Elections, Hope, Change

by: Dean Barker

Tue Mar 10, 2009 at 05:37:08 AM EDT

Elections result in change.

Yesterday that change meant not having to suffer through any more of Bush and Sununu's barriers to science.

One of New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's granddaughters was at the White House when President Barack Obama formally signed an executive order opening the door for more stem cell research.

Shaheen says she has long favored embryonic stem cell research, but the issue became personal when granddaughter Elle was diagnosed with diabetes.

Obama on Monday reversed a ban on federal funding for the research.

Dean Barker :: Elections, Hope, Change
Carol Shea-Porter:
"Today, President Obama has given hope to the millions of Americans suffering from Type 1 Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injuries.  By lifting the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, the President has placed science above political ideology.  The United States must continue to be the world leader in science and technology and lifting this ban is an important step."

Paul Hodes:
"I applaud President Obama's decision to overturn an eight year policy of prohibiting federal funding for embryonic stem cell research on new cell lines. Embryonic stem cell research holds the potential for cures for debilitating diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.  Now, we can finally give research scientists the tools and federal resources they need to unlock cures for millions of Americans who are suffering today."

Thank You, Mr. President (4.00 / 3)
As a Type I diabetic -- like Elle -- I want to show my gratitude to our wonderful President.  Elections DO mean change.

It gives hope (4.00 / 3)
to so many families. My family has a history of diabetes, Parkinson's and Cystic Fibrosis. For those of us who have witnessed the suffering of loved ones, President Obama's actions gives hope that other families will not need to go through such tragedy.

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

The Mark Halperins of the World Disagree - and Who Cares? (4.00 / 5)
Today on the way to work I heard Mark Halperin on the radio saying that while President Obama is "still fairly popular" with "the people" (us unwashed masses), the "elites" in New York and Washington are debating on whether he is trying to do too much - why was he talking about stem cell research yesterday, and education today, when he should be focused just on the economy. Putting aside the fact that the president should be able to multi-task, thank god he is focusing on many things!  George Bush, with the complicity of the Washington and New York "elites" messed things up to a fare-thee-well, on a lot of fronts, and the reason President Obama is popular with us unwashed masses is that he is fixing things on a number of fronts.

So, thank you Barack Obama - having seen what Alzheimer's can do, I am very happy to see that science is playing a role again in our decision making processes.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Science again matters in American life (4.00 / 3)
My friend's son has Diabetes and she was invited and honored to be at the signing. Here's what she said on her FB status

Debby B. ...back from the East Room where I witnessed President Obama: "Science, which once propelled men to the moon, again matters in American life."
