Northwood Town Hall with Carol

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

This is going to be my personal observations and thoughts about the town hall this morning.  I am sure I will miss something, and will undoubtedly have more to add later, but I wanted to get this out.

My last town hall meeting with a congressperson in my town was some years ago with Jeb Bradley.  That's when he explained to us that he had to toe the party line with the Republican leadership or we wouldn't get the goodies.  It was pathetic and sad, for him, and more for us, his constituents.

Today we got to hear our magnificent congresswoman.  I use that word because that is how I perceived her.  She was honest, she was forthright, she was deeply knowledgeable about her job, its pressure and contradictions, but sure she was representing her constituents to the best of her ability, whether they agreed with her or not.  It was a much friendlier crowd than I had expected, and I almost thought Carol was a little disappointed!  There were some questions from the other side, most of which made very little sense to me, either because they were very vague or because they were based on misinformation.  There were questions from people who thanked Carol for the healthcare vote but were concerned about the costs, to which Carol responded that if she had gotten to write the bill she would have gone with Medicare for all or the public option, but that there was no way that could have been voted in, and changes had to be made.  She reminded us several times that this is just the beginning, and a work in progress, but absolutely necessary for the good of the country.

There was a woman who apparently has gotten to ask a question at 3 town halls so far, who is a stay at home mom who home schools, studies the Constitution and the founding fathers, and whose grocery bill has gotten too high.  She is convinced the founders would not approve of Carol, and it's the Democrats' fault that food is too expensive.  Or something like that, I had some trouble following the logic, no, wait, there was no logic, these people really confuse me.  Carol attempted to respond, but she was having none of it.  She disagreed with Carol and...well, I guess she wanted Carol to agree with her, and I didn't even get the sense that that would have made her happy.

For all those who insist that Carol did not read the bill, I think her grasp of the provisions today proved them wrong.  She knows that bill inside and out.

She was also asked about the energy bill, Iraq and Afghanistan, credit cards and other financial reforms, and I am sure I have forgotten a few other things.

I am so proud to be a supporter, and so glad to have her as my congresswoman.  I am truly represented for the first time in my 67 years.  Now for goodness sake let's make sure we re-elect her!

My 4rth town hall this recess (0.00 / 0)
and this was the most impressive in terms of CSP supporters turning out.  Even the two or three detractors had the wind taken out of their sails.  I doubt that Carol lost any votes over the health care vote - these people weren't going to vote for her anyway.

Hats off to the Northwood Dems who had a large presence here.  The tide is turning and will continue to as accurate information is presented and the reforms are implemented.

We love Carol (4.00 / 1)
Northwood has always loved Carol, well, at least a majority of us.  but I was impressed with the Strafford and Deerfield contingents, and Nottingham was there too.  Northwood, Nottingham, Deerfield and Candia share a state rep district, and we have been working together for a while as the Lamprey Dems (we share the Lamprey River).

As far as the detractors go, it would seem that it is their way or the highway.  They have to have it their way, and see no reason to compromise.  On my planet, compromise is a necessity in all parts of my life, but for them it would seem that ideology trumps getting anything done.

And most of them also seem to live on planet Reagan, where government does nothing to help them.   Apparently they fight their own fires, build their own roads, plow their way to work (no, wait, they take advantage of the rest of us paying taxes on that score, I'd bet!), and stay safe from all enemies because they own a gun or two.

Well, preaching to the choir.

I knew I had seen the discussion some years ago, but somehow my husband's obsession with all things nautical at that time made my memory go with tow.  Thanks for clearing that up.

Hampton Town Hall a Success (4.00 / 3)
About 200 in attendance, 25-30 healthcare opponents. Carol was terrific, let them ask their questions, treated even the rudest with respect. She got a standing ovation when she walked in. The opposition was more subdued than in previous town meetings in other places. Three members of the seacoast GOP women were there and did their usual shouting out but were quickly silenced by others around them. I think these events are helping Carol. She comes across as so reasonable and willing to listen, it's impressive.

My favorite comment was from a young man who said he has no insurance and doesn't want any. He said if he gets sick he will just go to the emergency room and get medical care for free. Carol informed him that that meant we would all paying for his health care, which seemed to surprise him quite a bit. Wonder where he thought the money would come from?

Bloomingpol.  I was at that town meeting too.  She really did a great job.  She really did.

It was that part where one questioner pretended to be nervous when she asked her rhetorical question.  Porter never missed a beat when she began her, what I perceived was a rehearsed attack, and Porter said, "By the way, you've gotten over your nervousness...".  That was very clever.  All this controversy this past year will make Porter a much better and more nimble candidate.

And her China renewable energy manufacturing while we debate position is stellar.

Bloomingpol, feel free to download and use our photo for your promotional use about this meeting.  Consider this posting as your copyright to do so.

I live in Northwood, too.  I'm curious who you are and would love to meet you.
