Hillary Clinton:A Great Democrat Endorses Barack Obama

by: JonnyBBad

Sat Jun 07, 2008 at 14:24:35 PM EDT

(Hampsters played a significant part in Senator Clinton's NH win, without that, this speech would have been made long ago. Kudos to her NH supporters. - promoted by Mike Hoefer)

Today's speech endorsing Barack Obama was not easy, and the quality of it, how gracious and good she looked giving it, this is a wonderful conclusion to a hard fought campaign. Sen. Hillary Clinton is  tough and smart, a Democratic star. Thank you Hillary for making Democrats proud of who we are, all of us. New York is lucky to have you. Thanks for fighting for working families and health care for all Americans. On to November.

Once and Future (4.00 / 1)
I want to say, as a stauch Obama supporter, that although Hillary won't become President in 2008 (and let's all give it our utmost to ensure Obama will) I firmly believe that at some point during the next couple of decades HRC is going to become the President of the United States and I for one expect I will have probably backed her when she does.

We were floored. (4.00 / 2)
I watched the entire speech with my wife. Frequently we would look at each other with a look of awe and often we would affirm that her remark was powerful. This is a speech that both my daughters will be viewing soon.

I pulled out a couple of our favorite parts. We were floored.

This election is a turning point election and it is critical that we all understand what our choice really is. Will we go forward together or will we stall and slip backwards. Think how much progress we have already made. When we first started, people everywhere asked the same questions:

Could a woman really serve as Commander-in-Chief?  Well, I think we answered that one.

And could an African American really be our President?  Senator Obama has answered that one.

Together Senator Obama and I achieved milestones essential to our progress as a nation, part of our perpetual duty to form a more perfect union.

To those who are disappointed that we couldn't go all the way - especially the young people who put so much into this campaign - it would break my heart if, in falling short of my goal, I in any way discouraged any of you from pursuing yours.  Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in.  When you stumble, keep faith.  When you're knocked down, get right back up.  And never listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on.

As we gather here today in this historic magnificent building, the 50th woman to leave this Earth is orbiting overhead.  If we can blast 50 women into space, we will someday launch a woman into the White House.

Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it.  And the light is shining through like never before, filling us all with the hope and the sure knowledge that the path will be a little easier next time. That has always been the history of progress in America.

"Our party and our country are stronger " (0.00 / 0)
Obama on Clinton: "Valiant and historic"

Obama:
Obviously, I am thrilled and honored to have Sen. Clinton's support.

But more than that, I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run. She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans.

Our party and our country are stronger because of the work she has done throughout her life, and I'm a better candidate for having had the privilege of competing with her in this campaign. No one knows better than Sen. Clinton how desperately America and the American people need change, and I know she will continue to be in the forefront of that battle this fall and for years to come.

A Great Speech (4.00 / 2)
Senator Clinton managed to turn a standard concession endorsement speech into a great speech.

My two favorite parts in the speech included the following when she explained in intelligent, rational, thought why she was wholeheartedly supporting Barak Obama for President:

We made tremendous progress during the '90s under a Democratic president, with a flourishing economy and our leadership for peace and security respected around the world.

Just think how much more progress we could have made over the past 40 years if we'd had a Democratic president. Think about the lost opportunities of these past seven years on the environment and the economy, on health care and civil rights, on education, foreign policy and the Supreme Court.

Imagine how far...

(APPLAUSE)

... we could have come, how much we could have achieved if we had just had a Democrat in the White House.

(APPLAUSE)

We cannot let this moment slip away. We have come too far and accomplished too much.

She then listed the specific issues for which she had fought so hard ending each time with "that is why we need to elect Barak Obama."

The second part I loved was at the end of the speech when she said:

So I want to say to my supporters: When you hear people saying or think to yourself, "If only, or, "What if," I say, please, don't go there. Every moment wasted looking back keeps us from moving forward.

(APPLAUSE)

Life is too short, time is too precious, and the stakes are too high to dwell on what might have been. We have to work together for what still can be. And that is why I will work my heart out to make sure that Senator Obama is our next president.

(APPLAUSE)

And I hope and pray that all of you will join me in that effort.

(APPLAUSE)

I understand what Senator Clinton wants her supporters to do for the November election, but I think I will take a day or two to think about in great sadness "what might have been" despite her strong suggestion to the contrary.

Looking forward to working with you (4.00 / 1)

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. (4.00 / 3)
The army we are amassing against McCain and all of the rest of Bush's enablers (you too, Sununu) just grew exponentially.

2006 was just the turning of the tide.  A re-aligning wave is picking up speed, and bearing down to crash on the shore in November.

And thank you Senator Clinton.  She faced what I feel is a very analogous situation to what Howard Dean did in Wisconsin in 2004, though with a great many more supporters, and she, as he did, just took a forceful base of support and focused it into winning in November for the Democrats.

We will win (4.00 / 4)
I listened to Hillary's historic speech on the radio while riding in a car between Lafayette and Shrevesport, Louisiana. I was with the vice chair of the La. state party and the driver was a local party leader, both were Hillary supporters. Not only did her speech stir their emotions, it motivated them to talk for an hour after about how hard they were going to work for Barack. It was an amazing car ride. What an amazing journey America is on. I am so grateful to be alive during this historic time.

Have you written a letter to the editor today? Have you donated today? Have you put up signs? Have you made calls? Have you talked to your neighbors?
