No We Can't (John McCain video)

by: Douglas E. Lindner

Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 17:14:19 PM EST

(The video is hilarious, and it gets McCain's candidacy dead to rights - promoted by Laura Clawson)

I'm not sure if this has been posted in the comments somewhere, but Ray sent an email asking that this be posted (apparently embedding YouTube videos is not among his many talents), and he's right, everyone should take a moment to watch it.  This is what's at stake in November:

Update: The original pro-Obama video this one spoofs, after the jump.

Douglas E. Lindner :: No We Can't (John McCain video)
Update: Below is the original pro-Obama video which the above is a take-off on.  Regardless of which candidate you support, this is an exceptional work of art, and though it is candidate-specific, I think all progressives (and the vast majority of Americans) will be able to connect with the message.  If you've not yet seen it, please click play below.

Please note, the video above is a spoof of a pro-Obama video made by Back Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am.

The video was inspired by the words Barack gave after losing the NH primary to Sen. Clinton.

Here is an excerpt:
Yes, we can

It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation: Yes, we can.

It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail towards freedom through the darkest of nights: Yes, we can.

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness: Yes, we can.

It was the call of workers who organized, women who reached for the ballot, a president who chose the moon as our new frontier, and a king who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the promised land: Yes, we can, to justice and equality.

Yes, we can, to opportunity and prosperity. Yes, we can heal this nation. Yes, we can repair this world. Yes, we can.

Watch the original first (0.00 / 0)
If you haven't seen either, watch the original first. It will make the parody that much funnier.

Funnier in that "Holy crap, this guy might be president" way.

The entire lyrics to "Yes We Can" are, well, lyrical. (0.00 / 0)

It is especially telling to recall that this paean to Hope was
delivered with such force and conviction on the most difficult night of the campaign, when artificially high expectations were dashed by the reality of a narrow defeat in New Hampshire.

It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.

Yes we can.

It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.

Yes we can.

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.

Yes we can.

It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.

Yes we can to justice and equality.

Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.

Yes we can heal this nation.

Yes we can repair this world.

Yes we can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics...they will only grow louder and more dissonant ........... We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea --

Yes. We. Can.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

And we were there to hear it... (4.00 / 1)
After feeling so disappointed, I never knew that I could feel so hopeful... Here was this man who should have been down, but he was not.. he was instead telling us that this was just the beginning, and that if we continued to stand together, that we can change the world.

I've never got teary at a political event before, but this speech, that night, moved me.

Yes We Can!

Feeling hopeful since 2004...now "Secretary" of the New Boston Democratic Caucus

I do think the New Hampshire speech was among the best Obama speeches I've heard. (4.00 / 1)
And I've watched all the major ones.
