St. A's Democratic Debate Liveblog

by: Dean Barker

Sat Jan 05, 2008 at 20:55:55 PM EST

Here we go folks.  After that horror show, I am so looking forward to our team.

Webstream link available here from WMUR.

ABC made all the candidates shake hands in-between the two debates.  Unity '08!  And where was Bloomberg?

Photo: a view from the press room.

P.S. Did anyone notice that Romney just got pwned? And did you hear that even before the debate Judd "Iowa picks corn" Gregg is lowering expectations for Willard in NH? How Steve Forbes of him.

P.P.S. The WiFi is still erratic, so apologies if I can't comment as often as I'd like.

What wat the justification, again (0.00 / 0)
for not having Kucinich?

They set out 3 criteria (4.00 / 1)
Meet any of them and you're in.

1. 5% or better in a national poll
2. 5% or better in an NH poll
3. 4th or better in Iowa delegates

[ Parent ]
There is no justification. (0.00 / 0)
Though I will say that while the MSM should never limit established candidates, Kucinich's showing in Iowa was even worse than Biden's and Dodd's, so I'm surprised he hasn't bowed out of his own accord.

birch, finch, beech

[ Parent ]
Don't try to learn ANYTHING from Iowa (0.00 / 0)
lower ballot contests here.

It is just too arcane.

[ Parent ]
Kucinich... (4.00 / 1)
Dennis Kucinich speaks to my heart on a lot of issues.  He should have been included.  Sad.  We have to make sure that kind of control of debates doesn't occur in 2012.  The dislogue of the New Hampshire Primary shouldn't be even more controlled by the media.

Amen on Kucinich (0.00 / 0)
I'm a Kucinich supporter who has just decided to switch to Obama.

I still believe Kucinich's platform is most like my concerns, but I now think that Obama is the kind of President who will understand the importance of that platform.

And finally, maybe it's cheezy, but I'm ready to make history - it's time for a Black American to be president, I'm done with the white aristocrats.

OMG (0.00 / 0)
What's with the kindergarten height school desks?

Do they have to raise their hand and ask to speak?

And... (0.00 / 0)
the ABC News reports?

Aren't we here to watch the candidates?

[ Parent ]
I thought they looked (4.00 / 1)
like they were on Jeopardy.

[ Parent ]
Hoarse (0.00 / 0)
Obama is a little hoarse. Will that make him sound vulnerable or Presidential?

They all look so TIRED (4.00 / 2)
I want to apologize for what we put them through...

They do, (0.00 / 0)
they look awful.  Richardson even looks nervous.

~~
I'm an Obama/Edwards/Kucinich/Gravel Democrat.  1968-2008: Hoping this year is different.

[ Parent ]
WHY (0.00 / 0)
Are they doing this at 9pm on a Saturday Night?

[ Parent ]
Sleepy Candidates! (0.00 / 0)
I'm genuinely concerned for Hillary's health.  I wish the best to her and her family - she appears to need rest so badly. And that was so sweet how Chelsea looks concerned.

And Obama's voice is a little crackled.

~~
I'm an Obama/Edwards/Kucinich/Gravel Democrat.  1968-2008: Hoping this year is different.

[ Parent ]
Fam (0.00 / 0)
Digging the family reaction shots! None of them look that happy.

I like Clinton's (0.00 / 0)
Pakistan answer. Obama came off a lot more clearly this time too. Edwards gave the "best" response, but the least detailed.

Format (4.00 / 1)
I am amused by this format. It allows for candidates to try to one-up each other. Charlie Gibson is even getting in on the act. Earnest Goes to the Debate!

PS. Who will be the first candidate to reject Chuck's premise of fear and destruction now that Kucinich is out?

[ Parent ]
Yeah - (0.00 / 0)

where's the hope and change?  Do they have numbers about NH being obsessed with war or something?

[ Parent ]
"safe-haven" to stateless terrorists? (0.00 / 0)
Would we bomb the Munich cell because the Germans failed to pick them up?

Bill Richardson's going to negotiate (0.00 / 0)
with the Soviet Union???

Didn't he say (0.00 / 0)
He has negotiated /w the solviet union?

Back in the day... as clinton's guy, ect...

[ Parent ]
The Soviet Union (0.00 / 0)
was gone then too, but I thought he said he would, to talk about loose nukes, etc. -- I think he meant "former Soviet Union"

[ Parent ]
Hillary (0.00 / 0)
Trying to gloss over the differences between her and her opponents since 2006.

Clinton (0.00 / 0)
Sounds like a Republican.

Clinton: (0.00 / 0)
"We are all advocating for change"

We are "famously independent."

We're "looking for a President that we can count on," after calling out inconsistencies in Obama's record.

Obama responds by saying the AP quotes are from Team Clinton.

birch, finch, beech

she loves to talk in absolutes, eh? (0.00 / 0)
a la... no one predicted that we would do this well in Iowa

It's time we steer by the stars, and not the lights of every passing ship

[ Parent ]
It's more fun (4.00 / 1)
when they talk with each other.

Clinton going hard on the flip-flop approach. (0.00 / 0)
Did Obama just look at his watch?

Wasn't that one of Bush I's debate undoings?

birch, finch, beech

Nice (0.00 / 0)
I like how nice Obama is. It is part of his charm. But every now and then I wish he would pull a Bob Dole on smarmy Hillary. "Stop lying about my record!"

The Democrats are so much more gracious (0.00 / 0)
and polite than the Republicans were in there debate. Everyone waits for everyone else to finish speaking. No one's really ganging up on anyone. It's almost a cultural difference.

Edwards: (0.00 / 0)
Hillary is the Force for Status Quo.

He just went and said that Obama would be ok, but PLEASE just vote for Clinton.

Hillary Wins One... (4.00 / 1)
Hillary wins one on health care -- and her plan DOES cover everyone, and Obama's does not.  Where is the commitment of Obama for health care for everyone?   Making it "affordable" can still keep a lot of us out of the mix.  Then do we just turn to welfare?

Richardson crakes a joke. (0.00 / 0)
Good for him.

and then... (0.00 / 0)
He reads his Resume

[ Parent ]
It was pretty funny (4.00 / 1)
after Clinton flipped out about experience.

[ Parent ]
All I got out of that exchange... (0.00 / 0)
was that Edwards struck a nerve.

Clinton looks angry, and defensive.

"Hey, you Changey Mc Changers... get off my Democratic Party!!"

[ Parent ]
Edwards: change vs. status quo (4.00 / 1)
He helps himself by joining w/ Obama, and it isolates Clinton.

And Edwards digs deep on the third place finish.

Clinton responded well, though the volume started to rise.

birch, finch, beech

Way to Go, Richardson (4.00 / 1)
"I've been in hostage negotiations more civil than this."

First joke of the night!

P.S. 35 yrs of experience for Hill? Being married doesn't count!

Edwards concedes (0.00 / 0)
there are good corporations...

He's added this clarification recently (0.00 / 0)
He pointed out today in Lebanon that he's not fighting against every business or corporation, only the ones who are having tax laws written for them, being awarded no-bid government contracts, or writing clean air legislation meant to regulate them.

When he says that leaving in troops to protect the embassy means you don't want to get the troops out, he is not helping the Dem part or the cause to end the war.

actually (0.00 / 0)
troops to protect the embassy, is different than the Senators plans.  He will not continue combat missions with them, he will not leave them caught in the middle of the civil war.

Two earth moving things: (0.00 / 0)
Clinton attacking and Edwards/Obama appearing as a ticket.

Clinton saying that voting for Obama/Edwards (change & hope) is the same as voting for Bush because you want to have a beer with him.

I wonder if she'll get anything from comparing Obama to Bush when she was the one who voted for the war in Iraq?

Unfortunate Slight... (0.00 / 0)
It does Hillary Clinton no good, and hurts the process of democracy, when she attacks one of Barack Obama's supporters -- saying that one of his New Hampshire Chairs is a lobbyist.  So what?  Lobbyists are just making a living, and have a right to be involved in their government.  And in the case of the person singled out, he's a good guy with great integrity.

The logical end to singling out supporters of candidates is to single us all out -- "guilt by association" -- and that means fewer people will dare speak out for candidates of their choice if they're going to be blasted or insulted for doing so.  Hoping it's not repeated again, I'd sum it up to the heat of the moment and that she's a bit tired at 10:16 PM on a Saturday night.

How much does he think professors make? (4.00 / 1)
