Fired Up and Ready To Go (to Denver)

by: Mike Hoefer

Tue Jul 29, 2008 at 00:34:14 AM EDT

The Delegates, Volunteers, and others who are traveling to Denver got together last week to meet one another and begin to prepare for the week in Denver.

Chairman Buckley was kind enough to invite me along so I could begin to meet people, and they could begin to become comfortable with the concept of a Blogger in their midst. More on this in a later diary, but I can certainly understand being uncomfortable, I have experienced that feeling for a few months now.

You see, it has taken me that long to feel confident in telling friends and family that I was going to be traveling to Denver to be seated with the NH Delegation in order to "blog" about the experience. The magnitude of the event, and my participation in it so unlikely, that part of me did not want to talk about it too much, I was sure that someone would soon wake me up and I would realize it was all a dream.

Driving home through the rain and fog on Rt. 101 the reality began to sink in. I will be in Denver with the people who will nominate Barack Obama to be the Democratic Nominee for President of the United States of America. I'm not ashamed to share that the emotional effects of this realization made the road even more difficult to see.

It was then I decided to dedicate my efforts for the week to those who have been a part of my path to this moment:

  • Caulfield, Barker, and Clawson. Without the community you have enabled here this never would have happened. If there were justice in the world you all would be going. Thanks for trusting me to be part of the crew.
  • The 2004 Cheshire Co. Dean Team. They say you always remember your first... campaign. In many ways I see Obama08 as an extension of the work we began in 2003. This blog's for you.
  • Grady's Dad: Although we picked different horses I always knew we were on the same side. Again, if the world was fair you would be attending this event too.
  • Kelly N, and Sleeping Giant. You guys wore out your shoes/cell phone minutes for Obama. Your stories and comments here on BlueHampshire helped tell the world about the grassroots politics that is the NH Primary. Blog On!
  • My Parents: As they drove to the hospital for my arrival they were detoured around National Guard barricades set up in the aftermath of The Glendale Shootings. 40 years later I will bear (and share) witness to the nomination of an African American to our highest office. We've come a long way baby.
  • My Wife: For supporting me once again as I leave my family for yet another political thing. I know you know it is more than a political thing.
  • My Kids:I hope in some small way my efforts will enable you to experience a Democrat in the White House for (essentially) the first time in your lives.

I will get in to some more specific plans and explain what I see my role to be in my next post. But wanted this "First" post to be about my motivation and where I was coming from as I approach the week.

Added by Dean: If you like what you are reading on Blue Hampshire, please consider making a secure contribution to our first ever Blograiser to help send Mike and Laura to the DNC convention.  Look for the yellow "Donate" button just below our logo.

As a convention vet... (4.00 / 1)
This diary was great - for all the hoopla, the speeches, the parties, the real business of the convention is nominating two people to carry the Democratic banner in November, two individuals whom we entrust with our faith, hope and dreams.  Your diary reminded me of that!

Our improbable quest (4.00 / 1)
Mike,
I would venture to say that your feelings about all of this are, at the root, what most of us feel. It is our natural response to the unknown. These feelings come through the process of discovery and are a gift.

When Barack announced:

And if you will join me in this improbable quest, if you feel destiny calling, and see as I see, a future of endless possibility stretching before us; if you sense, as I sense, that the time is now to shake off our slumber, and slough off our fear, and make good on the debt we owe past and future generations, then I'm ready to take up the cause, and march with you, and work with you. Together, starting today, let us finish the work that needs to be done, and usher in a new birth of freedom on this Earth.

We must trust in each other, if we are to achieve progress. Though, imo, we should keep this sense of improbability. That we must continue pushing the envelope. For me, nothing is more thrilling then the event horizon.

Those feelings you have are from your intuition reaching out, trying to find bearings. Keep that! But know, you are among friends. We are on this improbabale quest, together.

Blog on, brother.

Excited for you and Laura (4.00 / 2)
I must confess I got a little teary eyed reading your diary. I am so excited for you and more than happy to contribute a modest sum for your trip.

This convention will be the first in twenty years that I will not attend either as a delegate or a spectator. I look forward to reading your inside scoop on all the happenings so it will definitely alleviate the disappointment of not being there.

Yes, we will be nominating the next President of the United States, but you will also be having lots of fun with like minded Democrats. Try to be discreet with what you share with us. :)

Mike, the props are all yours... (0.00 / 0)
I've never done this before.  Like most of us, I'm just trying to do my part... sometimes I get lazy and sidetracked and busy with my life. I am a little envious that you get to go, but also nervous with butterflies in my stomach for you... it's an awesome task you go on, but we'll all be watching you and reading you and counting on you to be our eyes and ears!
