Obama Fervor: I Don't Like It

by: Nicholas Gunn

Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 10:34:45 AM EST

What is the New Hampshire Primary?  Isn't New Hampshire supposed to be the place where potential candidates get the shake-down?  Why should Obama get an easy ride?

Something smells very fishy about Senator Obama's planned trip to NH this weekend.

The Concord Monitor reports on the Obama Hype:

When Sen. Barack Obama takes to the stage in Manchester on Sunday afternoon, he will look out at a sell-out crowd of more than 1,500. Audience members will have traveled from 13 different states, including South Carolina and Virginia. Of the 150 journalists covering the event, a handful will be from as far away as Japan and Denmark.

If the response to Obama's planned visit is any indication, he will enter the Granite State a political rock star. Thus far in the 2008 presidential primary process, Sunday's event is unparalleled in size and national attention. Late Wednesday, the New Hampshire Democratic Party sold out of tickets for the event, which is standing-room only.

At 11 a.m. Sunday, Obama will sign copies of his new book - The Audacity of Hope - in Portsmouth. The 750 free tickets to the signing "were gone in just a few hours," said Tom Holbrook, owner of RiverRun Bookstore, which is hosting the event (the event will take place at the Frank Jones Center to meet demand). Holbrook will have 900 copies of Obama's book on hand; Obama, Holbrook said, agreed to sign one copy for each audience member.

A visit Barack Obama is getting as much hype, if not more, than a visit from Bill Clinton.  What has he done to earn it?  As of right now, what cause has he championed for America?

The more I think about it, all the energy and attention given towards a Barack Obama candidacy seems to spring exclusively from the beltway.  Barack Obama is intriguing because he's talked about so much? but what are they talking about?  It's all hype.

If Barack Obama thinks he can come into NH and win just by staging these massive events with carefully crafted speeches, he's wrong.  I for one won't make up my mind on the man until I see him in person, and I hear him answer REAL questions by REAL people who don't host Sunday talk shows.

Barack is in the honeymoon period.  He can't expect to be treated like royalty for very long, and I'll have a hard time forming an opinion on him until the honeymoon is over.

I have yet to take a stand on Obama, or any of the current candidates for that matter.

My favorite was Feingold, with Warner as a second favorite, if that gives you an idea of where i'm coming from.

I Like It (4.00 / 1)
What's not to like? Isn't it exciting to have a Democrat with great charisma that the media loves? I'm sure he wil face proper scrutiny in time.

In my opinion, Obama is the only Democrat who can beat John McCain. We need to embrace him.

I simply wanted... (0.00 / 0)
...to plant myself firmly anti-hype.

Like I said, I am as of yet undecided.

Perfectly Fair (0.00 / 0)
I wouldn't expect anything less.

Winning is my #1 priority in 2008, and I just don't think anyone else can beat McCain. Hillary is a sure loss to McCain or Guiliani and probably even Romney.

I am very excited about an Obama candidacy. Politicians like him don't come along very often.

McCain may not win the Primary... (0.00 / 0)
We may need an entirely different candidate depending on what's going on with the Republicans.

Veep bait (0.00 / 0)
I don't think Sununu will fall for it.

Interesting how McCain finds two plausible ticketmates who happen to come from New Hampshire and South Carolina, isn't it?

Sununu needs to worry about his own Senate race. Ticking off half the GOP activists in January isn't a good move. (Would he pull a Lieberman and run for both offices if McCain really did choose him?)

Re: McCain (0.00 / 0)
I believe, though I may be wrong, that Sununu will be doing everything he can to ensure that Mr. Straight Talk wins the NH primary.

Part (but only part) of why I think so rests here.

Senator Clinton can win (0.00 / 0)
just as any of the other top dems can win. We are doing the work of the GOP when we echo the "She can't win" meme. Also Interested that folks tend to call her "Hillary" vs "Clinton" using her first name rather than Last as we all tend to with the other candidates. Perhaps it is another subtle form of disrespect?

I remember hearing him (4.00 / 1)
oh so long ago at the Dem convention (on TV that is). I was certainly awe struck by his speech, I had my wife come watch and remarked we'd will see him running for president some day. Next to Dean's "I want to know..." speech it was the most powerful oratory I have ever heard.

The only thing I worry about would be the privatization of the primary. To me the primary is about the small towns and events... It's not unheard of that anyone of us could have a candidate in their home. Only issue is my living room won't hold 1500!

And moving forward for Obama is how will he campaign if each event is so large... I guess it is the right problem to have but it may make things difficult.

I think the more hype we are making for Dem Candidate at this point the better.

I'm not giving my word.. (4.00 / 2)
until it's clear what Al Gore will do, which could last up to another full year, as Kos suggests.

I'm kinda pissy right now anyways though because I actually thought this Sunday event was a "Victory Party" as it said on the invitation, and now myself and other new Democratic caucus members can't go because the event sold out so fast to the media, et al.  Next time, I wish the NHDP would provide a better event description when they intend to pimp their celebrity friends under the guise of our electoral victory.
Apparently the recently elected NH Dems being honored by the victory celebration are Lynch, Hodes and Shea-Porter.

It's time we steer by the stars, and not the lights of every passing ship

You might just have a better view watching on C-Span than if you were there in the mass of humanity with 1,500 other people. You save $25 too.

$25... (0.00 / 0)
Could this be the first political campaign event to involve scalpers?

[ Parent ]
Priceless (0.00 / 0)
What is it worth for someone to be physically present at what is likely to be a significant event in the history of the New Hampshire Primary?

What value would you put on being there when Muskie wiped a tear (or snowflake) from his cheek in front of the Union Leader building or when Clinton gave his "old dogs dont die" speech at the union hall in Dover? or when someone questioned Biden about his misrepresentations about his background? or when Gary Hart withdrew from the Primary because of his indiscretions?

Priceless for political junkies like us!

Or to have been getting a haircut (0.00 / 0)
in Frenchie's Barber Shop when the candidate came in and said, "Hi! I'm Congressman Mo Udall, and I'm running for President!"

And the barber said, "Yes, we were just laughing about that."

Or to have been in the audience when Reagan explained "I PAID for that microphone, Mr. Green! [sic]"

[ Parent ]
On the other hand (4.00 / 2)
with 1500 people expected at the Obama event, you could just say you were there (as countless others likely will) and nobody will probably know any better!

[ Parent ]
I was in Nashua (4.00 / 3)
hoping to hear John Anderson and happened to hear ronnie raygun tell the world that he was paying for that microphone. That line probably won him the NH primary.

...the Doo Dah Man once told me you've got to play your hand. Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay 'em down.

[ Parent ]
I saw him earlier that campaign (4.00 / 2)
in Hanover.

A student asked him contemptuously how Bonzo, his costar in "Bedtime for Bozo," was doing.

Reagan gave a straight answer. The monkey had been a handful when they made the movie; he understood that Bonzo had died a couple of years earlier.

Reagan knew he was being mocked, and he knew how to handle it.

I figured he would win.

Obama Follow Up (4.00 / 1)
Did anyone else who went to the Obama event on Sunday before last get a postcard from him recently?

Today I got an autographed postcard with a cool picture of him on the front (in a crowd Obama is similing while looking down at a short older red headed woman who is looking up at him with a decided look of excitement on her face) and there is a message on the back. In the message, he reiterates the gist of what he said at the event, and he encourages us to visit his website to join his campaign.

I am really impressed that Obama follow up so quickly in the Christmas season no less.  It is also a little different that he used an autographed picture postcard as a vehicle to express his thanks and to keep in touch rather than a formal letter.  It makes him seem different, less stuffy, and new.

Is there any doubt that Senator Obama is running?

None whatsoever (0.00 / 0)
Incidentally, i forget if you mentioned Warner's Xmas card -- but Hotline just mentioned that card as an indication he is still in.

Rock-star status doesn't detract from ability to answer tough questions (4.00 / 1)
I certainly don't think Obama believes he can win the primary by staging massive events, but considering that last Sunday's visit was his first to New Hampshire the crowd was unsuprising. He is, after all, a rock star. Don't overlook the fact that he chartered a plane just so he could stay and talk to people afterward. He doesn't shy away from questions from real people, and if he decides to run for president, I'm sure you'll see him in a living room near you (although I can't promise there won't be a crowd)
