New Hampshire's Gary Hirshberg Just Wrote The Book On Making Money AND Saving The World

by: jamesboyce

Sat Feb 23, 2008 at 12:32:54 PM EST

The name Gary Hirshberg will ring many a bell with Blue Hampshire readers as he has been a fixture in the this state for years, a strong progressive Democrat who has helped many, many great candidates and causes here. Well, now theStonyfield Farm CE-Yo, and all around good guy has just written a great book that takes head on, and shreds completely, perhaps the single biggest myth about the environment and business - the falsehood that being good to the earth is going to be bad to the bottom line.
jamesboyce :: New Hampshire's Gary Hirshberg Just Wrote The Book On Making Money AND Saving The World
Gary's book, Stirring It Up: How To Make Money And Save The World will warm the hearts not only of the dedicated environmentalist but also of the most bean-counting-obsessed Chief Financial Officer as well.

In telling the story of the rise of Stonyfield Farms and especially of their yogurt, Gary relates the trials and tribulations that anyone who has ever started a business can relate to, setbacks, frustrations, victories and failures. Of course, as I have only started marketing and advertising groups, the parallels in our backgrounds only went so far - while I certainly have attended and helped clients at my share of tastings and sampling events, a Stonyfield staple, I have never had to leave to go milk a cow.

Actually, to be completely honest, I have never milked a cow - or even seen a cow milked.

But Gary has seen this, and much much more. In fact, as Gary relates the stories of companies that not only make great products but make them in environmentally sound ways and practices and actually make more money because they use these methods, it gives you more hope for our future.

The business of American business is business as the old saying goes and business has to understand and relate to the power and possibility of going green. Like so many, I try and buy green products but as Wood Turner at Climate Counts, a project started by Gary Hirshberg, has been patiently educating me, the positive impact of a single green product can, and often sadly is, far outweighed by the negative impact of the company making the product.

Gary's illustrations, however, show us how powerful and green some companies have become.

He relates how companies like Timberland, Zipcars, Patagonia and Clif Bar have made their companies powerful and successful while making them green. These stories are fascinating but the story that absolutely surprised and astounded me - and should make everyone read this book and send it to all of their Republican business freinds, one word:

Wal-Mart.

That's right, here in Gary Hirshberg's book about saving the world is the fascinating story of what Lee Scott is doing at Wal-Mart.

Now, for those of you that aren't aware, Wal-Mart is the most obsessively focused bottom line company I have ever heard and read about - which might also explain why it's the world's largest company as well, and what is Wal-Mart doing?

Well, sure Wal-mart is preserving one acre of wildlife habitat for every acre it develops, and that is all well and good, but what they are really doing is saving hundreds of millions of dollars but going green.

Doubling the efficiency of their trucks? $300 million a year.

Changing to better, more energy-efficient lightbulbs in their stores? $7 million right there.

And Gary goes on to tell more truly amazing things that the most capitalistic store in the world is doing, organic clothes? They're flying off the shelves there.

So here's what I suggest. Buy the book for yourself. Read it, enjoy it, and learn.

And then, in the spirit of the book and re-use, give it to the most successful business person you know, trust me, they'll thank you for it.

Ironically, you are recommending that your readers purchase this book from the bookstore with the worst carbon footprint on earth.

Gary did an event at Gibson's in Concord and encouraged people to buy locally, from bookstores and other businesses. He pointed out that Amazon has a score of zero from everyone who tracks what public companies are doing to become greener.

Why don't you change the link to Toadstool? They have a shoppable website, for people who want to look into the book and possibly purchase it online.

Great diary otherwise.

in know what you mean, but it is a good book (0.00 / 0)
and Gary is a strong progressive voice in NH, so why not?

Doing good and doing well (0.00 / 0)
are not mutually exclusive. Gary has always made a great case for it through his actions and words. Once Tom Vilsac dropped out, Gary and Meg gave early money to both Edwards and Obama, a smart move. Edwards had the best plans for everything including cutting carbon emissions, but it was not to be. They became vocal and financial supporters of Obama, including doing visibility in their Concord Ward for the Primary election. It became abundantly clear that Barack can best  help move their green agenda forward. To say that Gary understands our culture, and profits from it, is not an understatement.

I have to confess I used Amazon because Stonyfield has Amazon up as the place to buy the book, I will look into that :)

As regards this post, I just know how many folks in New Hampshire's great progressive community online know and like Gary and that Gary is passionate about Democrats in New Hampshire so I just finished the book and thought I'd share a review of it - and yes, he does talk a lot about New Hampshire!

not so, actually (0.00 / 0)
If you go to the Stonyfield site, they simply have links to Borders, B&N, Amazon, and Booksense (which is the American Booksellers Association website for independent bookstore commerce). Stonyfield is not recommending Amazon. It would be weird if they did, after what Gary said. They are just giving people the range of choices online.

I just need to know two things: (0.00 / 0)
#1: Does he discuss domestically-produced green energy?

#2: Does he talk about how awesome New Hampshire is?

If so, I'll need to read it.  Us Derryfielders need to stick together.

Also in Newsweek this week (4.00 / 1)
The one with Michelle Obama on the cover.

Perhaps timed for the book release but an example that when trying to make a change it helps to have the power of business behind you.

That day in 1981, I realized that only the power of enlightened business could save the world-that until commerce is harnessed for the benefit of the planet, the planet doesn't stand a chance.

run against Senator Gregg in 2010, Mr. Hirshberg.

It would be really fitting to have Gregg replaced by a successful businessman who has never sacrificed the environment in the process.  It's kind of the rejection of the de-regulated world business model Gregg personifies.

But until then? (0.00 / 0)
I wonder if Obama might have something in mind for Gary.

I just hope I never see a Hirshberg-Marchand primary. (0.00 / 0)
That's the kind of tough decision we all want.

not tough at all (0.00 / 0)
Had the pleasure of working with Marchand on a couple of occasions with the campaign Doug, he is a great guy who is extremely dedicated to serving the community. Unique style of campaigning too. Dedicated to getting our generation to the polls and involved too. On primary day I was down at the Merrimack Restaruant, with some students from FP, I knew he was outside (taking a pic of Steve Spratts dog that had a BR lawn sign on it, normally weird, but it was a huge Great Dane) asked the Mayor to come in and speak with students, he jumped at the opportunity and just dove in and really connected with the students.

Plus he's from manchvegas!

Never met Hirshberg, only have heard good things though, but Marchand is part of the future of the Party.

after he dropped out of contention (for now) Gary endorsed Marchand

I'm completely with you on Marchand. I hope they don't run against each other--I'd like to see them both get more involved. (0.00 / 0)
But Hirshberg is good too, and a fellow Derryfielder.

I imagine they both would make excellent Senators (or Governors, for that matter), which is why I hope they don't go head-to-head.

Then again, I haven't seen a Hirshberg platform, obviously, and I'm a fan of Marchand's.
