Why Is John H. Sununu Insulting Republicans?

by: Kathy Sullivan 2

Wed Feb 11, 2009 at 15:11:16 PM EST

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

So, the NHGOP elects a new chairman, and in one of his first interviews with the press, he insults the Republicans who just put themselves forward to run for office. Yup, this is what John H. said to the Keene Sentinel in an interview published today:

"We have not been able to field the best candidates in a number of races - House races, state Senate races and across the board."

Okay, I will agree that their recent gubernatorial candidates have been fairly bad - but he is not referring specifically to them. He is referring to their House and State Senate candidates.

Kathy Sullivan 2 :: Why Is John H. Sununu Insulting Republicans?
Now, I don't know if he is referring to the NH legislative house candidates, or the congressional candidates, when he refers to House, but either way, that is pretty nasty of the Republican chair. If he means the congressional candidates, then he is insulting both the 2008 nominees, Jennifer Horn and Jeb Bradley, and, I think, the people who lost the primaries, like Johnny Stephen, Grant Bosse and Bob Clegg.

If he means the NH legislative candidates, then he is referring to people like, occasional poster and NHAC leader Mike Biundo, and his excutive director and sockpuppet, Tammy Simmons, both of whom ran and lost in Manchester. And what about poor Sandra Reeves, a long time Republican state  rep from Manchester's Ward 1, who went down to defeat?  What does Sununu have against her?

I mean, some of these state rep candidates may not have been excellent, but sheesh, Mr. Chairman, these people are the base of your party, the loyalists who put themselves out there for the GOP because they believe in your party's principles - and to you they are what? Chopped liver?

And what about those state senate candidates? Like Eaton and Laflamme?

He said, "across the board", so I guess that includes Republican candidates like former Merrimack County attorney St. Hillaire and Russell Prescott who lost to Bev Hollingworth.  And all those county candidates.

Hundreds of Republicans who signed up and ran, who knocked on doors, made phone calls, stuffed envelopes, all in a serious effort to try to win elective office on behalf of the New Hampshire Republican Party.  Guess what, guys and gals? Your new chairman just dis'd you - big time. How happy does that make you?

Wait a minute - he did say "across the board", didn't he. Does that mean - yes, I guess it does.

John H. Sununu just insulted his own son.

They really can't field the best candidates, since the voters of New Hampshire have decided that the better candidate in most races is the one on the Democratic ticket.

How dare he (4.00 / 1)
insult Joe Kenney that way?

Democrats' Best Republican Friend (0.00 / 0)
John Dad Sununu is working himself up to become the Democrats' best Republican friend!  (BRF)

This is standard corporate politics (4.00 / 1)
Pretty common in regular politics too.

The self-promoter comes in and immediately says what a terrible job his predecessor did, and what a big mess there is to clean up. If it takes the self-promoter longer than you hoped to show results, that just shows what a disaster he inherited.

If the people who installed him were hoping for some recognition of their own efforts over the years, they will be disappointed. That sort of talk doesn't serve the self-promoter's interests.

well (4.00 / 3)
when you have the highest IQ in the room it is an insult to be brought down by the dummies around you...I mean I can understand how he feels...how is he going to soar with the eagles if has to work with Turkeys? Valid point.

Not in the shot

Good luck finding "better" candidates for 2010!

The man insults his own son, you can't make this stuff up.

If I were doing my Ben Affleck imitation.. (0.00 / 0)
...of Ben doing Keith, I would say something like:

He should RESIGN!

But I don't want him to resign, because he is living up to my expectations.

From Old Man Sununu's perspective... (0.00 / 0)
... the best Republican candidates these days are Rush "I Hope He Fails" Limbaugh and David Duke. Since neither of them is a Granite Stater (or much of an American at all, except under a strict legal definition), he can't get them. Other than that, from his perspective, the 'best' candidates are ones nutty enough to be hailing from +20R districts, and he's bewailing that New Hampshire doesn't have any of those anymore.

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!

I don't think so (4.00 / 1)
If anything, I suspect he is going to be telling the GOP that they have to run as economic conservatives, not social conservatives. His ideal candidate is a millionaire who can self-finance and doesn't talk a lot about abortion and gay marriage.

(Nonetheless Craig Benson probably isn't on his speed dial.)

Also I meant that he would personally consider those the best candidates, not from a political perspective. And I meant that NH doesn't have any +20R districts anymore, not Republicans nutty enough to win in said districts.
