Dodd on FISA: "How will We be Judged?"

by: Dean Barker

Wed Jun 25, 2008 at 13:30:29 PM EDT

Part of Dodd's speech last night on FISA.  Full text here:

Update: Looks like the fight to strip the executive branch of excessive power will not be joined by the likely next executive. That, in and of itself, is a major disappointment.  But the spin is even worse than that:

My view on FISA has always been that the issue of the phone companies per se is not one that overrides the security interests of the American people."
Quite the contrary, Senator Obama. When you frame it that way, the principles upon which our nation was built become a little less secure.

Great! (4.00 / 1)
"The rule of law, or the rule of men." Powerful stuff.

CSP said the same thing on Sunday. (0.00 / 0)
Dodd has earned Reid's job in this.

For the time being, though, are the votes there to uphold the filibuster?

I just want to stress (4.00 / 2)
People always say this -- that hey what a great senate leader he'd make.

I think it does a disservice to Dodd.

Because it's precisely by doing this that he has killed any chance of him taking Reid's job. He might have had a chance before he did this. He sacrificed having that position by taking a stand.

He was supposed to be doing a victory lap. 4 years ago, he was one of the most liked guys in the Senate. There WAS talk then about him becoming President of the Senate.

No longer. Now he's the skunk at the party, and couldn't get elected Senate dogcatcher. He's burned his bridges, and his victory lap consists of rolling a big rock up a long hill, mostly alone.

So when you see things like this instead of saying he's earned Reid's job, respect the sacrifice he's made here, and say he's permanently fucked himself out of Reid's job by doing this.

I don't buy that (0.00 / 0)
I completely agree that it's a courageous stand, and he should be praised for it. But the skunk at the party? I doubt it.

Sorry, I was unclear above. (0.00 / 0)
CSP used the "rule of law or rule of men" quote, not that Dodd had earned Reid's job--I'm saying that.

But Mike, do you mean there was talk of him becoming Senate Majority Leader, President Pro Tempore, or Vice President?

are the reason Obama was not my first, second, third or even fourth choice. I'll vote for him but now I think I may have to hold my nose. Jeez!
