Snapshot: Keene, Education Funding Forum

by: Mike Hoefer

Tue Apr 01, 2008 at 20:51:52 PM EDT

Members of the General Court representing Keene, hosted by The Keene City Democrats, address a live and television audience Sunday night. After taking some cheap shots at Senator Kelly regarding her work on defining adequacy and it's cost, fellow dems quickly turned the forum into a pro-income tax lecture.

A remarkable event (0.00 / 0)
It will be on Channel 8, the local public access channel.

It's very easy to lose perspective living in Keene. The state reps (an entirely Democratic delegation) ALL favor an income tax.

Kelly represents communities beyond Keene where there is less  consensus on such matters.

One of the interesting points of the evening: in response to a question, the representatives said, unanimously, that they believe the constitutional amendment will fail in the House. The question was about its prospects, not their own positions.

I hope somebody in Concord has a Plan B and a Plan C. It isn't really practical for Governor Lynch to run against the Democratically controlled House...

Rep. Weed (0.00 / 0)
Rep and Poli-Sci Prof Chuck Weed is a true citizen legislator, as are the others I suspect. He has attended every NH Citizen's Trade Commission meeting, including the most interesting meeting yesterday. An hour and a half of testimony on Water rights under NAFTA and the WTO, by national chairperson of the Council of Canadians, Maude Barlow. If allowed I will post Minutes.

6 days till election day
Have you knocked on doors today? Have you made calls ? Have you talked to your neighbors ?

It was a good event overall (0.00 / 0)
and our own Kathy O'Donnell moderated the event, a challenging task with the personalities on stage.

I guess on some levels I'm sick of hearing the same old from the same old (to your point perhaps a Keene phenom).  I know we are the 5th wealthiest state, I know we are an aging state, etc. etc., but if the county delegation can not present an organized view/approach, and least be realistic about the amount of progress that can be made in 1.5 sessions, how will they effect change in Concord?

I will hope/expect for additional boldness in all Democrats, particularly at the leadership level, when we are able to hold our majorities this fall.
