Shaheen May Seek Rematch

by: Mike Caulfield

Wed Nov 22, 2006 at 08:50:31 AM EST

According to the Political Wire, Shaheen may seek a rematch with Sununu:

Former New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen (D) said she "has not ruled out" running for Senate in 2008, "which would set up a re-match between her" and Sen. John Sununu (R), reports the Boston Globe.

Thanks to DavidNYC for the heads-up.

Me, I'm still really interested in the Dayton Duncan idea...

Shaheen, who was appointed IOP chief in 2005, served three terms as the Granite State's first female governor before losing her 2002 Senate bid to Republican John E. Sununu by about 19,000 votes-just 4 percent of all ballots cast.

But it's still not clear that Shaheen will challenge Sununu to a rematch.

"Jeanne is really enjoying her work with students and faculty at the Institute of Politics, and has no other plans at this time," IOP spokesman Esten Perez wrote in an e-mail. In an interview with Boston Globe blogger James Pindell posted to the paper's Web site Friday, Shaheen said she has "not ruled out" running for Senate in 2008.

Keeping her options open (0.00 / 0)
At the very least, it keeps her "in the loop:" anyone considering a run will need to speak with her.

Another factor worth considering: she and Bill will be highly sought after for help in the Presidential primary, and if they sign on with a winner they may be involved in the national campaign. If she's tempted by participatory politics, it may be a question of a shot at a Senate seat versus a shot at a Cabinet or Veep slot.
