SD-3: Bud's Definitely Running, Fergus Considering

by: Dean Barker

Tue Feb 24, 2009 at 05:54:12 AM EST

The special election triggered by William Denley's resignation is taking shape:
Several possible candidates emerged yesterday. Former state GOP chairman Fergus Cullen said he's considering a run. And a spokeswoman for Democrat Bud Martin, who lost to Denley by 500 votes last year, said Martin is "definitely running."
I suspect the path will be quickly cleared for Bud on our side, given how close he came during the general election to swinging that seat.  For the elephants, though, the path is less clear.  According to the article, Fergus doesn't sound too interested if there's going to be a primary, and other names are being tossed around: Joe Kenney, Sam Cataldo (who lost in the primary), even Jeb Bradley.

The special election is likely to be set by the EC on April 21, or else that will be the date of a primary if need be, with the election then on May 26.

I met Bud Martin once and thought he was a decent, nice guy. Apparently he was a lifelong Republican from Center Sandwich who changed parties only recently.  This is fascinating to me because I know some other Granite Staters from that town who did exactly that as well.  So to me, he perfectly fits the trend I've been noticing in northern parts of the state of the natives no longer recognizing what the modern Republicans made of their once Grand Party.

(But the myth-makers should feel free to keep blaming it on Taxachussetts.)

Bud Martin (4.00 / 8)
is a thoroughly decent guy. Denley's smear campaign against him was reprehensible.

Bud and I discussed his leaving the GOP once, and as he put it, "My party left me behind." As we all know, there isn't any place for the folks we used to call "Main St. Republicans" any more. Bud was never a fire breathing right wing ideologue. The myth is great cover for the GOP's own failure. I was looking at voter registration numbers in Carroll County yesterday. Bartlett has always been a sort of black hole for Democrats - BUT- in looking at numbers for 2004, 2006, and 2008, GOP registration numbers have steadily declined in Bartlett, even as Democratic registration was on the rise. It's not because the liebrul flatlanders have been flocking to Bartlett.

Another GOP name being bandied about for the senate seat is former state rep. David Babson from Ossipee. A Kenney/Cullen primary sure would be entertaining.

It's similar where I live. (0.00 / 0)
Many people are still registered Republicans, but are more and more turning Dem in the voting booth. And these aren't the transplants, but people who have been here all their lives.

There are, of course, some die hard wing-nuts around, but as long as Fox News still broadcasts its lies and people believe them, there will be that 20-30% that cannot be reached just yet.

Forget Kenney v. Cullen... (0.00 / 0)
I want a Cullen v. Bradley primary. I was surprised at first they were rumored to be interested, but it makes complete sense. They each would like a stepping stone position for a congressional run. The good news? If either/both of them run and lose, that will certainly put a crimp in their congressional plans, since no one wants to lose a state senate primary and then try a congressional primary the next year, right? A classic case of (Republicans) eating their young is my best case scenario right now.
