Remembrances of Gregg Past

by: Dean Barker

Sun Feb 01, 2009 at 07:52:03 AM EST

The Boston Herald, of all places, makes a good catch. Judd back in 2000, with a Governor Shaheen in charge:
"In generic terms only, I don't think you'll see any member of the Senate taking a position unless they come from a state with a Republican governor because it would cost us that seat and thus the majority," Gregg said.

..."With a 51/49 split in the Senate, there's no way that the majority party in the Senate is going to allow anyone to give up their seat if it's going to be filled by someone from the other party," Gregg said.

Important distinctions, however:

* that was said right after Republicans gained the presidency after eight years. No doubt he was eager for the R's to be in the driver's seat.

* 51-49 is a completely different banana than the magic "60," which we all know is something of a mirage when you look more closely at it.

Adding: as usual, elwood unearths the takeaway from this quote.  It would have been a no-brainer for another Democratic governor, even in a state more Republican than it is today, to fill Gregg's seat with a Democrat.

The telling point here (4.00 / 2)
Is that Judd Gregg considered it an absolute guarantee that a Democratic Governor would name a Democratic replacement.

There was no suggestion that the Republicans could somehow negotiate with or pressure a Governor to do otherwise.

There was no suggestion that the elected Governor should not name someone from his or her own party.

Governor Lynch: he thinks you're a patsy.

Amen (4.00 / 1)
I have yet to hear why Gregg is "uniquely qualified." So this whole charade MUST be about picking a competent SecComm that will realign the Senate.

The deal is Judd, your seat for a legacy.

Put it on Gregg to flinch in this game of chicken.

If there ever was a time for Lynch to drop 10 points, this is it. This is the time for a command decision, one that defines a leader. For Lynch to not wield the mandate the voters of NH have handed to him is, in my mind, "silly."

The political landscape that lifted Gregg in 2004 is gone. Talk of keeping faith with the intent of the voters of 2004 is "silly."

Again, your seat for a legacy, Judd. It is your call!

Imo, the best appointment for this specific situation: John Hutson.

Pat Oliphant predicts the Gregg arrival (4.00 / 1)
in the Obama economics team.

Mebbe more like Boehner (4.00 / 1)
I dig the sentiment, though.
