Powerless: New Ranking Shows Sununu is 89th on List of Most Powerful Senators

by: Bill Lofy

(Was planning to post on this tonight, but the press release pretty much says it all. - promoted by Dean Barker)

(Manchester, NH) - Congress.org today released its power rankings report on members of the U.S. Congress. Senator John E. Sununu ranks 89th out of 100 senators. He is the least powerful senator from New England.

Click here to read the report

"Today's power rankings confirm what New Hampshire voters already know: John E. Sununu has wasted the past six years he's been in the Senate," said Bill Lofy, director of the Stop Sununu campaign of the New Hampshire Democratic Party. "He is one of the weakest members of the Senate. Of his 99 colleagues, only 11 senators are less powerful than Sununu. As Sununu fails to make an impact in the Senate, New Hampshire families pay the price. We need a senator who knows how to get things done, understands the issues facing our state, and will deliver results. John E. Sununu had his chance to make a difference in the Senate, and he's been nothing more than a rubber stamp for President Bush and his special interest friends."

Damn you, NHDP! What with your timely responses and your accurate representation of constituents' sentiments, you people make me sick!

Bill Lofy at Stop Sununu is great. (4.00 / 2)
He does incredible research over there.

My point had more to do with meta - I saw the release yesterday and was going to post about it and add some thoughts of my own.  I'm not keen on posting uncut press releases with no commentary on the front page, but this is a good exception.

We're Number 89! We're Number 89! (0.00 / 0)
I fully expect Fergus and the boys to come out with giant foam rubber 89s Sununu suporters - there must be some - can wave proudly at campaign events.

Not surprisingly, Harry Reid ranks #1 in the Senate while Nancy Pelosi has the top spot in the House. Ted Kennedy is #2 and only Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (#7) and Sen. McCain (#10)represent the GOP in the top 10.

Sen. Clinton is #9, Sen. Obama, #11.

The Senate anchor man is - hoorah! - Sen. Barasso of Wyoming.

On the House side, Paul Hodes is #149 and Carol Shea-Porter is #345

They say the rankings take into account position, indirect influence, legislative activity, earmarks and "the sizzle/fizzle factor."

Bet John E. was off the chart on the sizzle factor.

You can access the criteria, methodology and complete House & Senate power rankings at the Congress.org Web site.

Judd Gregg is 53. (0.00 / 0)
Pretty appalling given his seniority.

He must be real well liked down there in the Swamp.

All that time during the Bush years when the Republicans had a stranglehold on everything, Gregg was Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee (0.00 / 0)
And yet with greater pork-getting potential than perhaps any other member of Congress, Amtrak still won't take me to Manchester.

Foam 89s will be perfect for Sununu's 89 supporters. (0.00 / 0)
I'm proud of Paul Hodes particularly; a freshman that close to the top!  I'm impressed he learned how to write laws fast enough to rank that high, heh.

Dodd at 20, Biden 19. (0.00 / 0)
Our candidates rock.

Fairly impressive too to see Clinton and especially Obama be so high up so quickly.

I'm not surprised to see them high. (0.00 / 0)
They are extremely prominent and get a lot of media coverage, which is easily transferable to political capital.  The media is probably more likely to cover a novel idea if it's the [insert name here]-Clinton or -Obama bill.

The methodology (4.00 / 2)
favors members of the party in power. Which makes sense.

But Sununu ranks low even measured only against other Republicans.

The point of this kind of ranking escapes me. (0.00 / 0)
Does 'power' equate to ability to intimidate?  How is this fixation on power consistent with our commitment to equality?

If 'power' means 'effective,' why not use that term?  'Power' is really an empty concept.  To be effective is to make something actually happen.

Who does what to whom, when and where?  How is it that our impotent Senator manages to get more attention on this site than the putative democratic candidate?
