Rebellion Without a Cause

by: This Was The Moment

Fri Mar 06, 2009 at 18:38:31 PM EST

(It's really breathtaking how here in NH and nationally the GOP thinks voters are memory-challenged morons.  No wonder they keep losing at the polls. - promoted by Dean Barker)

Republicans are beating up on President Obama for his 'big government spending' in a time of crisis, when only the federal government can pump oxygen back into the economy.  They're standing lockstep against all spending, including keeping the lights on in Washington.

But since the state of New Hampshire can't print money and can't run massive deficits, and since raising taxes is NEVER NEVER NEVER okay, what are Republicans criticizing Governor Lynch about these days?  This is the centerpiece of the NHGOP homepage right now:

There's no article or press release to go with this. It's just an infographic.

ARGH! You tax and spend Democrats with your tax and spend Democrat spending cuts! NEW HAMPSHIRE DESERVES BETTER!

Hilarious as this blatant ideological 180 is, it demonstrates an important point: the only principle the Republican Party stands on in 2009 is that Democrats are bad.  And that's no way to put Country First.

It's not about the substance. (4.00 / 1)
It's about the hypocrisy.  Principle is irrelevant to them.

The problem with "Tax and Spend" (4.00 / 1)
is that it's not "lend and spend."

I suspect that the objection to using cap and trade revenues for new energy development is based on the same premise--that it doesn't put money into the financier's pocket.

What we're looking at here is a whole class of middlemen seeing their easy income stream disappear.  Yes, they talked about taking risks and being rewarded.  But, really, what they were into was gambling with other people's money and counting on making a killing.

Hunter's rant is not to be missed

Ooh! Ooh! I know! I know! Who are: health insurance companies?

This is priceless coming from the party of Craig Benson's kitchen table - and all that earnest talk about living within our means.

Is Rush sharing his Oxycontin with the entire GOP?

What makes this particular campaign so feeble (0.00 / 0)
is that voters understand that times are tough for everyone, and they know this holds true for the state just as it does for towns, companies, and individuals. Of course there are going to be cuts and of course their are going to be sacrifices. This surprises and angers no one, because there really is little choice.

My guess is with about 3 seconds of reflection, the voters also realize that this sort of thing is utterly hypocritical, coming as it does from the party that believes a permanent structural budget deficit is a good thing for the state government.

The Republicans had a chance to present an alternative budget, showing how they would spread the pain. But it is easier to sit back and attack the people who are actually making tough decisions than it is to stand up and be part of the discussion.

By that logic, Republicans are right about federal spending, and they're not. (0.00 / 0)
They say that when everybody else is tightening their belts, the federal government must also, which is exactly the wrong thing to do.  Everybody spending less makes the economy shrink, and when the economy shrinks, supply responds to a lack of demand by downsizing and laying people off.  More people laid off, more people spending less, it's a downward spiral.  The federal government must increase its spending (unlike the states, it can) to stabilize the economy by offsetting the decrease in private spending with an increase in public spending, keeping things moving.

Agree or disagree with this widely-accepted theory, the Republican Party would not tolerate that not-very-long thought process.
