Kucinich reaffirms support of NH Primary

by: Mike Caulfield

Sat Feb 03, 2007 at 16:27:54 PM EST

Campaigning in Keene today, Kucinich reaffirmed his belief in the New Hampshire Primary today, stating that New Hampshire had led the way in the 2006 elections in opposing the Iraq war, and he felt that the strong anti-war sentiment in the state made New Hampshire a good proving ground for 2008 candidates.

He also said that one can't be against the war but for funding it, and warned that approving more money for the Iraq war would also fund a future war against Iran.

Explaining why he could support a single payer health care plan whereas others could not, he jumped up on a chair, put his arms straight out, and and slowly turned around.

"See," he said. "No Strings." He went on to say we cannot get true health care reform by sending people to Washington funded by insurance lobbies.

Of interest to people here, he said he'd talked to Paul Hodes, and found him a "solid" guy who will do great things on Waxman's committee.

I'll write more later, but you can comment now...

I have to ask:

Is Dennis:

a) levitating, ala David Blane?

b) doing the "hustle"?

c) showing the crowd that he can be taller than his wife?

d) readying the crowd for his all-time best comment from the 2004 debates: "if you vote for me, then I'm electable!"?

e) actually throwing string into the audience?

On a serious note, I think it's really interesting that Kucinich would single out the primary for praise, since that's the standard boiler plate you expect from every candidate coming here.  Yet Kucinich is not exactly one to pander to the crowd with status quo statements, so hearing it from him means a little bit more for me.  Of course, on the other hand, it's our primary which makes lower tier candidates viable, so it may just be an expression of that, as Dodd did as well.

I meant to go to that. (0.00 / 0)
I actually really wanted to.  But, well, I'd have had to get up at like 9:30 to shovel my driveway, and that wasn't happening.

I hope he comes back soon, and to someplace within, say, half an hour of Hanover.

Great photos, Ben! n/t (0.00 / 0)
Please consider writing a diary here on your impressions of the event.

As I said to Ben above, if you had an impression of the event that merits noting down, we'd love to see it in a diary here.

You don't happen to have a clip on (0.00 / 0)
The funding of the war, do you? I thought his talk about how meaningless it was to be a legislator against the war but for funding it was one of the more concise presentations I've seen on that.

It's not a hard concept, but he said it simply, and not in an accusing way, more in a let's get behind the American people on this way.

And although wonkish, I really enjoyed his explanation of why single payer is the system this country desperately needs.

His candidacy aside, if he continues to use what exposure he has to educate the elctorate on these two issues, he will have done a very important thing.

is a video of Kucinich from our very own Cheshire TV- maybe you can extract it from that?

I agree Mike, that DK's strongest points were on health isurance and war funding- and his presence will help to not let those fall away.
