Recent criticism of Obama

by: HAP

Thu Dec 27, 2007 at 15:40:23 PM EST

On this site and elsewhere much attention has been paid to a recent New Republic piece by Sean Wilentz criticizing Barack Obama as a darling of the news media. Wilentz oddly likens current Obama supporters to those drawn to George W. Bush in the year 2000.
As Cass Sunstein notes in the current New Republic, Senator Obama is an extremely substantive person, with the intellect, drive, experience, and political skills to be an excellent president. He, like Bill Clinton, built a remarkable career from scratch based on his unique talents and commitments to important issues. George W Bush was a pampered playboy who conspicuously lacks Senator Obama's most striking qualities.
If anything, the GWB analogy applies elsewhere. If Hillary Clinton were not married to Bill Clinton, she would be a successful and admirable person. I doubt that she would be a leading presidential contender.

A Mere Smear by Cass Sunstein in today's The New Republic.
Barack Obama is nothing like George W. Bush and to even intimate that his supporters are akin to those who got duped TWICE by GWB is political heresy. Barack Obama is a man of substance, ideas, experience, and accomplishment and does not deserve to be belittled so.

With that said, as to Hillary's "experience"... I was watching CNN last night (while writing postcards) and they showed video of her and Bill and Chelsea on the stump.  Talk about revisionist history, Bill and Hillary took a stroll down memory lane and waxed poetic about all the influence and foreign policy experience Hillary had as first lady.

In The Resume Factor: Those 8 Years as First LadyPatrick Healey reveals that during those 8 years, Hillary never had security clearance. Last night on AC360 (I know, I know, I know...) David Gergen, former Clinton adviser, said that he was surprised to learn that she never had security clearance as he always assumed that she had.

Friends of Mrs. Clinton say that she acted as adviser, analyst, devil's advocate, problem-solver and gut check for her husband, and that she has an intuitive sense of how brutal the job can be.

Hmm... Intuition is just what Sean Wilentz is criticizing Obama and his supporters for trusting.
Clinton could put questions to her experience to rest by declassifying her communications from her years in the White House.  If she's running on her experience as First Lady and special counsel to the President, seems she'd want us to see that there was real substance there.

Experience, leadership, and change...
Barack Obama has the experience of working with people, communities, and legislative bodies; he has demonstrated leadership in those venues; and has used both to affect change.  I have no reason to think he's going to change his stripes now.
