Pesky College Voters "Toying with Democracy"

by: Dean Barker

Sun Jan 25, 2009 at 19:27:10 PM EST

Remember when Dartmouth undergrad Vanessa Sievers won her Grafton County treasurer race, and the sour grapes incumbent who lost called her a "teenybopper" and accused her supporters of being "brainwashed"?

Well, apparently, the hard feelings are not over among the Hanover elephants:

Yesterday, several frustrated members of the Hanover GOP committee questioned why Dartmouth students voted at all in county races. It seems unlikely that they knew very much about the candidates or the issues, they said.

"I read it as toying with democracy," said resident Jenni Stebbins. "I think what happened to (Elliott) is a shame and a sham."

Members of the committee floated several different ideas, including asking College Republicans to ask other students not to vote in the county elections.

Is it any wonder why Hanover is the most Democratic town in the state of New Hampshire?  The GOP there doesn't believe voters matter unless they reach a certain age. (At least the head of the GOP in Dartmouth had the good sense to knock that anti-democratic idea down.)

I don't know what's worse, the premise that college students' votes are less valuable than others, the presumption that they're not aware of local issues, or the mythos that the college vote is what makes Hanover left-leaning.

According to the Valley News article linked above, college students only accounted for about 30% of the vote in Hanover (around 2,250 voters).  Now, let's review: Obama absolutely demolished McCain, 6140 to 1328. Jeanne Shaheen trounced John E. Sununu 5275 to 1813.  Paul Hodes to Jennifer Horn 5438 to 1382. John Lynch to Joe Kenney 5607 to 1029.    If every single Dartmouth student failed to vote, the GOP still would have been badly routed. "Regular" residents of Hanover are voting for Democrats because they're not buying what the Republicans have been offering for the past eight years.

But it's all the students' fault for that annoying voting they did. How dare they.

More: sdoyle in the comments demolishes what little was left of the argument:

Vanessa won not just Hanover, but other towns like, Canaan, Easton, Enfield, Franconia, Hanover, Lebanon (All wards), Lyme, Orford, Plymouth. And every other town was a very close race.

Logic Fail (0.00 / 0)
It seems unlikely that they knew very much about the candidates or the issues, they said.

It's unlikely that college students know about candidates or issues?  Unless one assumes that the older we get, the better informed we are, the implication is that only those who are already out of college should be voting.  And yet, nobody questions that, quite obviously, older folks who did not go to college deserve a vote just like everyone else.  Maybe it's because it's been shown that both students and people with higher degrees tend to be more Democratic than the population at large.

The moral of the story is: Republican operatives think members of liberal-leaning demographics shouldn't be allowed to vote.

In other news, Ken Blackwell is running for Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The Funny Thing. . . . (4.00 / 1)
How many NON-college students know what the County Treasurer does, or had any insight into Vanessa's opponent's performance?

The NH GOP has been trying to keep students from voting since I ran the Dartmouth Dems in the early '90s.  Fortunately, they've failed every time under the weight of their own bad logic.

The wrong problem (4.00 / 4)
If Grafton County Republicans are losing elections because of students voting, them maybe they should do what the Democrats did: campaign for the student vote.

Sununu may still think the voting age is 21...

Have you written a letter to the editor today? Have you donated today? Have you put up signs? Have you made calls? Have you talked to your neighbors?

or educate themselves on the issues (0.00 / 0)
we are right on the issues that matter

I might have known more about (4.00 / 2)
the county office elections when I was in college.

I certainly didn't know less.

Adding - (0.00 / 0)
Things may be different in Hillsborough and perhaps Rockingham, where the county offices represent a lot of people and have a higher profile.

If we abolished county government... (4.00 / 1)
Then there would be one less thing for the Republicans to complain about.

Toying with Democracy (4.00 / 3)
Ugh, I can't stand people who say things like that.

The Hanover GOP can't blame the loss of their candidate on those liberal college students from Dartmouth. 2,280 students from Dartmouth voted, and not everyone of them voted for Democrats, and not everyone of them voted all the way up and down the ticket.

Vanessa won not just Hanover, but other towns like, Canaan, Easton, Enfield, Franconia, Hanover, Lebanon (All wards), Lyme, Orford, Plymouth. And every other town was a very close race. I guess it was those darn Dartmouth students that live in Lebanon.

The Hanover GOP and Grafton County GOP should have worked harder at telling people to vote all the way down the ballot. They have no one to blame but themselves. College students have every right to vote for every office on the ballot, including county offices. Our tuition goes towards taxes, payrolls, etc. Students become part of the community, work there, live there, use services, shop, etc.

And just a thought of why she may have lost, perhaps she was bad at her job.

It is so irritating to hear the idea of denying residents of this state the right to vote.

Isn't It Amazing... (4.00 / 2)
Isn't it amazing that when candidates (or parties) ignore any constituency, they usually don't win that constituency.

The House Election Law Committee, on which I've served for more terms than I can remember and which Ray Buckley served on when he was in the House, has heard about "those college voters" many times in bills sponsored by ... you can guess it ... Republicans.

To paraphrase Sean, I can't understand people who do things like that.  They're so paranoid of Democrats that they can't even understand the word "democracy."

Fortunately for Dartmouth students, and UNH Students in Durham and students and voters all over the state, good Democrats including Election Committee Vice Chair David Pierce, who happens to represent Hanover, are there to protect everyone's rights.  Those rights include voting.

College students, Massachusetts voters... (4.00 / 2)
The dog ate my homework - so many excuses!!
Republicans in NH have gotten vey boring in blaming everyone else but themselves for losing elections.

Representation (4.00 / 1)
College Students do have a lot of strong voices supporting them in Concord.

Sen. Matt Houde (Dartmouth)
Sen. Molly Kelly (Keene State)
Sen. Amanda Merrill (UNH)
Sen. Lou D'Allesandro (St. Anselm)

My question to the Hanover GOP is, would you all still be crying if you had a Republican Dartmouth student run for office?

In addition to Vanessa:

One of our alums (Timothy Geithner '83)was confirmed yesterday as Treasury Secreatry.

And another (Kirsten Gillebrand '88) will be sworn in this morning as the junior US Senator from New York!

And Paul Hodes '72 keeps kicking ass. . . .
