SD-3: Is Bush League Bradley Really Going for It?

by: Dean Barker

Wed Feb 25, 2009 at 21:01:53 PM EST

Ray Buckley sends out a release on the state senate special election that manages to be funny and cryptic at the same time:
"We welcome both Jeb Bradley and Joe Kenney into the race for State Senate. In November, the voters of District 3 overwhelmingly elected their Democratic opponents, and I am convinced they will do the same this time as well.

"We are also very excited that Bud Martin, our nominee for state senate in 2008, has decided to run again for the seat. Unlike his opponents, Bud has a record of fighting for the families of the Lakes Region.

"Bud outperformed Bradley and Kenney in the last election in District 3, and I am confident that he will come out on top when all the votes are counted later this Spring."

Funny, because Bud Martin really did outperform the much higher profile Jeb and Joe, and that's just a really good point that makes me smile.

And cryptic, because, while I've seen these names tossed around, I haven't seen anything definitive about a run from either.

I think it goes without saying that an entry by Bush League Bradley would be pretty amazing.  A Hamster offline reminded me that US Senator Gordon Humphrey, having promised to stay for only two terms, decided not to run for a third and instead made a successful bid for state senate.

But Jeb, who lost not once but twice for the US House, to then take a step down and give this a shot seems very different and, well, kinda sad.

However, it would immediately make this race higher-profile than it is right now, which I would actually welcome, as it would a) give us a chance to promote a great candidate, Bud Martin, to a wider audience, and b) give us yet another opportunity to defeat a man who considered this ad to be acceptable campaigning.

A few things... (0.00 / 0)
1. I think that Bradley in the race would be great, especially since I think he would be using it as a stepping stone to make another congressional run. It would be nice to end his career in this race.

2. Martin obviously is in a great position and his supporters(myself included) will certainly be ready to mobilize again.

3. Regardless of what Republican enters the race, this is a great chance for a pick-up. Plus, I like Buckley calling out potential candidates by name.

4. This will be a chance to show that we simply are more motivated as a party. A special election is all about mobilizing/motivating voters.

Every election is a voter action and I continue to object (0.00 / 0)
to targeting candidates for defeat or a beating.
Jeb Bradley is, from all appearances, a valued foot soldier in a party that prizes obedience above all else.  That's probably not what the citizens in the third district are looking for in a state senator.

the third district (4.00 / 1)
is awkwardly gerrymandered together.

Jeb Bradley will play very well in the boros: Tuftonboro, Moultonborough, Wolfeboro.

Southern Carroll County is changing, but it's still leaning GOP.

A little fact check (0.00 / 0)
Not that I don't appreciate BH's every present snark, else I doubt I'd troll my way around here reading posts as much as I do, but a little truth in advertising might be in order regarding your suggestion that Bradley thought the ad you linked to was "acceptable campaigning."

Given that it was planned, designed, and payed for by the NRCC, it would seem unlikely that Jeb had anything to do with it...other than perhaps failing to demand it be taken down.  Something I've never seen CSP do by the way, no matter how absurd the ad, like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... where the DCCC conveniently ignores the fact that she was a Member of Congress during the entirety of the economic downturn they were offloading onto Bradley.

Yes. (4.00 / 2)
A lie about giving away houses to sex offenders is the same thing as pinning the deregulatory root causes behind the economic collapse to Bush and his enablers.

And if Jeb was unable or unwilling to stand up to the big bad NRCC, to me that means he was just fine with the ad.  If there is evidence to the contrary, I will gladly add an update.

Even Charlie Bass publicly denounced the NRCC robocalls run in his district in 2006.

I'd agree that there's a difference, and would have liked to see Jeb denounce the ad, though we may disagree as the to factual basis for them...they were still uncalled for.

By the way, if I remember aright, you weren't so charitable to Charlie back in 2006...he did denounce the NRCC...and they told him to shove it so far as I know. But if I remember correctly you alleged some sort of conspiracy.

You know, it's a funny thing (0.00 / 0)
But it turns out that calling yourself "Troll" isn't actually funny.

No. (4.00 / 1)
But if I remember correctly you alleged some sort of conspiracy.

You do not remember correctly.  I called him out for his weak tea objection, followed by his throwing up his hands at the matter.

It stood in pretty stark contrast, I remember, to his campaign theme of being indypendent from the GOP.

More on the race... (0.00 / 0)
I hate to cite the UL, but they did a decent write-up of CD-3, especially concerning the ramifications on the Republican side.

Also, I feel that the ad attacking CSP was not even in the same ballpark as the Bradley one, considering it was meant to scare voters, not inform them. And the Bradley ad cites his 2004 voting record, which is fair game.
