Sununu Pere Visits the North Country

by: susanthe

Thu Mar 19, 2009 at 15:43:10 PM EDT

Poppy Sununu spent an hour with the editorial board of the Conway Daily Sun on March 6. The write up is in today's paper:
http://www.laconiadailysun.com...

This story  is a gold mine. At this juncture, John H's strategy for the GOP is to move forward into the past. We'll all be okay, if we can only return to the 80's!

more after the fold:

susanthe :: Sununu Pere Visits the North Country
 Some of the highlights:

In the end, he was convinced to run, even though critics argued that the new face of the Grand Old Party was, in fact, an old one from the 1980s. Sununu is well aware of that criticism, and has a solid response: He represents an era when Republicans stood for something, for a tight control over spending.

Sununu is laboring under the impression that there is some sort of national collective amnesia - and that none of us remember the fact that Ronald Reagan (back there in those mythical 80's) doubled the national debt, and increased the deficit by 300%.

"I think the energy issue will be handled terribly," said Sununu. "This idea of just throwing money at technology.
I am an old engineer, and I know what we can do and cannot do. We need an energy package that includes nuclear, natural gas, clean coal, a little expansion of domestic oil and natural gas. Then go develop solar and wind. But those are long term. We should not throw what we have away and pray on some long-
term wish. This is a serious issue."

In other words, let's continue to throw money at OLD school, dirty technology, and when we stop lining the pockets of Big Oil, Big Nuclear, and Big Coal - THEN maybe we'll get around to working on that solar and wind stuff.

There's also the obligatory reminder of his intellect. If he were as smart as they say he is - would he have to keep reminding us all the time?

He agrees that like energy, health care is a pressing issue and that something needs to be done. "But the argument that not being able to do anything on these issues for the past 25 years is not a justi?cation for doing something bad now," said
Sununu.

Apparently the Hog Reave has great health insurance, and the rest of us can just ....suffer. Can really he be arrogant enough to think that this message has some sort of populist appeal?

My favorite quote, bolded:

"Dan Quayle was the smartest political guy in the White House. He has done very well in private life since leaving of?ce. But in a way he never recovered from that news cycle," said Sununu,

Read the whole thing. It's mind boggling.

Faulty Memory (4.00 / 2)
Why does John H. Sununu keep forgetting that he increased spending by 27% in one year alone while he was governor? Why does he keep forgetting that he increased the state budget larger than any other governor in at least the last 40 years? Why does he keep forgetting about the deficit he left Gregg? Why does he keep forgetting after 11 years of Democratic governors NH still is the safest and best on a litany of issues compared to the other 49 states? Why does he keep forgetting that it is 2009 not 1982 and NH voters don't fall for his misleading spin lines anymore?

Have you written a letter to the editor today? Have you donated today? Have you put up signs? Have you made calls? Have you talked to your neighbors?

Hmmm (0.00 / 0)
"He should use his own strength
and charm, as I did," said Sununu with a wink[...]

How about using government aircraft for a personal sky-cab, as Sununu did? How about busting New Hampshire's budget, as Sununu did? How about getting thrown out from a position as Chief of Staff in the White House, as Sununu did? Or being able to sling partisan slogans without pausing for an instant to actually consider an opposing position while hosting Crossfire, as Sununu did?

And the little "I got tired of talking about race decades ago" screed on page six from some eighth-grade teacher from Maine didn't do much to make the paper look sane, either.

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!

In the interest of full disclosure, I will point out that that same paper publishes an editorial written by me, on a biweekly basis.

They aren't completely insane. :)

Right. I'm so glad he brought up Dan Quayle. (4.00 / 1)
Not only is Dan Quayle the head of Cerberus Global Investments, he's acquired Chrysler which is now looking for a bailout.  And then there are Quayle's connections to hedge funds and insurance companies.

Let us consider the post-Vice Presidencies of late, (0.00 / 0)
Former Vice President Quayle, an embarrassment to his administration even before they were elected, has faded into relative obscurity while still managing to be a high-profile embarrassment.

Former Vice President Cheney has built a house across the street from the CIA, and is staying in the beltway to heckle the nation, now that he's no longer in a position to do direct damage in secret.

Former Vice President Gore, rightfully elected President but deprived of his victory by a chillingly and connivingly partisan Supreme Court, conceded rather than further a Constitutional crisis, and went on to become a world-renowned advocate for a signature issue of grave consequence, winning a Nobel Peace Prize for his work, and being known for bringing environmental issues to the forefront of American politics and seeing that they be taken seriously.

Seabrook, really? (0.00 / 0)
Sununu: "They saw no need for Seabrook. Thank God we have Seabrook,"

Holy crap. Really? Sununu wants to go there? Flashback time. From the NYT, 1988, during the reign of King John:

Who will set electricity rates for the customers of the Public Service Company of New Hampshire and whether the utility's assets will be sold emerged as major issues today following the utility's filing for bankruptcy protection.

Public Service, the principal owner of the Seabrook nuclear power plant, sought protection from creditors on Thursday in Federal District Court in Manchester, N.H. It was the first major public utility to take that step since the Depression.

The company's 2,000 workers were not paid today, and Robert J. Harrison, Public Service's president, said he did not expect them to receive paychecks next week. He said he expected paychecks to resume the following week.

....

Gov. John Sununu, a Republican who is a longtime supporter of nuclear power, today blamed the anti-nuclear groups that had opposed construction and licensing of the Seabrook plant for Public Service's financial problems.

Gov. Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts, a forceful opponent of the plant, has refused to submit evacuation plans for the six communities in Massachusetts that are within the emergency planning zone. Mr. Dukakis has said that no such plan was feasible for the coastal communities 40 miles north of Boston. Utility Called Indecisive

....

Lawyers for Public Service said the company had four months to offer a plan for reorganization.

According to documents on file in the bankruptcy court, Public Service's assets have a book value of nearly $3 billion, about 70 percent of which are in Seabrook. The company's liabilities are $1.7 billion, about half of which is in unsecured debt.

That's right, the Smartest Man of the 1980s decided to build a nuclear power plant on a freaking STATE BORDER and then wondered how that could possibly have gone wrong, BANKRUPTED a public utility company over his own ideological battle, and saddled New Hampshire with the highest electricity rates in the continental U.S. for a decade.

But thank God we have Seabrook.

Wow.

Seabrook is also atop an earthquake fault line.

The Brilliant Engineer really hit the jackpot.

finds you both amusing:
I find it amusing to listen to the Democrats try to rationalize their multi-decade battle against nuclear power in New Hampshire.... The only thing that has maintained an environmentally sound supply of energy at an economic level, both for the state of New Hampshire with Seabrook and New England with its nuclear power in this country, has been nuclear power. And if the Democrats had had their way, we'd probably be looking at 50 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity now. All the fantasy sources that they were talking about then never came through. They had grand visions of unlimited hydro-power, hydropower-generated electricity coming from Canada, and Canada can't even get that hydropower-generated electricity. So the Democrats have always - on energy policy - had fantasy visions and I think today they have fantasy visions because they are not including everything. They are only including their favorite few and that's a serious mistake. And I think young people today are smart enough to understand that.

What exactly is it (0.00 / 0)
with the Sununu Duo and telling us to stop our complaining about health care?

Great catches, Susan.
