1000 Strong - And Counting!

by: Kathy Sullivan

Wed Aug 01, 2007 at 09:33:14 AM EDT

As Dean noted elsewhere, the Draft Shaheen Committee has announced that we have met our goal of obtaining the names of 1000 Granite Staters who want Jeanne Shaheen to run for the United States Senate.  I was hoping to get 1000 names by the end of August, but we actually passed the threshhold over the weekend!

I am happy about this milestone for several reasons. First, in addition to support from three state senators and 33 members of the NH House, the overwhelming majority of supporters are not elected officials or state committee members. This list represents a real grass roots base of New Hampshire support for Jeanne Shaheen.

Second, the ease with which the names rolled in shows how much excitement there is about the possibility of Jeanne Shaheen running.  People remember that she signed legislation repealing laws that criminalized abortion, and repealing laws that prevented gays and lesbians from adopting or foster parenting. Granite Staters know that she successfully pushed for utility competition and rate relief, landmark environmental legislation, and expanded health insurance for children.  She also signed legislation adding sexual preference to NH's anti-discrimantion laws.

Third, people really want to defeat John E. Sununu!  They know he has not done his job, failing to provide oversight over, or demanding accountability from, the Bush adminsitration.

Last, we were able to meet the goal with a combination of old and new technology, which is the only way to win this cycle. Some people signed the petition on line. Others e mailed. We reached out to some people by telephone, and to others at events or meetings. A lot of people sent in names of friends, family and neighbors.

But we aren't done yet!  We are looking for even more people to join this growing grass roots army of New Hampshire people who want Jeanne Shaheen to run for the United States Senate against John E. Sununu. And this time, we want a fair election - no cheating!
