Cullen, Corrected.

Fergus: still here. How irresponsible of me to presume that one can be the Director of anything from two states away.

He's got some fences to mend (4.00 / 1)
Cow fences.

Good to know he's still a faithful reader of Blue Hampshire.

Comments on Dairy (4.00 / 2)

Not diary, but dairy - hey, go easy! I live in the puckerbrush...

What is so incredibly myopic about what Cullen has said is that the dairy industry in the Northeast is under very heavy, economic pressure. It is manipulated by special interests that are the equivalent to any special interset industry in the country.

In New Hampshire alone, our small but highly productive dairy farms are responsible for at least 750 jobs, not counting the farm owners. That's more than the five wood burning generation plants. Annual economic benefit from our dairy farms represents easily about $150 millions, and were we pressed for a safe, wholesome food supply, New Hampshire farms could provide annually 25+ gallons of fresh milk for every person in the state. Of course we would have to forgo ice cream and yoghurt.

We only have about 130+ dairy farms left in the state (about 1/10th of Vermont's census, but only about fifty less farms than Connecticut); however, these farms account for over 100,000 open woods and grasslands, necessary ingredients for our state's vital tourist and recreation industry.

Fergus' rather myopic, disingenuous opinion about what to do with dairy cattle, his attitude towards agriculture is symptomatic of many in NH who just take agriculture for granted, think milk comes in cartons from contented cows in California, and make no real contribution to our economy or the state's well being.

Losing Fergus is really Connecticut's loss, too. New England and the Northeast cannot afford to lose their dairy farms.

The milk we drink at my (0.00 / 0)
house does come from contented cows. And I get to visit them, too, because I belong to one of the oldest CSA's in the country.

Fergus should ruminate on his awful suggestion, I think. Maybe he'll see how full of dung it is. Heh, not really, at least dung has some use as compost.

correction! (0.00 / 0)
That's 100,000 acres!!!! Great boon to our rooms and meals tax, but the little towns don't get their real! share of those revenues..... certainly the farmers don't.
