Pushy Bill O'Reilly and Me at Obama Rally in NH

by: jhutson

Sat Jan 05, 2008 at 18:52:32 PM EST

(Falafel. - promoted by Dean Barker)

This is my personal perspective on a breaking story about Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly manhandling a campaign worker at a rally for Senator Barack Obama in Nashua, New Hampshire today. (Hat tip to icebergslim.)

Over 200 individuals applied for media passes to cover the rally for Senator Obama today. Among them were Bill O'Reilly and me, a photo blogger covering the event in my personal diaries on Daily Kos and BlueHampshire. (Hat tip to the Obama campaign for graciously offering access to bloggers as well as blowhards.)

The press pass came with a few reasonable conditions. Media presets were to be from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. This means that camera equipment had to be set up before 9:00 a.m. in order to allow the Secret Service to sweep for bombs. All media representatives were required to vacate the gymnasium until the doors opened at 10:00 a.m. I showed up at 8:15 a.m., set up my tripod, and enjoyed a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee provided by the campaign. O'Reilly blew off the preset, then marched into the rally midway, after other broadcast crews and still photographers had already established their camera positions.

The Associated Press has detailed how O'Reilly made a late entrance to the rally, then after Obama finished his address, brusquely laid hands on campaign staffer Marvin Nicholson in order to grab the best camera angle. According to the AP, the Secret Service had to tell O'Reilly to back off.
Obama staffer Marvin Nicholson, a personal aide always at Obama's side during rope line handshakes, said O'Reilly yelled at him to get out of the way of his cameraman's shot. Nicholson said O'Reilly came around the waist-high barricade separating Obama from well-wishers.

"Then he grabbed me with both of his arms and tried to push me out of the way," Nicholson said after the campaign agreed to make him available to reporters.

O'Reilly, interviewed afterward by phone on Fox News, said he tried "to gently remove" Nicholson because he was standing in front of Fox's camera.

"We're sorry we had to have that little confrontation, but no one on this earth is going to block a shot on "The O'Reilly Factor." It is not going to happen," O'Reilly said.

The scene was hard to miss. O'Reilly is about 6-feet-5-inches tall. Nicholson is 6-feet-8-inches tall.

"I told him, 'Sir, I would appreciate it if you wouldn't shove me anymore.' He called me 'low class.' He was pretty upset," Nicholson said.

Secret Service agents assigned to protect Obama ordered O'Reilly back behind the barricade. At that point Obama approached him and extended his hand.

Earlier, the AP reports, O'Reilly had shown up at a campaign event for Senator Hillary Clinton, who had acknowledged him.

Before O'Reilly allegedly engaged in the shoving match -- which I did not witness -- he alternated between staring daggers at Senator Obama and turning his back on the podium and jabbering animatedly with his camera crew. This caught my attention, so I took a series of photos, which are included in this online slideshow of the event.

As the photos make clear, almost everyone in the room was having a great time. Except Bill O'Reilly, who looked like he was sucking lemons.

What was Billo thinking? (0.00 / 0)
My camera caught his expressions, but I don't pretend to know what he was thinking.

I was hanging around afterwards (4.00 / 1)
watching Marvin talk to the press about this.

He seemed like a giant teddy bear, but one who would certainly take most anyone I know if it came to blows.

He told the press that he did not shove BillO back, and I was very glad that he showed class in dealing with this pompous crank.

I should add (0.00 / 0)
he spoke very respectfully of BillO, referring to him as "Mr. O'Reilly" and leaving me confused as to whether or not he was talking about the same person I had in mind.

Marvin is the man.  He was my hero before this... Now he is a god.

Marvin IS the man. (4.00 / 1)
Marvin Nicholson was Kerry's "Body Man" in 2004. He was featured along with some other staffer from Clark, Dean, et al.

Marvin is a riot. I got to meet him at the Labor Day parade in Milford.
I was very excited to see that Barack had the best in the business.

P.S. Being new to presidential politics, I watched this as self assigned homework.

On Sundance:
BLOG WARS

In 2004, political bloggers came of age. They propelled Howard Dean from fringe candidate to front-runner. They took on Dan Rather and won. And they charted the course for the "swiftboating" of John Kerry. As the 2006 mid-term elections approached, bloggers were preparing for battle again. Filmmakers James Rogan and Phil Craig's sharp documentary examines how online democratic activism is shaping important elections by focusing on the decisive Connecticut senate race and Ned Lamont's challenge to incumbent Joe Lieberman.

"OBAMA PORTRAIT MUSIC VIDEO" on Youtube - Don't Miss It! (0.00 / 0)
For those of you who still have not heard:

There is a WONDERFUL and INSPIRING music video on Youtube.com entitled "Obama Portrait Music Video by Bjarne O."
You can use the free downloaded high-quality stereo version from the composer's website in DVD form to show at house parties. Even people who knew nothing at all about Obama have been moved: either a thrilling introduction, or further inspiration for those of us who already know and fight for Obama.
The music soundtrack, which incorporates excerpts from the famous 2004 speech, can also be downloaded separately in high-quality.

It is an uplifting and informative campaign tool - so please, SPREAD THE WORD!

Not At All Spamming (0.00 / 0)
If you could read all the emails I have received from people, also fellow Obama supporters, who express their gratitude for being informed about this video that they plan to use at fundraisers, etc. - if you read the overwhelmingly positive responses on the Youtube site from those who have viewed it - perhaps your opinion would be different.
But you are of course respectfully welcome to your opinion.
