N.H. governor says he'll OK civil unions

By NORMA LOVE Associated Press Writer

CONCORD, N.H. - Gov. John Lynch said Thursday he will sign legislation establishing civil unions for gay couples in New Hampshire.

"I believe it is a matter of conscience, fairness and preventing discrimination," Lynch told The Associated Press.

New Hampshire would become the fourth state to adopt civil unions, following Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Massachusetts established gay marriage.

Lynch had previously declined to take a public position on civil unions, though has supported expanding health benefits to same-sex partners of state workers. He came under fire from both sides for not weighing in - especially after a delay last week of the Senate vote on the House-passed bill.

The Senate votes next week, and Lynch said he is confident the legislation will pass. It would authorize civil unions beginning next year.

Update by Laura: Via a press release from the NHDP, Ray Buckley's statement on this:

"I am grateful for Gov. Lynch's decision to sign H.B. 437, the Civil Unions bill. Once again, the Governor has demonstrated that he supports all New Hampshire families and reminded us all of the Granite State's long tradition of opposing discrimination in any form.

"New Hampshire was among the first states to oppose slavery, support the expansion of suffrage to women and the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The passage of this legislation is just another example of the fact that Democrats, Republicans and Independents in New Hampshire oppose discrimination.

"The adoption of civil unions is an issue that also has wide bipartisan support. In Connecticut, Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell signed civil unions into law in her state and at least two of the Republican candidates for President also support it."

"Will become" (0.00 / 0)
Interesting that Norma Love takes Senate approval as a foregone conclusion.

I think she's right.

Oops -- interesting (0.00 / 0)
The AP says "would become." The UL version of the same article says "thus will become."

Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (4.00 / 1)
This is great news!  New Hampshire is really becoming a beacon of civil rights in our country.
[and can we stop rushing to think the worst of Democratic officials based on speculation?]

I've never been so pleased (0.00 / 0)
to say: "I was wrong."

(But a little bit more transparency in Concord would be nice, too.)

Are you kidding? (4.00 / 2)
Without the angst and drama, you would be bored!
By the way, everyone still needs to call their senators to ask their support, and also to call the Governor's office to say thank you, they all need the support because the anti's will be screaming at the news.

Yes, I often prefer being wrong to being right. (4.00 / 1)
But, doesn't it strike you as strange that the Governor used the phrase "prevent discrimination" instead of promote equality?  It's almost as if equality has become a dirty word.  But that's what it's about isn't it?

What I'm hoping now is that people can get beyond defining domestic partnerships in terms of sexual relations and recongize that society benefits when people have caring partners who can act on their behalf in other than an attorney or guardian relationship.

From one perspective (0.00 / 0)
We are all born equal. The state cannot "promote equality" any more than it can promote gravity. But it can help end practices that try to deny that equality.

Phew... (0.00 / 0)
I was in the skeptic column, but very glad to see it was for not. Good thing as I was not really ready to run against him in the primary ;-)

It is a good thing for our state, another step forward for sure.

To think, a couple of years ago I was thinking of moving back to VT (goin' where the climate suits my clothes) to be in a progressive state!

In 2008 I think the NH-Sen race has the potential to be more exciting and more worthy of grassroots organizin' and politicin' that the Pres-Primary.

Kudos to John Lynch (0.00 / 0)
Civil rights is more than just a political issue, it's a moral one.  Thanks to Gov. Lynch for making me proud of my home state.

Excellent news! (0.00 / 0)

New England: Where American Revolutions start and where the ideas espoused in the Age of Enlightenment continue to hold sway.

I am so proud of our state for taking this first step towards full equality for all of it's citizens.

Equal opportunity under the law. (0.00 / 0)
That radically American democratic idea was renewed again today.

And our 231 year old experiment goes on...

Thank you Governor, House, Senate, and the great state of New Hampshire for leading the way.

Proud to have been around for this moment.

Nanny Cullen is upset (4.00 / 1)
He believes the government should decide who you marry, and what treatments your doctor can give you, and what you can smoke.

State Republican Chairman Fergus Cullen disagreed.

"You're kidding," he said when first told of Lynch's decision.

"The Democrats are going too far, too fast and Governor Lynch is going along with them," he said. "These are not the actions of a moderate governor."

Nanny Cullen speaks for "moderates".

E-mailed thank you notes (4.00 / 1)
to the Governor's office may be appropriate.

Let's be thankful (4.00 / 1)
that we have a Democratic governor, Democratic House and Democratic Senate.

Being in control does matter. Good things happen.

Proud of my Blue State (0.00 / 0)
Not too many years ago I would never have supposed that the state so dominated by the Union Leader would EVER have come so far. Today even the gray skies have turned a beautiful blue.

...the Doo Dah Man once told me you've got to play your hand. Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay 'em down.

Thank God. (0.00 / 0)
Lynch had my votes twice already.

But he just earned my respect. Is there a reelection campaign fund? What would be a good symbolic amount to give. (Keep in mind I'm pretty broke).

$4.37 fo 437 (4.00 / 1)
$4.37 for HB 437.

MANCHESTER, NH - Senator Hillary Clinton today made the following statement regarding the upcoming passage of legislation that will make New Hampshire the fourth state in the nation to adopt Civil Unions.

Help Needed: Civil Unions Isn't Passed Yet (4.00 / 3)
Hey - - there's work to be done before we celebrate!  You can be sure there will be a lot of people contacting their State Senators, and still contacting John Lynch, about their opposition to Civil Unions.  Those of us who support it have to be in touch with our Senators and the Governor.  There's more information on my recent post.

Also, there are bound to be quite a few opponents to the bill in attendance when the Senate votes on this next Thursday.  Just like an election, this is no time to fold up and assume victory.  There's some time to go yet.

So I beg everyone who supports Civil Unions, keep up the effort.  I've been around long enough to know what can happen, and the past several months working hard on this issue has taught me the ups and downs of this cause.

At the very least we owe it to John Lynch and the Senators who have indicated support of Civil Unions to back them up by telephone calls, E-Mails, and letters.  We can assume the other side is in higher gear than ever.
