And So Begins the Air War

by: Dean Barker

Mon Apr 23, 2007 at 20:03:08 PM EDT

I don't watch TV, but apparently Bill Richardson is the first of the Democratic candidates to get on NH air with an ad.  This is one of two ads, and, although this is admittedly kind of shallow of me, I love the stone walls in this one.  One, because it looks like it could have been filmed down the road from me.  Two, because the message with the image recalls Frost's Mending Wall.  And lastly, it helps remind us that there is a political New Hampshire beyond Manchester/Nashua.

He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'. - Frost

I beat you to it by more than an hour.  I just wasn't sure if this was enough for a diary.

I like the ad.  I think the stone wall is nice touch, especially for New Hampshire.

I think its smart for him to focus on his foreign policy credentials.  He's light years ahead of any other candidate in foreign policy experience.

And timely (4.00 / 1)
with Bush announcing the Baghdad Wall, and Maliki demurring:

Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.

I imagine Maliki's thought of Bush:

I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.

Clever, Mr. Frost, clever... (4.00 / 1)
to whom I was like to give of-fence.

It's kind of interesting how (0.00 / 0)
he puts diplomacy/bipartisanship together.

I think the tenor, and what he dodges in it, is perfect pitch for his strategy of going for the independents. He may end up this election's Jimmy Carter.

EVERYBODY'S going for the "independents" (0.00 / 0)
Clinton is. Obama is.

I'm looking for a primary candidate who is going for the Democrats.

Really? (0.00 / 0)
I'm looking for a primary candidate who will make a good president.

Me, too (4.00 / 1)
And I don't think the "a-partisan" approach that many candidates adopt leads to that. It becomes more difficult to lead a united Party during and after the election, and more difficult to claim a mandate that provides momentum in a new Administration.

Your Right (0.00 / 0)
I want a Candidate who's not afraid to call themselves a Democrat.

I want a candidate that is mostly a team player, and won't throw other Democrats under the bus when it suits them.

Richardson tries to some extent to distance himself from the Democratic label, and that's one of the things that's preventing my from enthusiastically supporting him right now.

Yes and no (0.00 / 0)
Edwards is clearly going for Democrats -- more clearly than any major candidate I've seen for a while. Hillary has who she has -- I'm not sure she's at liberty to pick her supporters.

Obama, Dodd, Richardson: I agree with you.

My feeling is if you want someone firmly planted in the Democratic corner in terms of how they campaign, Edwards is your person.

I'm not sure how they position themsleves in the primary on television ads though means much to me. There's part of me that really wants to see how adept these people are at forging a message for the middle. I really can't bear to lose this time.

I'm no ideological purist (0.00 / 0)
One of my views is that the GOP is the party of ideology and the Democratic Party stands for pragmatism. That is precisely why I think it is a mistake for candidates to avoid speaking for Democratic principles.

After all, those principles represent a long evolution of efforts to win the support of a solid majority of the American public for a progressive vision.

It isn't hard to speak plainly for core Democratic principles without appearing partisan. "As we move forward, we will ask our most fortunate neighbors to contribute most, and we will make sure our least fortunate neighbors are not forgotten." That sort of thing.

And I'd like to see the restraint to never frame oneself in contrast to "partisan Democrats." Ben Nelson doesn't do that; or nominee shouldn't either.

Bio Ad... (0.00 / 0)
The bio ad was really good.

I'm looking for a candidate (4.00 / 1)
who can win the White House...by appealing to Liberals,
Moderates and Independents, Men and Women, Midwestern Farmers, Southerners and Westerners, Trade Unionists and small business people, Blacks, Whites and Latinos, Students and Workers. Edwards can do that in a general election race. His positives are high and his negatives are low...
Note to Hillary, a good net fav/unfav rating can you get elected !

Next time, there may be no next time.

They have not yet begun to fight (4.00 / 3)
If you think that John Edwards won't have high negatives by the time the Republicans are done with him, you are deluding yourself. No matter who the Democratic candidate is, the Republicans will try to beat the bejesus out of him, they can't help themselves.  Been there, done that with Senator Clinton, but despite that, she has now been elected twice in New Yourk, with an excellent vote in upstate, by appealing to men and women, Republicans and indepenedents, farmers, etc.

whoever is the candiateis going to get whacked- (0.00 / 0)
that is clear.  I remember last time around, people telling me in the primary that Kerry was a fighter, that with his military record he would be the strongest candidate.  I did not beleive it then (Max Clealand)- I wanted someone who would be able to take on the fight to Bush.  For me that was Dean.

Everyone has to decide for themselves.  It's a gut thing.

Negatives can and will be created that do not yet exist.

[ Parent ]
Exactly! (0.00 / 0)
Whoever the nominee is (and I can support pretty much any of them, each one is pretty good), we have to expect that the Republicans will attack them incessantly, so I can't get too excited right now about whether someone has negative ratings in polls.  I do care about whether the person has what it takes to fight back.  One more factor to put in the decison till.
