, personally for your approach here on this forum.

However, your peer group, from top to bottom, is fundamentally challenged. I dare say from Clinton to Calvin, you all are your own worst enemies. Did you not think that your endeavor would be met with the most fierce promotion and defense of worthy candidates? Did you buy into the "inevitability" kool aid that was going around?

You better hit the Lao Tzu, man. This thing is in the home stretch and Team Clinton is still working on Day 1 shit.

Obama is running strong. (4.00 / 1)
The endorsements and foot soldiers he has is amazing.
He has pulled a lot of Republican and Independent support according to the polls.
(See Tim Russert Meet the Press 12/23)
I guess Obama  and  Huckabee will be interviewed next week.
Should be Good! Maybe an early debate prior to the general election. Go Big O in 08!

If we don't do it who will?
