What Should Governor Lynch Tell Obama?

by: Jennifer Daler

Wed Nov 26, 2008 at 13:28:43 PM EST

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

President-elect Obama is to meet with the nation's governors next week to discuss the severe economic crisis facing the states.

Many economists think that aid to state and local governments should be tops on the agenda for any new stimulus spending, as they have less borrowing authority than the federal government during an economic downturn. That means that states are slashing budgets as the slowdown causes tax revenues fall.

Already the Governor has cut 25.4 million dollars from the Health and Human Services budget. From the news reports, it was unclear to me  whether this number takes the federal matching monies into account. Whatever money the state cuts will also be cut in terms of federal grants coming in to the state.

I'm not sure whether Governor Lynch is attending, but assuming he is, what should he tell the President-elect? What should he request for our state?

H/t to Susan G at Daily Kos.

Many Things (4.00 / 2)
But while much is needed, I would recommend focusing on:
1.  Money for infrastructure, e.g., as repairs to bridges, culverts, and dams, construction of commuter rail, expansion of broadband in the north country. All this would create jobs and pay dividends in the long run.
2.  Reform of No Child Left Behind and more funding for special ed.  Will help the budget and also stop punishing the public school system
3.  Funding for alternative energy; again, job creation and long term dividends
4.  Expand health care coverage and fix the health care system. Both a moral and an economic issue.
That's 2009; other priorities may have to wait until 2010.

Build the capital corridor rail line, invest in alternative energy. (0.00 / 0)
And hey, we have some alternative energy companies in New Hampshire, wink wink nudge nudge.

Stop Homeland Security from doling out (4.00 / 1)
matching grants to promote the munitions and electronic surveillance industries.

Electronic gadgets aren't just unreliable; they're a waste of energy.

The recent 3% reduction in electricity consumption should be considered just a start; not a rationale for plug-in cars to bring consumption back up around the clock.  Increasing consumption around the clock is, btw, what the EPA relaxation of pollution limits for coal plants is designed to facilitate.

New Hampshire is one of the states that has refused repeatedly to implement REAL ID on civil liberties / libertarian principles. Governor Lynch should ask Obama to re-direct the state security apparatus in general, so that maybe we will be able to board planes after all.
