Granite Status: Kacavas may be next US Attorney

by: Peter Sullivan

Thu Mar 26, 2009 at 09:10:56 AM EDT

Shhh! It's being kept very quiet, but we understand veteran Manchester criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor John Kacavas is in the running to become the next U.S. attorney for New Hampshire.

Kacavas had been mentioned five years ago as a contender for New Hampshire attorney general before Gov. John Lynch kept on Republican Craig Benson appointee Kelly Ayotte, whom he now wants to re-appoint again..

If this is true, I say well done, Mr. President. John is one of the true gentlemen in both New Hampshire politics and the legal profession. His resume includes time as an assistant attorney general, state legislator, school board member, and congressional aide. He would bring the perfect blend of experience and temperament to this position.

Whomever is chosen will have to deal with the following: (0.00 / 1)
Executive Council Fails to Investigate Justice Laplante's Concerns RE: Ayotte

Basic sensibility would demand that the Executive Council investigate the concerns of a federal judge who orders an investigation of Kelly Ayotte. This takes on added importance when the public does not have the opportunity to cast their vote and must rely on five individuals who supposedly are acting in their best interests. There is no justification for the Council to not have investigated these matters when a federal judge asks the U.S. Attorney's Office for an investigation. Federal Judge Joseph Laplante called for an investigation after a detailed review of information he received regarding Ayotte during his nomination hearings in the fall of 2007. The fact that the U.S. attorney is sitting on this matter raises further questions as to why the Executive Council did not conduct their own investigation.
