NYT: Commerce Decision Likely Monday or Tuesday

by: Dean Barker

Fri Jan 30, 2009 at 15:15:00 PM EST

First things first: Judd Gregg has confirmed that he's under consideration:
"I am aware that my name is one of those being considered by the White House for Secretary of Commerce, and am honored to be considered, along with others, for the position," Gregg said in a statement. "Beyond that there is nothing more I can say at this time."

Ambinder's sources tell him Gregg's not just one of many, but maybe the one:

The White House isn't commenting, but my understanding that Gregg is a leading candidate for the job, not just a regular candidate.

...The White House understands that Gregg's successor might be a Republican; Gregg understands that the White House does not object to this possibility, which is one reason why Gregg is taking the call to serve so seriously.

Speaking of Republican appointments, Pindell weighs in via Political Wire:
Pindell notes that Gov. John Lynch (D), who would choose Gregg's replacement in the Senate, "is the type of guy that would pick a Republican just because he is replacing a Republican and to bone up his bi-partisan credibility. Lynch has yet to comment on the issue -- heck Gregg has yet to be appointed -- but right now the money is on former Gov. Walter Peterson (R). He was chair of the 'Republicans for Lynch' committee, would vote with Democrats as much as Maine's Senators do, and most likely wouldn't run in 2010."
Now where have I heard that theory before?

And along those lines, CQ has firmer language about a Republican appointment than anyone other outlet, though I'm not sure I buy it at this point:

Gregg is negotiating with New Hampshire Gov. Jim Lynch, a Democrat, to appoint a Republican as his replacement, according to Democratic leadership aides. They say it is the only way Gregg would take the job.

...Lynch spokesman Colin Manning would not confirm whether Gregg was negotiating with the governor to appoint a Republican as a potential replacement.

"This is between Sen. Gregg and the White House," Manning said.

And the NYT makes my heart flutter:

The White House hopes to make the announcement for Commerce Secretary next Monday or Tuesday, with the precise date depending upon F.B.I background checks.
To think, two long years of tracking Sununu, and now we could be bidding adieu to the other one just a couple weeks after inauguration day, followed by an appointment and quite possibly a special election in the House.

And here I thought this would be an off-year for BH.

"I think, if Judd Gregg does get appointed and accepts, that Gov. Lynch should appoint John Sununu to fill his Senate seat."

Is there any rule that says (0.00 / 0)
a sitting Senator is ineligible to be appointed Senator? Could Lynch name Shaheen as Gregg's replacement - with her casting New Hampshire's two votes on each issue?

She has the strongest claim to a mandate...

There's no way the discussion would have gone this far, had it not been a solid possibility.

Could be very good for the President's desire to make sure that politics stay out of the economic recovery plan...

which is also why I doubt there's a heapin' helpin' of politics in the replacement discussion, if there even is one, as yet.

Or Maybe... (4.00 / 4)
Gov. Peterson might be the safest choice: A distinguished statesman with friends in both parties who would agree not to seek election in 2010 - leaving the decks clear for a fair fight next year among all those interested.

And aren't there other public servants - not necessarily recognized as politicians - who might agree to serve for the next year and a half? How about outgoing Dartmouth president Jim Wright?

And I do like elwood's suggestion re: J.D. Salinger (who pulled a Democratic ballot in the presidential primary, by the way). What a treat to discover hitherto unpublished Glass family short stories mysteriously inserted in the Congressional Record amid floor debates on credit market regulation!

I must be missing something (4.00 / 1)
because I sure as hell don't get this.

Why do we want Judd Gregg, neocon, to be the Commerce Sec.? What good has he ever done? Am I the only one who remembers all those awful Bush budgets that Dudd was a cheerleader for?

He's consistently voted against women, children, and minorities, and Obama is going to reward him for that with a cushy cabinet appointment?

Am I the only one who thinks this is WRONG, really WRONG?

I understand that Gregg is arrogant enough to demand he be replaced by a Republican. If Lynch caves in to those demands, than he is the wussy, spineless Dem I've always suspected him of being.

It's better to have a guy like that pissing out of your tent than into it. (4.00 / 1)
Which is what JFK said to his brother about LBJ before they picked him as a running mate.

There's an assumption that Obama can control him in that office. I certainly don't think Obama is going to take advisement from him. And if he does not implement the law of the land, he can be removed.

or (0.00 / 0)
Gregg could get appointed, then leave, saying Obama was doing a terrible job, and he couldn't support him.

That might have an impact in NH.

I do not think a misogynist/racist/homophobe should be rewarded with a plum appointment. If this transpires, I'm going to have to think long and hard about my allegiance to the Democratic Party.

Susan -- You're Not Alone... (4.00 / 2)
Susan, you're not the only one who doesn't "as hell" get this.  I can't figure out the rush by some Democrats to praise this guy, who's voted against so many good Democratic ideals -- in fact, just simply good ideals of democracy.  Do we have to list them in addition to those you listed?

For goodness sake, aren't there good Democrats who can make great Commerce Secretaries?  Of course there are.

And do we REALLY believe that "promoting" this Republican "up" to the White House Cabinet and in charge of tens of thousands of employees will somehow help us in 2010 in making/keeping his seat Democrat?

Here are four points I'll repeat:

1.  I've said two months ago I don't think Gregg will even run again, but by making him Commerce Secretary will build morale by NH Republicans and energize the eventual Republican US Senate nominee in 2010.  I can't see how that won't happen with Gregg being a sitting Cabinet member.

2.  If Judd Gregg does run for US Senate in 2010, now he's got a bucketful of positive Democrat comments he can use.  He can say he was "sought" by Barack Obama, and "endorsed" by many a-Democrat.  Why are WE promoting this guy?

3.  If he doesn't run in 2010 and doesn't become Commerce Secretary, we've made him stronger than ever as a voice for Republicans in our state, especially among business people and those of us concerned about the economy.  After all, it will be said -- Obama "considered" him for that choice.  He'll be considered having left at the top of his game after saying "no" to a President's request.  And his endorsement of his NH Republican US Senate replacement will be all the more valuable. He shouldn't have even been considered for the post, and at least we shouldn't be cheering for him.

4.  To emphasize your point, if he takes the Commerce Secretary post and were ever asked to resign, or if he resigned because he "lost confidence" in Obama, the politics of that for New Hampshire Democrats and our candidates for 2010 and 2012 could be quite negative, depending on when he leaves.  Why take that chance?  This guy didn't wake up the day after Election Day and all of a sudden send his loyalty to Obama.

I've known Judd Gregg for years, and enjoyed many years of working with his father, the late Governor Hugh Gregg, on the cause of the NH First-In-The-Nation Presidential Primary.  I like Judd personally.  But as our Commerce Secretary?  No thank you.

Some names:  Bill Bradley, Dick Gephardt, Bruce Babbit, Mike Dukakis,  and there are other Republicans too.  Ohhh -- I'll stop there because there are dozens.  Democrats are not bankrupt or desperate in finding quality talent.  We have a bench.  We don't need Judd Gregg to sit next to Barack Obama for four or eight years.

It's worth noting (0.00 / 0)
That it is better for the Dems in the Senate if Lynch picks a Republican who sides with them. B/c the they had 60 votes thing will be around next cycle.

Of course, one could argue that having the official 60 votes might light a fire under them -- I agree with Nate that there is nothing magical about 60 -- but it does scream accountability.

Incidentally if you want to see how Judd is still wreaking havoc, check out http://downwithtyranny.blogspo...

Clarify, please. We don't have 60, and neither did the GOP.

Less Lynch's choice than Obama's (4.00 / 1)
I think it's telling the Colin said that it was between the Gov and the WH. It is inconceivable to me that the President would appoint Gregg WITHOUT a bullet-proof promise from Lynch to appoint a Democrat. Do we really think Obama is sooooo crazy about Judd Gregg, views him as soooo necessary that he'd appoint him and NOT get the 60th vote out of it? If Lynch doesn't go along, Obama will look elsewhere - in or out of the Senate. The beauty of this choice is that gets the Dems to 60 AND bolsters Obama's bi-partisan bona fides. I mean, I'm sure if Lynch won't do it, another Democratic governor would, say John Baldacci (Snowe or Collins) in Maine, just off the top of my head. Or Ted Strickland in Ohio (Voinovich) or Easley in NC (Burr) or TN or KY or KS or...well, you get the idea...

Politics as Usual (4.00 / 2)
To me this is no different than what has been complained of in the past - there is a whole lot of horsetrading going on.

Senator Gregg gives up his Senate seat for a plum cabinet post and a promise from the Governor Lynch that a Republican caretaker person will be appointed in his place.

What does President Obama get in return?  A possible vote on the wish list stimulus legislation and a better chance to beat the filibuster in the future (maybe). Who knows what else is promised.

In the meantime, the American people have to trust that the good guys are in control and know what they are doing. Hopefully, the end result is something that makes things better and we don't get screwed.  I don't know, but I feel nervous.

I'm with you. (4.00 / 1)
Just hoping enough rational adults (of any age) are thinking this through carefully, consequences of moves, etc. If this is done with some thought, it could help at a time when a lot of critical legislative initiatives need to happen fast. Done carelessly, disaster could ensue. Always thinking of the unintended consequences, that's where I feel a little unsettled.

That said, Walt wouldn't be a terrible choice as a placeholder.

Well this part (4.00 / 1)
a promise from the Governor Lynch that a Republican caretaker person will be appointed in his place.
has not been confirmed by anyone, but seems instead to be specualtion that keeps getting picked up more and more in each subsequent article, so that it starts to take on a narrative life of its own in the media frenzy.

It could very well be the case, but there's no basis yet for believing it.

I am a worrier by nature.

Funny you mention Hillary because I seem to remember me jokingly suggesting that Hillary withdraw her name from consideration for the nomination in return for Bayh being named VP and you and Jack Mitchell going off the deep end.

Now that Obama is governing, do you guys believe that trading a cabinet post is different from trading the VP nomination?
