State Republicans Continue to Hurt

by: Laura Clawson

Thu May 17, 2007 at 19:17:07 PM EDT

A note to potential donors to the state Republican party: Remember, part of your money will be going to the state Democratic party due to the phonejamming settlement.

Now consider whether to go to their fundraiser:

State Republican Party chairman Fergus Cullen is pitching the Republican State Committee annual dinner on June 6, the day after the Presidential debate at Saint Anselm College.

In a recent memo to "Friends of the Party," he wrote that former Democratic chairman Kathy Sullivan said one reason her party did so well last November was because the GOP was "under-funded and under-staffed."

"She was right," Cullen wrote, "and that advantage continues." The Democrats have nine staff positions, "and we have two."

That's got to be a tough one.  On the one hand, the NH GOP desperately needs that money.  On the other hand, well, part of it will probably go to the NHDP.  My heart aches for them.

You beat me by 30 seconds. (0.00 / 0)
As penance for stepping on this by accident, I offer the following diary-related factoid from the previous Granite Status:

The Republican State Committee is slowly building its finances under new chair Fergus Cullen, but has a long way to go to catch the Democrats.

April monthly filings at the Federal Election Commission showed the state GOP with $65,283 on hand and no debts. The Democrats' monthly report showed $141,252 on hand, with debts and obligations totalling $29,657.

The Democrats showed total receipts of $158,766 in March alone, including contributions totaling $81,079 and a separate receipt of $65,000 from Clinton's campaign for the purchase of its voter file. The Edwards, Dodd and Obama campaigns have also purchased the precious list.

No worries about the 30 seconds. (0.00 / 0)
I always find that amusing.  One time at Daily Kos mcjoan and I posted on the exact same quote maybe a minute apart.

Thanks for the info. *rubs hands together gleefully*

The voter files are such a scam.

Isn't the adjective (0.00 / 0)
"precious" used to describe the list oddly fitting here?

I picture Gollum salivating over a stack of papers with names and numbers in a mountain cave, wheezing out, "my precious"...

its digital info (0.00 / 0)
Its an online database thats updated and maintained by NHDP Staff, and local activists.

It takes a great deal of work to get a voter file as good as the one the NHDP is maintaining.  The free ones provided by the towns are notoriously wrong... What campaign wants to deal with that?  They want the best list, they should compensate the local Democratic Party for maintaining it.

Now, is it $65,000 valuable?  I'm not so sure...

[ Parent ]
They charge more (0.00 / 0)
than other states.  I believe I've heard they even charge more than other early primary states.

[ Parent ]
Not so (4.00 / 2)
Scam? I don't think so. There is a ton of work that goes into building voter files, and a lot of data built into them, such as vote history, phone matches, etc.  Howard Dean has made excellent voter files a major priority as part of the 50 state strategy (the DNC hired the person who is the NH voter file consultant to be the DNC voter file guru).  I know that there are people associated with the Hodes '06 campaign who complain that he should have been given the file for free, but it costs a lot to build and maintain the files (not to mention that an outright gift of the file would bust the FEC donation cap and result in significant fines assessed against both the candidate and the party).  If the party files were a "scam", as you put it, the candidates could either go buy their own lists from all the towns, or buy a voter file from one of the commercial vendors, rather than buy the party files. They don't spend the kind of money they spend on party voter files if the files did not have significant value.  You should talk to people at the NHDP about the work and cost of building and maintaining voter files bvefore calling them a "scam".

I was drawing on knowledge (0.00 / 0)
of how much less it is in other states, which also have good voter files.  I think that the party should be fairly compensated for the file - I just think that "fair" involves being more in line with what it is elsewhere.

[ Parent ]
Different quality (0.00 / 0)
Why not talk to someone at the state party to get their perspective before declaring that it is a scam, instead of relying on what you've heard about other the pricing in other states?
Since New Hampshire brought its voter file in house several years ago(thanks to Jeanne Shaheen, who made this a priority for the NH party when she became governor), it has voter history going further back than other states.  The overwhelming majority of states did not bring their files in house until Terry McAuliffe made it a priority in about 2002/3, and even then many of the ones that had files didn't have good quality.  It wasn't until Howard Dean's recent 50 state strategy that all the states really got with the program.  By then, New Hampshire was already way ahead of the curve because it started much earlier ).
The party also works with candidates to make the file acessible.

[ Parent ]
This is one of the few premiums (4.00 / 1)
that having the first primary brings us. The list is worth more per name than a list from Maine or Vermont -- and there are more candidates in the race at the time.

[ Parent ]
Oh, and I should be clear: (0.00 / 0)
While I have friends who worked for or continue to work for Paul Hodes, not only are they entirely professional and discreet, but I would never say anything I have heard only from them.  If I'm making a criticism, advancing a theory, etc, sure, there's some possibility it came from someone there.  But what you can be absolutely certain of is that it came from somewhere else.  Remember, one of the facts of life as a Daily Kos contributing editor is that I hear stuff from all over.

[ Parent ]
Great! (0.00 / 0)
But don't you think it would also be helpful if you talked to someone at the state party as well before declaring something it is doing is a scam? Because you are so well known and respected as a Daily Kos editor, people take what you say seriously.

[ Parent ]
Transitive or intransitive? (4.00 / 1)
"Continue to hurt"?

Works either way.

(Grammar jokes. I crack me up.)
