Obama will Campaign in NH, Regardless of DNC Rules

by: Mike Caulfield

Mon Dec 11, 2006 at 19:29:04 PM EST

From the UL today (DiStaso):

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama says that if he runs for President, he will ignore a new national Democratic rule by campaigning in New Hampshire even if its first-in-the-nation primary is scheduled earlier than the Democratic National Committee's designated date.

This is not entirely surprising, given his choice to make his first pre-campaign event in New Hampshire, and his remarks regarding "retail politics" at the press conference Sunday.

It does mean, as far as I can see, if there is a Clash of the Titans battle between Clinton and Obama, it is going to happen primarily here.

Anyone care to disagree?

Larger Obama posts on the significance of the event are on their way, after saturation bombing elsewhere dies down...

'Primarily' here ?? (0.00 / 0)
Sheesh.

Completely unintentional (0.00 / 0)
Like when you can't stop saying verbal tick.

Not much to say about this I suppose, and I have some Obama-burnout...but for your edification.

Someone needs a good post on something nice and policy-centered on NH, like how zoning laws are misguided, or how we can build community friendly malls or something. I'm primarily burnt out.

The primary IS in good shape (0.00 / 0)
I haven't heard too much about organizing for the Nevada caucus, and it's pretty later for California, Florida, and Michigan to be adjusting their datebooks for 2008.

But it won't be Obama-Clinton: the other candidates will get a reasonable hearing. It will be interesting to see where the opportunities to differentiate pop up.

Obama has a nice high-level stance in talking about a new generation: it's a pretty clear but well-mannered slam at Clinton, Kerry, and Gore, and is reminiscent of JFK.

It will be like Gore vs. Bradley in 2000 all over again!

Senators Clinton and Obama will fight it out in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina and every other primary and caucus state.  They both will have organizations and the money to go everywhere.

However, the "secondary" candidates will probably not go away.  We already know that Edwards, Clark, Biden, Richardson and Vilsack are likely or are actually running.

Those secondary candidates will run guerilla campaigns and hope to hit it big in one of the early states so that they become part of the top tier candidates.  For example, Vilsack in the midwest (Iowa), Clark in the west (Nevada) and Edwards in the south (South Carolina).

If one of those "secondary" candidates wins one of those early contests, then they become the compromise choice to the Titans after they have battered each other silly.

I'm guessing it's more a Veep race (0.00 / 0)
with the exception of Edwards -- and even he might be happy to sign onto Obama-Edwards.

Edwards learned his lesson in 2004. (4.00 / 1)
He won't take the second position again.

Maybe Senator Obama will sign on with Edwards as his VP!  Edwards/Obama sounds okay.  Edwards has the experience of running as a national candidate in 2004 and Edwards has four more years of experience over Obama in the Senate.  They present a geographically balanced ticket.  They would be very appealing.  Obama is the VP for eight years and then he steps up in 2016 as the head honcho.

Didn't Obama goto Iowa? (0.00 / 0)
Or am I completely on crack?

So, does that mean the (0.00 / 0)
contest between the DNC and the DLC continues?  And the DCCC and the DSCC?  Is challenging Howard Dean supposed to be the sign of a macho man?  Scott Lehigh in today's Globe brought forth the comparison, describing Obama as "folksy."  Right!!!!

My meme for today is as follows.  Now that Bush/Cheney have effectively trashed FAITH and we know CHARITY sucks, is resurrecting HOPE the only alternative?  An "audacious hope" as opposed to the shop-worn "man from Hope"?

What I'd really like is to banish the K Street wordsmiths.  Lehigh got the message about "non-ideological" as well.  At least he didn't repeat the "standing-room only" line.

I don't think it is really challenging the DNC (0.00 / 0)
To the best of my knowledge, the DNC has not demanded that candidates refrain from campaigning is states that refuse to follow the recommended calendar. They have been pressuring states, but not candidates.

California is making noises about moving its primary to the front, contrary to DNC wishes -- and no candidate would blow off that state. DiStaso tried to make Obama's statement sound more confrontational for the sake of drama.
