| To my surprise, the leading three candidates have responded within twenty-four hours to the absurdity that Biden, Dodd, and Kucinich may be cast out of the New Hampshire St. Anselm debate just days before our primary, in part due to how Iowans caucus.
Barack Obama: "The voters of New Hampshire deserve to hear all the Democratic candidates' views on who can best lead America in a fundamentally new direction, and that's why I urge these networks to allow full participation in this week's debate."
Hillary Clinton: "I welcome the opportunity to have a substantive debate with my fellow Democratic candidates over the issues that are most important to the American people. I believe in the true spirit of the New Hampshire process, the candidates who have participated in past debates should not be excluded from this one."
John Edwards: "I'm staying out of that. I don't get to set the rules for the debates. I'll let the people who are in charge of the debates set the rules. And I'll be there."
So much for a united front - had there been a trifecta I imagine we'd see some movement, but Edwards has left ABC the wiggle room it needs to keep out two sitting Senators and a Congressman with in-state campaign offices, delegates, steering committees, etc...
I can give Richardson a pass on this for being mum, since the chance to be up there alone with the "top tier" (how I loathe that term) is a once in a lifetime opportunity for his campaign, especially if he exceeds expectations in Iowa.
But for a guy who openly rails against the corporate media and whose supporters have top rated diaries on dKos such as "MSM Continues Blackout of John Edwards," it's pretty ironic. Scratch that; I shouldn't hide behind niceties - it's hypocritical. And it dishonors the eloquent support for him witnessed daily by me on this site from so many fine minds. |
